Pretty interesting and somewhat easy class. You have 20 lectures around 80 min each. 4 tests and 2 concert reviews (no cumulative final). All test questions come from lecture and listening examples, which consist of the songs and facts. Questions pretty straightforward. Never used the textbook don't get it. Had to use proctor ($25 per test).Take it

Great class, you'll do great if you attend each class, take good notes and study the listening examples he sends out.

I loved this class. I took it online and had like a 100 average. The information is super interesting if you listen and the exams are all questions straight from the lectures. I have a bit of a background in music which probably helped me but still, he really knows his stuff. Just listen and take notes and you'll be fine. Never used the textbook.

do not take this class. hamant is a cool guy but a terrible professor. he rambles and has ridiculous expectations for any student. tests are mostly subjective true/false questions and ask for random members of bands.

Overall your grade in this class is based on your note taking and listening skills. He talks about everything that is going to be on his exams however, he may only say a specific piece of information once. The class is not impossible if you show up, but it is certainly not an "Easy A".

This is a HISTORY of Rock course, not "the study of modern rock"; it's is for people who appreciate all kinds of music. Easy if you have background in music, but can be a challenge if you don't. He's a good professor if you bother to listen in class (most sleep and wonder why they don't understand the material). Exams are long but not too hard.

Boring boring boring and hard to pay attention in class so you don't remember the information. Then he puts it on a quiz or midterm and you cant remember anything. The class stinks!

Alan Hamant is an insightful professor. People complain about this class because most (and I mean, next to all college students) do not have any knowledge as to the history of rock and roll. A little disappointed that we did not cover more--but you cover so much in a single semester. I highly recommend this class to lovers of rock history.

Do not take this class for an easy A. Like a previous rater said, "record his lectures." seriously. Everything you need to know is in his lectures, the textbook is practically useless and his exams are hard. It WAS an interesting class but difficult.

I really enjoyed this class. I thought his comments were always insightful and found that he was really knowledgable about the history of rock. However, going to lectures is necessary if you want to get an A. Tests are really easy if you went to lectures. Not much studying necessary.

Class is boring. Nice guy but talks way to much and his tests are hard. You have to study a lot for them if you want to get a good grade. The class is also easier if you have some kind of musical background.

This class has changed a lot from previous semesters. He rambles a lot and mentions things briefly in passing then expects you to know the background information of it. Exams are poorly worded and confusing, wouldn't recommend this class if you're looking for something easy. It's still really interesting, though.

I think a lot of people automatically think that this is a "fluff" course since it covers rock & roll, etc. that requires little/no work. As long as you show up to class, pay attention, and take notes, you'll be fine. Sure, he rambles on at times, but overall not too bad of a teacher.

88% of the class is based on tests. Tests are long, and maybe more than 100 questions. If you don't do well on the tests, you're screwed. I was able to manage a B+ in this class. I would not recommend it to anyone. Stressful for a 100-level class. PICK SOMETHING ELSE FOR BREATH REQUIREMENT!!!

This class is not what you would expect. Notes are hard to take because he rambles. The first three months are spent learning about blues, jazz, country...pretty much everything but rock. Tests are pretty hard but mostly true/false. I hardly studied or took notes and managed to get As and Bs on the tests. But I would not recommend this class.

Do not take this class looking for an easy A. I've played an instrument basically my whole life and thought I would like the class, but NO. He rambles on and the exams are ridiculously hard. He expects you to remember everything he says. I hate him. It's so hard to pay attention in class. Don't take it.

Go to class, the hard part is his exams have some bias/opinion which is annoying but half the questions are true/false. When taking notes, write down every name, date, description of music style, and song and you will do fine. I never studied and got high 80s on the exams, but I went to every class.

don't listen to the other reviews. if you actually are interested in rock, folk music, and jazz, then you will love this class. its NOT a joke class and definitely not an easy A, but if you take notes and go to class you should come out with a B. its extremely interesting if you are actually into the subject
