Ochem 51B
Pros:1)Straight foward test; nothing tricky. 2)Lecture is clear and understand able. 3) Video is PROVIDED on youtube for further understanding and those who missed the class. 4) No need to read the textbook; studying his lecture + homework problems + some exercise from textbook is enough.5) He'll tell which material that won't be on the test

I am a chem major listening to Dr. Vranken's MOOC lectures. While he is clear and insightful, he goes very fast and there are times I have to pause and rewind to write down notes. At one point (lecture 7) several students asked him some basic questions which tells me he probably went too fast and lost a few people. SLOW DOWN! Lots of good info.

you'll only do really well if you're a bio major with countless hours to study on their hands, if you have a real major (chemical engineering, chemistry, biochem) then his class will be very fair and with a decent amount of effort you should come out with a B range grade. He's a little overrated but not by too much.
Chem 51B
Only professor that can keep a whole class awake at 8am. Is the most hardworking professor I've had yet. Even though he doesn't like teaching (which is why he only teaches once a year), he puts in 100% of his effort and makes the class a fun and great place to learn. Tests are PREDICTABLE! Discussion sheets, sapling, and keeping up=A
Chem 51B
He is not easy like what people says. His tests has questions you never seen before. I think he is overrated.
Chem 51b
This class was not as easy as people say. His tests are long and complicated at the same time. You really need to study hard to get a good grade in this class. Although he may be nice, he is not easy at all.
CHEM 51B
Van Vrnaken is an extremely nice professor. Although the class is not easy, his tests are. He is very funny and tells some jokes as he explains a reaction mechanism. His OH are helpful and he extends them during midterms and final. I highly recommend him.
CHEM 51B
He definitely made ochem at 8AM MWF worth it :) He is IN LOVE with what he does and is really clear about what he wants from you on the tests. Go to discussions and lecture!Great professor and I'm really glad I was able to be in his class.
Chem 51B
best chem professor i've ever had! lectures are clear and easy to follow if you print the lecture templates he posts online. homework is reasonable. tests are straightforward. take him!

He is the only Prof who could ever keep me wide awake at 8 am. Bravo. He's got great sense of humor, extremely intelligent and clear in his lectures. BUT you HAVE to go to lecture, miss 1 or 2 lectures and you're behind, miss more and you're doomed! Dis and OH very helpful and the curve is pretty great too!! highly recommend

Awesome professor. He's nice and always wants his students to do well, so go to OH to get questions answered! Exams are a lot like discussion questions, so definitely go to discussion for the worksheets. Have to agree with the guy below; some synthesis problems are harshly graded imo, I also got a few zeroes even though some steps were the same. All in all fair tests though, great professor. Definitely take him.
Chem51C
Great professor, but his exams are very annoying. You may understand the material, but the partial credit does not match the level of understanding you have. He loves giving 0 points, even if you are on the right track in a multi-step problem

Took it over the summer a lot of work and I had to study at least three hrs everyday after class to get an A. He is nice, helpful and he keeps lecture pretty interesting. His exams are fair. If you study and go to office hours for extra help you will do fine.
