I don't understand these people. Zak is awesome; amazing violinist and coach.

Watch out. This guy gets vendettas against certain students and is infamous as a backstabber. If you can avoid the ASQ and their joke of a chamber music program, then do so. It's not worth having to deal with this slimey character.

Does not spend any time at all working on rhythm or intonation.

Not very good at working on precision and intonation. Does nothing to help students learn how to rehearse as a group on their own.

Zak let a student come to rehearsals as she pleased; he never confronted her about ditching and showing up unprepared with a major attitude. This made for a poor chamber experience. I could never recommend SFSU for the chamber program.

I suppose Zak is kind of a hit or miss guy. Honestly I was almost shocked to read these negative reviews. He's very laid back, and only takes you as seriously as you take your studies. He's a living textbook on the violin and chamber music, so you'll learn a ton from him and the ASQ. Excellent teacher for serious students, and a fun guy to be with.

A horrible coach who never follows through on what he says. Very passive-aggressive and indirect, so it is hard to believe anything he says.

Zak is the main reason I am leaving SF State for another music school.

Very competent chamber music teacher, and a fabulous violinist. He gives a lot of good, to the point advice, makes good use of time and works fast. Demanding and very educational, you can learn a lot with this teacher.

Don't know what this guy is doing as a teacher...doesn't care about his violin students at all and often badmouths them to each other.

Yikes! Zak is more interested in playing mind games than coaching chamber music, which is his job. In one group, he let one student come and go and she pleased, and never confronted her about her absences and lame excuses, holding up the group's progress. He has terrible taste with Baroque music. A most unprofessional, lazy teacher.
