Took this as a DEC and wasn't expecting much before the semester started. I'm an engineering major and I loved every moment of this class. Marker is very nice guy, knows the material well, never puts you to sleep, great sense of humor, and a fair grader. Certainly beat CLL 215 that I was in prior. I wish he taught every DEC class, I'll miss him.

Favorite professor of the semester. The guy is like a walking textbook, knows Russian history like the back of his hand. Taking notes is a must to do well. Fair grader. Worth getting up to take this class.

Good class and prof. There were 2 non cum. exams with 2 essays each (a choice is given), and a short paper based on a novel. Fair grading and fairly engaging lectures. The secondary text and document book are not that necessary if you take good class notes, but I'd recommend them for clarifying material.

Favorite class I took this semester. The man is a Harvard trained genius who is an expert on Russia. Read the textbook at the pace of the lectures and take good notes. Great class!

Professor Marker is extremely knowledgeable and quite simply an expert of Russian history. I had no interest in the subject prior to this class, but the lectures were very interesting and clear. Notetaking is a necessity.

Very opinionated. Has students choose their own theses. However, if those theses do not reflect his own opinions which are presented in his lectures, your grade will be affected.

Great lecturer, wonderful professor. The material is not that difficult either. If you want A: don't miss a lecture, take note of everything he say, and you will get an A with no problem. Don't bother buying the textbook, since he gives essay exams based on his lectures. Also, you have at least 2 essay choices on the exams; Exams are NOT cumulat

Prof. Marker is one of the best at SB. I took this class just for the DEC and left with some interesting knowledge of Russian history. Two of the most annoying people possible were in this class however and their outbursts during class made me question "Why, exactly, am I here at 8 am?" Exams are easy and very fair. Essay based.

If you want to know anything about Russia take a class with this professor. He is very knowledgeable and is a good lecturer. Only 3 exams throughout the semester that's it!! As long as you attend lecture and take good notes, you should do well.

he takes attendance... but im not sure what it counts for - if anything. Almost the entire grade is essay based midterms and a final. I found him to be painfully boring and unable to engage the class. He went on talking about a lot of stuff in class that just seemed irrelevant. Take an american history class for the dec

Second class with Marker and his lectures are still amazing. The class is essentially 3 essay tests in class and he is perhaps one of the best at giving a lecture at Stony Brook. Take any class you can with him.

I wish this class had more things to be graded. I would have probably got a better grade that way, but I can't complain really. His tests are very fair, if you just go to class and listen to his lectures (which are amazing). I am taking another class with him this semester, hopefully I can get an A this time.

Took it for DEC & got A. Initially I was intimidated by the -ve comments, but trust me, he is d best hist prof I've ever had. His exams were fair & easy coz they're based on his lectures. All u need to do is attend all his classes and take good notes. A tape-recorder might be helpful. He has a gr8 sense of humor. Fast grader too.

He is a great professor and I learned a lot from this class. U must attend every class, attendance is taken, and in order to do well on his exams, make sure u take good notes. Essay based exams, just know everything from lectures.

Great Professor, I enjoyed Imperial Russia more than Soviet Russia, but both were interesting. He is very informative, but exams are on lectures, so you must attend every class and be able to write A LOT. completely worth it because Russian history is so interesting.

He is a teacher that knows his information. But I had a hard time enjoying the class for several reasons; i didn't have much interest in soviet russia, the class was at 8 in the morning, it was in javits lecture in a depressing room, and he kinda has a monotonous voice. The tests are pretty hard, u have to know ur info (essays and identifications)

Marker is very thorough in his explanations. All you have to do is study and take good notes if you want to pass because the test are based mainly on the notes than the text. I read the text about two times and I could an A- on the final. He is a very fair grader. Just go to class and take notes
