At first, Pitelka seems easy going and the first test, at least for 101, was a breeze if you studied a bit. But, he grades papers hard, gives tons of reading, and attendance is mandatory. He does hold grudges against students! Overall, interesting lecturer but is not knowledgeable in areas other than Japan.
ASN250
He takes attendance everyday. Doesn't give out any work besides a couple of moodle forums and two papers. No midterm or final. Grades with a rubric. Answers emails very quickly. Very nice and knows everyone by name.
ASN250
He's a very nice and intersting professor who knows the material well. He does like to take attendance everyday though.

Lectures about history, but essays entirely on culture. Grades exactly to freshman core grading rubric, so follow that and you're assured a B or higher. 95% of class is lecture. Two quizzes/week is VERY annoying. Lots of work. Class discussions may be a little alienating if you're not interested in Asian Studies or have never been to Asia.
ASN 101
Although Mr. Pitelka is knowlegable and his lectures are decently entertaining, I don't think that he cares about his students unless you plan to study Asia in more depth. Also, if you are not a prolific writer, he will insult your writing, and you. He is also close-minded and holds grudges against students. Know what you are getting yourself into.
ASN 101
He is an awesome and engaging professor and I totally recommend anyone to take one of his classes. His classes are very interesting.
ASN 180
Professor Pitelka is rad! His classes are extremely informative and his wealth of knowledge about Asian studies is very inspiring. Be wary - his classes are extremely difficult! I took ASN 180 and ASN 101. I asked him how I could get an A in his class. If you follow his guidelines and bust your ass during the semester, it is possible to get an A. He's also extremely willing to write teacher recommendations for his students for grauate school. You are seriously missing out if you pass his classes up!!

We had REAL discussions about the readings, not straight from the book crap. The more interested people are, the better he teaches. Communication is easy and essential in order to get exactly what you want out of his class. He LISTENS.

Great prof., knows his stuff, especially good in small seminar class. Gets behind in his grading and such though. But his classes are very worthwhile.

Professor Pitelka is an excellent, and challenging teacher who gives a lot of work. He also is very, very tech savvy, and so the majority of his assignments are online. If you need help or just have any questions, he is extremely understanding and helpful. I highly recommend taking a class with him but be prepared to work hard.

I have had three classes with Pitelka and they have all been excellent. His lectures are straightforward, and his discussions are very student-centered and thought-provoking. He assigns a lot of reading, but it is all pertinent and very interesting; besides, he never expects people to read it all.
ASN180
This guy is boring and his tests come straight from his lectures...i hated attending class so much..it was like death every morning. you don't need to do any readings and all you have to do is study straight from the lecture notes he puts online...and it's an easy A-
asn 180
cut the guy some slack...he's basically the ONLY asian studies professor at oxy. he works very hard and still has time to be super nice and helpful. shame on oxy for not even trying to develop our asian studies department!
ASN 180
Enthusiastic and helpful; has realistic expectations. Lectures frequently follow readings. Essays are hard. If you put in some effort, this class is not too difficult and you can learn a lot.

Pitelka is a good guy and a good teacher. But seriously, who goes to Princeton to Major in Tea Ceremonies??? Anywho, I don't know if he should get tenure so quickly. Why so much reading, with such poor discussions?
ASN101
Teaches like he's still at Columbia, he's really intense sometimes it seems. Hopefully one day he will mellow out and relax a bit and give more slack on attendance and loosen up.
ASN 360
Pitelka is a smart guy -- he came from an Ivy league school, and he expects his students to use the brains they were given. Oxy students may be steadily decreasing in quality, but the faculty know what they are doing, and Pitelka's no exception.
asn 180
Some might say he is boring, but I would add that his lectures are extremely well-planned, easy to follow, and easy to take notes on. He is also very helpful if you have questions, and is one of the nicest and most good-natured professors at Oxy.
asn 101
boring, boring, boring. i expected more from someone who came from princeton. he's one of those profs who act nice, but aren't really

This guy is so boring I dropped the class. I would rather listen to waltz music with antz biting my butt than listen to him drone on about his "research".
