Even if you don't agree with him on other things, he still is a fascinating teacher who will give you a whole new palette of directors and works to check out. Take him if you are sick of wading through underwhelming films. Plus, his insights on Cassavetes are remarkable.

Ray is by far the most intelligent, thoughtful, and motivating figure I've ever encountered in my life. He demands quite a bit from his students but all of the work he assigns is extremely relevant and instructive. And he doesn't waste a single moment of class time, making plenty of room for meaningful, heated and ultimately productive dicussion.

A very interesting and captivating teacher, only take if you're prepared for an intellectual challenge! He does come off as judgmental and biased, but is nonetheless a great learning experience. Highly recommend him even though I expect a B!

I have never had a better professor in my life. Still, his words stay close to my heart.
Film
Worst teacher in BU Film. Treats film taste as an objective subject where there is a right and wrong opinion. Ex: First day of class, asked students their favorite movie and then told them why their choice sucked. Also, no clear grading guidelines. He discourages instead of nutures young filmmakers. How many next cassavettes has he squashed?

You have to know what you're getting into with Carney. He's incredibly intelligent, whether you agree with him or not. Somedays you love him, some days you hate him. But to graduate from BU film without taking a Cassavetes class with the world's expert on the director is a waste of tuition money, regardless of the grade you might receive.

Regardless of your particular concentration within the field, to study film at BU without taking a course with Ray Carney is tantamount to committing a crime. It's really that simple.

Worst teacher I have ever encountered at BU. Avoid his classes at all costs. The only thing that wasted more time than his classes were his tedious papers.
FT
His insights on film are outdated and illogical. Teaching is just his forum to rant. Avoid at all costs. Has no clear vision for his classes except to trash that which he doesn't comprehend. A blight on BU's film school rep.

Despite his egotism I thought he was a nice guy. Pretty sure he was tripping on acid the whole time. Goes off subject a lot. Feels like he pulls grades out of his ass. Entertaining...until you get a C-

Ray was a tough, demanding, but excellent teacher. He challenged my traditional movie thinking and exposed me to a new way of looking at film. He was very available when I had questions. You may not get an A, but you'll actually learn something.

Worst. Professor. Ever. I had him TWICE. One of those intellectuals without a purpose, so bitter about his uselessness and disconnection that he takes it out on students. Subjective, arrogant, outdated. I succeeded in the film industry to spite him.
