Fox is a great teacher. I had no interest in sociology before, but he made almost every class interesting. My friend had him too and he said he was mind blown every class. It's easy to get a good grade (I got an A) because you can rewrite your papers and use the book on quizzes. I didn't keep up with my journals very well but you probably should!

Although the journals and readings can take up time, stay on top of them! However, John is a great teacher. Always made class and the content interesting. As long as you stay on top of your work, it should be a fun class.

Expect lots of work and about 50 pages of writing over the quarter in addition to an impossible amount of reading. Also hands down the harshest grading professor to date

Easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. He definitely expects you to put work into your assignments, but the material is so interesting that you really don't even mind. He cares a lot about his students and his passion for sociology and great sense of humor keeps lectures engaging. I wish I could take this class again! It was that cool.

It was an ok class, you have to do a lot of reading and writing. 2 essays, and Journal entries for every week. You actually have to do your work and in order to do good you must show up. Lets you use notes and books on quizzes and final. This class is not a easy ride.

Good teacher, great class. But there is lots of reading and writing. 2 essays ( you can rewrite them for a better grade) , plus journal entries weekly on the reading, 5 scantron quizzes ( you can drop one), and a final.

He is a good teacher, his class was enlightening for me. Fox assigns much writing - 10 journals and 2 papers, which actually was helpful, since working on a paper makes you think over the subject a lot. Sometimes, though, he seemed too liberal in his views, too leftists, maybe, but it's probably personal. In general - I had a great experience :)

Do NOT fall behind in the reading or the JOURNALS. There are 2 papers due in the class which you can rewrite several times, except journals as they are due at the end of the quarter. He is a really good teacher. Very passionate. But he didn't like me. I shouldn't be able to tell. However, I strongly recommend him.

Smart, witty, engaging, & thoughtful. I learned a lot in this class. Participation in class discussions recommended. A good deal of reading & writing required, but it's interesting material. He's very fair and quite entertaining. Willing to accept alternate views & enjoys healthy debate. Not a class you'll slide through without putting in effort.

Hard but reasonable. Many homework but he give out many extra credit. He is not a hard grader. Just get use to his way of marking, you will do fine!

Sociology 1 - I just finished my second week of his class. DO NOT fall behind. He wants an essay he calls a journal every week. There is a new chapter to be read everyday and they are 30-40pgs. BUT already the class is a rewarding experience. Very laid back. Very reasonable policies. Tries to let everyone have their say. already lovin' the class.

Interesting professor and interesting class, but gives out a lot of work and is a hard grader so be prepared for that. Wouldn't recommend, especially if you already have a busy schedule.

Dr. John Fox is one cool guy. He is passionate about the field of sociology and it is evident in his lectures and his interaction with students. He is there for students when they need his help. He gives you ample opportunity to improve your grade whether it be through extra credit or paper rewrites. He is a fare grader and wants you to do well!

I found Dr. Fox to be quite good. He was passionate, knowledgeable and very devoted. His workload is however fairly robust and his grading rubric is sometimes ambivalent at best--though he rectifies this situation by giving copious amounts of extra credit assignments (a possible 20 extra credit points in a course with only 200 points).

John Fox is probably one of the best teachers I have ever had. The coursework is heavy, like the ten 5 paragraph journals, but you really get a lot out of it. It is also really easy to get extra credit in his class. Midterm was a little hard, and the final was an essay, but if you pay attention and show up, you will do fine.

Really funny and class discussions are entertaining. Doesn't take role and is laid back BUT assigns a TON of work! Not your typical sociology class, and he's up front that he grades really tough. Grades papers like an english teacher! I wouldn't recommend you take his class...
FAMMARI
Funny/interesting teacher but assigns TONS of work and is an extremely tough grader for a sociology course. Thought it would be easy but expect to put a lot more work than you would think, expects long writing assignments and to be written like you were in an English class

What a weird guy. Ive done all the coursework for his class but Im still getting a B. His assigned weekly classwork, a presentation as well as a 5-7 page research paper. Very interesting topics however he's a hard grader and you better stay on top of things to pass his course.

The class itself is really interesting but Dr. Fox assigns massive amounts of homework so if you have the time to read and write 3 chapters and a 3-page response every week PLUS a couple essays and movie analyses here and there, you should join. If you can't handle the amount of work outside of class, look for another professor.
