this was a ROUGH class. Had hixson for chem 261 & liked him MUCH better. Lahti was confusing in class and went SO fast. 4 tests plus final. Lowest of 4 is dropped. Class had no scale!! Be ready to put lots and lots of time into this class if you want a B or higher.

Paul Lahti is a humble genius with infinite patience for strong accents and stupid questions. He will take you under his wing during office hours and go HAM on whatever chemistry related topic that you want. He is honestly the best I've ever seen

Organic chemistry is no breeze, but Lahti is one of the greatest professors I've ever had. I got a C+ in Chem2, so I was terrified of Orgo, but I pulled an A- because I did ALL the HW and the extra credit, read the book, did many practice problems from the book and went to class. It paid off because now he knows my face. All depends on YOUR effort!

I thoroughly enjoy Lahti's lectures! He is very helpful and organized. Exams are open notes but honestly notes don't really help at all (even if you take your own from the book.) Lahti's exams test well how you can apply knowledge rather than how much you've learned from the homework/notes. One of the most fair professors I've had at umass.

Has absolutely no interest in his job and does not care at all for the students. Like all his dept. he is extremely arrogant and it is all about him and his research. Students can go to the useless unknowledgeable TAs and fail. Tragedy of UMASS.

Lahti is a really nice guy who really knows what he's talking about. Unfortunately, the material is really hard. His exams are open notes, but the questions are like reading new material, which makes it hard to study. It takes a lot of effort, but Lahti and the TAs really did their best to make it as easier.

Lahti is very nice, helpful and fair. The study guides that he posts before each exam is the key to do well in them. The material is not easy, but if you put in the work and go to his office hours it will pay off in the end. This school needs more professors like him...no question he deserves the Distinguished Teaching Award.

I heart Lahti times a lot. He is amazing. Anyone who says otherwise should be deported.

He is a great guy who explains the basics of organic chemistry very well during lecture. However, his exams are open notes and he compensates for this by making them impossible. At the end -- he'll scale your grade, he understands that not all of his students want to be chemists.

A good professor who wants everyone to do well, the problem is in the size of the class. Nearly inaccessible and his lectures tend to oversimplify, which makes his nigh impossible exams that much harder.

The class is tough. The secret to doing well is to do the required readings, OWLs, and the supplementary homeworks. Professor Lahti is a very nice guy and tries to help but he needs to be able to talk at the level of his students and give concrete examples relative to Organic Chemistry.

Professor Lahti is a really great teacher. Orgo is just a terrible class but he teaches it very clearly and his tests and quizzes are tough but open notes. He was nominated for some big time teaching award this year so hes definitely good at what he does.

Lahti is a good, funny, fun teacher teaching a horrible... HORRIBLE subject. We had hixson substitute one day and he's terrible. Lahti is well organized and encourages many questions. He's also fair. He let us retake a test b/c it was clearly too long. Don't let his kind attitude mislead you into a false sense of security. Subject/his tests is HARD

the subject matter sucks, but Lahti does his best to make it understandable. Lectures aren't mandatory but his review questions in class before the tests are nearly identical to the ones on it. Great guy, terrible class.

For what Lahti lacks in teaching ability he makes up for in availability. This is a hard course and his teaching methods don't make it any easier. He lets students use notes on exams which in the end is a detriment to learning.

His lectures do not flow as smoothly as Snyder's but he is a much nicer professor.

He is kind of goofy at times but it makes the class a bit more pleasurable than the material actually is. He does a good job at clearing up points of confusion and is a very understandable teacher. He has "bonus" prs but dont expect him to know how to operate it yet

Incredible professor who is extremely helpful and who wants all his students to do well. The course material itself is difficult, but his explanations are clear and concise. Exams are challenging but his grading scale at the end is beneficial (though more so for those who are below the average)

Very thorough and patient during lectures. Sometimes the OWL homework is superfluous, but it's good practice. Exams are a challenge but Prof. Lahti tells you exactly what you need to know and lets you use notes. He makes a very hard course engaging and enjoyable. He has office hours four days a week and responds instantly to email.

Nice guy, helpful if you seek it. Terrible lectures, really awful and incomprehensible. I would wait to take it with Snyder. not recommended.
