"Get ready to read" "Gives good feedback" "Tests are tough"

She likes to hop from subject to subject and you can easily get lost. Her tests are also hard cause its historical facts she expects you to already know.

English FYSM Taken for Credit:Yes Attendance: Not Mandatory Textbook Use: Essential to passing Rater Interest: Sorta interested Grade Received: A

She honestly cares so much for all of her students and will do anything to help you succeed. However, her lectures can go all over the place and get very dry at times.

ENGL2008 Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: Essential to passing Rater Interest: It's my life Grade Received: N/A

She is extremely approachable, very interested in helping her students succeed (both academically and personally) and tries her best to make the meterial relevant to everyday life. The reading list is fantastic! Attendance is important. Take notes, ask questions and go to office hours! Do this you are sure to have a great experience and mark.

ENGL2900 Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: Essential to passing Rater Interest: Sorta interested Grade Received: N/A

Great reading list. Demands attendance and participation. Casual lectures, very scattered at times. I found her exams really difficult considering she didn't teach us too much. It was very much a self directed class. She is very approachable.

Prof Hoey is great. She expects attendance...wow big deal! Technically we should all be showing up to class. She is very understanding under special circumstances. If you come to class prepared you'll do just fine. She's old-school. She demands attendance and participation. She's a fair marker and her exams are okay.

ENGL2008 Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: Essential to passing Rater Interest: Sorta interested Grade Received: N/A

Great class. It had an amazing reading list, she unlike many profs did use the textbook that you had to buy so it wasn't a waste of money. If you want to do well you must attend class. Not an easy marker, but if you try you'll do fine. Open to anything students had to offer.

I learned a lot. She kind of has to grow on you though, and her lectures seemed quite disorganized until you get used to them. Not an easy course, but a great book list. Prepare to do a lot of writing on the final exam! She was available out of class, open to interpretive ideas.

ENGL2008 Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: Essential to passing Rater Interest: Sorta interested Grade Received: N/A

Hoey is an old-school professor. She demands attendance, is a tough marker and expects an awful lot from students. She expects students to follow a very demanding reading schedule (~300 pages/week). She is not accommodating to students and difficult to contact. This is a very tough course that will take a lot of time and effort.

Prof Hoey is an old-fashioned teacher - demands attendance, favours those who show up. She will go to any length to help a student in distress. She has chosen a stellar reading list, and knows many of the authors personally. Avoid her classes at your peril!

MYTH2XXX Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: What textbook? Rater Interest: Really into it Grade Received: N/A

The only good thing about this class was that there was a good book assigned (Master and Margarita) and I met two good friends in the class. This was possibly the most BS class I've ever taken, the exam showed no logical consistency and the lectures were an exercise in who could be the best toady.

FYSM1004 Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: Essential to passing Rater Interest: Really into it Grade Received: N/A

Hoey over-sells herself (has 5 degrees, former students luuuv her), occasionally patronizes, and wanders in her presentations. She's eccentric. She's also enthusiastic, has a great deal of knowledge, and chose a great text. Good teacher for the high school to university academic/life transition. She cares, she's fair, and willing to work with you.

ENGL2008 Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: Essential to passing Rater Interest: Really into it Grade Received: N/A

Great course! Sure, she pronounces a few words strangely, but I still found her very clear, very fun, and very passionate about the subject material. The essays were brutal (but optional) and the exams were tough, but not impossibly difficult. A+ class, would take again.

The only real complaint I have about her course is the lengthy (15 page) essays that are worth a measly 15% each. On the other hand, her flexible grading system makes them OPTIONAL and her exams are straightforward (if again, long). Class rewards creative thinking, but discussion format means hearing a lot of ramblings by idiot classmates.

FYSM1005 Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: You need it sometimes Rater Interest: Meh Grade Received: N/A

Constantly tried to intimidate us with her 'prestige', but unlike my other professors, she shares an office with like 4 other people and has the same '@connect.carleton.ca' email as the students. On top of that, she tried to sound smart by saying 'particular' like 33 times a class, and made up her own 'big words'. Was also very bias with marking.

FYSM1005 Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: Essential to passing Rater Interest: Really into it Grade Received: N/A

Her semesterly "interviews" were kind of cool, but she wasn't very clear with her instructions. It was good for those making the transition between high school and university, very helpful in that respect (EXTREMELY structured) but I found the workload too much for a university course - more like high school. Not my style.

If you have any prior knowledge of mythology the course will be absurdly easy and you will find yourself rolling your eyes at the prof's frequent mistakes and disorganized lecture style. Prof. Hoey isn't a bad person but she seems out of her depth teaching at the university level. This was the worst academic experience I've had at Carleton.
