Really disappointed that he didn't even make a single appearance in lecture. Homework is incredibly vague. The exams are not too hard because they are open book/note but labs are frequently on material that we haven't yet covered in lecture which is extremely frustrating. TAs just read lecture slides so that's basically a waste of time.

He doesn't even teach it himself! The communication between TAs is horrid. I'm constantly arguing points back because the homework is so vague. labs are consistently on material we haven't even covered in lecture. The lab TAs think we're stupid because of it. Lecture is pointless, the TA reads the slides he makes. Biggest waste of my time.

Huhns' class is quite tough. His tests and lab tests are really hard but he curves them a lot. His lectures are pointless and they don't help with the homework he assigns you. I got most of my learning through the SI leaders. I recommend you to go to SI because they will help you unlike Huhns.

The lecture teaches you very little. All learning for me was in the labs and from the TAs. Most of the course was self taught through google. It is a tough course but if you use the TAs and SI sessions you can pass it. He does seem to care about the class but teaching style is inefficient.

His knowledge level is far above this class so its hard for him to teach people new to this subject. I enjoyed this class because this was my major and was easy, he provides insight into more complex concepts for those that have already done java

Taking the class from one of his doc students (carroll) Pure garbage. Lectures are useless. Frequently blindsided by tricky assignments and the tests are beastly. Do not even consider this class unless you have prior java coding experience. For extra fun,the entire last 2 weeks of the HW is about javascript, which they dont even cover.

I feel like he really cares about the class, but his teaching method is extremely inefficient. You will heavily rely on the TAs for the labs. Also, his tests seem almost impossible to complete within the time constraint allotted. He's a cool guy, but that's all I really have to say about him that is positive.

99% of this class is getting the very specific software to work on your computer. Every homework uses a different set of tools, and he bases the class on HIS machine, which is 32-bit Vista. Architecture incompatibilities abound.

He's a real nice guy, but i didn't get much from the class. I was one of the few people that went to all the lectures and it still didn't give me advantage in the class. It's not completely his fault, because they should make you have some previous experience before taking this class. This class isn't too bad if you understand the material.

It's not terribly hard to get a good grade, but you REALLY need to understand the material if you want to even have hope of getting an A on a test. Our last test was so hard that he had to curve the test so that a 30-something became a C. Attendance for lecture is basically pointless (he doesn't care), and you basically learn everything from TAs.

First of all, this class should not be an entry level class. Unfortunately it is. From the first day on out, huhns expects that you have had already experience with java. The lectures are usually pointless, and Labs/hwk have nothing to do with the material at lecture. Yes he grades on a curve, but still, I am hoping i get out of the class alive.

The lectures are completely useless. Once in the lab, it's mandatory to receive help from the TA; however, due to class size, they can never get to everyone. My labs are always late because it takes hours to finally understand. I dislike professors who use SSIs to teach students what they do not; I can never complete the homework without them.

Lecture is completely pointless. SI helps a lot with the homework, some of which is just crazy hard. The lab saves you, a free 100 for just showing up. The class is graded on a curve. The material is tough and poorly taught. Be prepared to use google constantly. TAs vary in helpfulness and basically do everything for Huhns. Avoid if possible.

Dr. Huhns was an ok teacher, but he wasn't great. The class is very heavy on the TA's, so be sure you befriend them. Huhns doesn't really teach what is on the test(AKA the lectures are pointless), so be sure to READ the book. Tests are open note and book, but they're still incredibly hard. Everything this graded on a curve. Just know it's tough.

The material is simple, but the directions can be very vague. He doesn't really teach the theory of programming very well. Just like the person below, 146 is next for me, so we will see what Huhns has taught us! Easy A but I'm not sure of the quality and I am a CS major, that matters!

The labs help. The homework is sometimes unfair, because you haven't learned the information yet. The test are extremely hard. The question make no sense. It hard to understand what you are supposed to do. Now I have to take CSCE 146... hope I learned enough.

i thought the material in this class was very very easy but also interesting and i had never programmed before in my life. if you really understand how to do the labs when finishing them then you'll be fine on the tests, which he always curves. the lectures are kind of pointless but he would help out on how to do the homework sometimes.

Intelligent and nice but an awful teacher. He wastes class time fiddling on his computer and reads slides as if he hadn't looked at them before. Certain TAs are better than others. Homework is frustrating. Tests questions are ambiguous and poorly written. Ask for help and you'll get it. But reading the book is your best bet. Avoid if possible.

This class is hard (material wise). It's not hard to pass, because he curves the test and your overall grade a lot. So don't worry too much about passing. He can be helpful if you ask questions. The labs will save you in this class. Be careful of your TAs. If you get the asian guy Yang Song, he is terrible at helping u in the lab. Just be aware. :)
