I am a psych major and took this class as a science option. I found this class very difficult to follow. The weekly quizzes were not easy. Quiz topics were very nitpicky. Textbook was also written by prof (VERY boring). If you didn't understand in class, there was no clarification in the text! Im in fourth year and took a W for this class.

One of the best profs I have EVER had. Going to class is helpful! Weekly Q's worth 20%, 1 midterm (30%), 1 final (50%). All exams are 10 definitions, and 1 essay. Definitely helped my interest in the subject. Moreover,he really loves his students and the subject!

Great prof, knows his stuff (students may find the topic dull). Exams are mostly based off of his powerpoint slides and vocabs. If listen closely, he drops certain hints about the questions for the exam. Don't go into course expecting it to be like other psych courses - it's completely different! (you'll learn a lot of new things)

Interesting class, material is a little hard to understand your self, so going to class is helpful! weekly quizes worth 20%, 1 midterm (30%), 1 final (50%). All exams are 10 definitions (from notes, not really textbook), and 1 essay (from a choice of 3 topics). Definitely peaked my interest in the subject, and prof really understands his stuff!

Psych 354/452: Awesome prof! You have to be pretty nerdy to appreciate his humour and he's more well-read than anyone I know - especially for books in his field. He uses his own books for textbooks so if you don't understand what he's saying in class you can read the text or vise versa.

The class was all about neural networks and his research. As interested as I am in cognition, I am not interested in machines that supposedly model human cognition, and that is the only thing his class was about. I was not expecting a class on neural networks; I was expecting a class with a broader focus and more relevance to human cognition.

Really great prof, knows his stuff... and even though it can be hard to grasp he makes it as interesting as possible. Make sure to keep up with the text readings and pay attention in lectures because he is great and explaining concepts. I would recommend this class to anyone!

Awesome prof. Thouroughly enoys what he teaches. Awesome examples. Hilarious to listen to and loves expresso. Concepts can be out there but makes sense of them. Easy to approach and helpful. All exams are written which in my mind is great. No textbook sucked. Some articles given are difficult to understand.

Great prof. Excellent introduction to cognitive science and relevant concepts. Heavy discussion on information processing, from several angles. I found it particularly interesting as a computer scientist. If you like to memorize a bunch of disjoint facts, rather than concepts, this not the course for you. Everything is related.

The class is not difficult, but he presents the material in such a way that the relevence of what is being taught is lost. I still don't see how studying a simple artificial network allows one to gain any insight into how the brain actually processes info. In my mind, if you need philosophy to defend a theory, what you are doing is not science.

This prof is a horrible educator. He preaches to the class and apparently, as he critiques other scientist (mainly psychologists) for thinking there theories are right, his theories are the right theories and not matter what everything else is wrong. I did not like that class because of the prof.

Great person. Somewhat reclusive, but highly passionate and articulate. He is interested in "sowing the seed". So if you are into what he does, you will be rewarded handsomely. However, his marking seems to be rather arbitrary. Still, I cannot compain, as I managed to land a B with relatively little effort.

Definately not a class for everyone. Dr. Dawson is obviously very intelligent, but the material is both uninteresting and difficult. After the entire term of cognition, information processing, I have failed to see the relevance of this and psychology. I didn't go into psych to learn about turing machines, networks, pattern associators, you know!!

Since we used a text he wrote in 1998 it is clear Dr. Dawson knows his material. His presentations are entertaining in spite of how dry and abstract the concepts seem to be. His music before class is a great way to get ready for some intense thinking.

This Dr. Dawson isnt hot but he is definitely smart. I do not get the impression that he is elitist and I find the course raises very interesting philosophical questions. His exam marking criteria is dubious though. And his book jumps from concrete to abstract in a paragraph so giving us page numbers to focus on would be helpful. Dr. Dawson = 9/10.

Awful prof, terrible class avoid at all costs! Boring and difficult, never talks about anything except his boring research. Tests are ridiculously hard, questions are poorly worded and are not representative of the class.
