ENG3410
Professor Cohen was very nice and was very invested in his class. He was an amazing lecturer and was always extremely passionate about the course. The assignments were a bit tough, but learning Middle English and understanding Chaucer was actually fun because of his teaching style.

Cohen is an extremely knowledgeable professor and his Chaucer class is absolutely interesting. Attending class is a must, but his class is entertaining so why not go. You need to do the hw especially at the beginning of the semester. It's a fairly challenging course but you'll come out a Chaucerian expert.

Professor Cohen is great! His lectures are interesting, and you can tell that he really loved to teach the course. I would have liked this class a lot more if I had a different TA. She graded her group of students much more harshly than any else. Still, the class is good and I would recommend it! 5 papers, weekly reading quizs, and a final.

Myths of Britain is v. good but don't be fooled from some comments: it is a TON of work and the grading curve is hard. Also: only course at GW I've seen where three students convicted of academic dishonesty. Hardcore; don't take it lightly. He'll call you out if he sees you texting. Obvious he cares about being present, not just occupying a seat.

He's a brilliant teacher, and funny too. He teachers to the class and not a single person in the class slept. I've not talked to one person that didn't like his class--and the writings are really doable and only one page! The final paper is 5 pages and easy to write. All in all the perfect WID class :)
ENGL040
Professor Cohen is one of the most passionate professors I have had. He gives quizzes after each reading which can be challenging but also gives a ton of extra credit. There are also four small papers and a large one at the end of the semester that are not too bad. The final was challenging but doable. Do all the extra credit and u will be fine.
ENG40
There is so much extra credit available in this class it is fairly easy to get a grade, provided you simply do all the work and go to class. Make sure you have a good TA, they really make the course! And know that the more innovative your argument, the better the grade on the essay, regardless of everything else!
ENG40
Great class. I was iffy about being an English major and am now very confident in my choice. Professor Cohen is so knowledgeable. Only three short papers, one long one and a final. Go to class and section. Read the books. You will do well. The TA's for this class are also amazing. So helpful, kind and genuinely interested in the students.

Taking class now. Readings not long but you must know them well: weekly quizzes and frequent writing assignments. Very demanding prof, but great conversations as a result (even though 90 students in room). TAs are great.
ENGL40
I was not interested in medieval english literature, but Prof. Cohen actually made it really interesting! There's a lot of reading, but assignments were straightforward, the final was a breeze as long as you had read everything, and I actually looked forward to lectures. He shows a movie clip every single class.
ENGL040W
Lectures are clear and quick and the readings are interesting so it's a good class to take to satisfy a WID.

He's good. You shouldn't take his courses if you think you'll get an easy grade, and if you're not interested in literature than you should not waste your time. But if you are you can't do better. Scary smart. Wide range. Very devoted to improving writing, close reading, and deep analysis. Tough questions!!
ENGL112
After three years of trying finally got into his Chaucer class; now I understand why only seniors get into it. Very difficult but very enjoyable. Listens well to students. Pushes you to write a v. good paper. Knows the contemporary criticism and the classics. V. good course.
Eng112
Cohen is an excellent professor. He is passionate about his material and he cares about his students. That being said, if you aren't interested in Chaucer the course is awful. The long paper was helpful in sparking my interest, but he is very bad at starting discussion, so the class is difficult to sit through.

There are much easier ways to fulfill your humanities and WID requirements than this course!!
engl40w
Took for WID. Not easy way to fulfill. Don't take the course unless the materials (shakespere, beowulf) interest you.

Took this course for the WID requirement. Surprised at how much I learned. Now I am adding an English minor to my Economics major. Would not recommend this course to anyone who doesn't like to think deeply about what they read, or who doesn't want to work HARD on writing. TAs are great as well.
