HIST 385-0
04
One of the best professors at Emory, hands down. I will miss those discussions more than I ever thought I could, even when it meant reading all night before class.
Hist 185-0

Dr. Allitt is an amazing professor, who truly allows students to think about the subject matter and analyze the historical contexts involved. His class is discussion-based, so be ready to complete the readings and participate. He is more than willing to help students during office hours, so make sure to visit him once during the semester.
HIST 185
Dr. Allitt is easily one of the best professors at Emory. I am so thankful to have had his class as a freshman, because of how much he taught me about writing, reading and studying well. He is not an easy grader, and i loved his emphasis on discussion. Take Allitt if you want to learn something!!

great lecturer, possibly the best at emory. on the other hand, he's pompous in a bad way, he believes that embarrassing students is an acceptable way to motivate, and he assigns unreasonable amounts of hw and work in general. so only take one of his classes if you truly wanna study and learn the subject...because you will if you take it
HIST190
Really nice guy. Definitely knows what he is talking about. A little bit pompous sometimes, but not in a bad way because he deserves to be... he's really smart. Very approachable and loves to see you at office hours. Definitely not too hard of a grader.
HIST101
Dr. Allitt is one of the best at Emory. He's not easy by any stretch, but he cares immensely about the subjects he teaches and his students. He pushes you to the limit in the best way. Be warned, however-- if you want to half-ass this class, don't even bother. If you're ready to do some work, you'll get one of the best at Emory.

This class is no easy ride. Allitt pushes you to the limits, and sometimes it is uncomfortable. Be ready for tons of reading, some more interesting than others. You MUST be prepared for this class in order to sound look lke a complete idiot. Allitt rarely gives A's, but his passion is infectious and you'll learn more than you realize.
HIST488
I have had him for 3 classes, and he is easily one of the best teachers at Emory. He truly cares about the subject matter. Most important, though, is that his classes are not "easy." They are for people that actually want to learn, and are willing to put the appropriate work into it. I would recommend him to everyone.
HIST202
I DID read his book, "I'm the Teacher, You're the Student" and found it to be about that which all teachers believe. If you want to get a passing grade for showing up, then skip his class. If you want to learn, and are willing to do the work to become an educated, productive member of our society, his class is for you.

Although strong in lecture, his attitude and poor regard for students is hard to overlook. He often talks down to students and his grading applies to items off topic. I found him to be rigid and cold. There is a lot of reading in his classes and SOME of the material is downright BORING. Proceed w/ caution. Class may negatively affect GPA.
US History
I wonder how many of these students have read Allitt's book "I'm the teacher, you're the student" in which he makes no secret of the fact that he considers the students at Emory to be morons.
2.0
he's a good teacher but very difficult. He grades tougher on writing than English professors
Hist 232
Great lecturer. Smart-ass, pompous jerk also. Class is interesting unless you’re the one he picks on. Quite delusional about the importance of his classes. Often meanders through a topic and only keeps students awake by randomly embarrassing them in front of the class.
Teach 12
Outstanding lecturer - synthesizes information from various sources in a superb manner with references to multiple books and primary source documents. Learned a great deal and came to understand even more.

Dr. Allitt is a wonderful teacher, a gifted storyteller, and really makes history come alive. I had the immense pleasure to have two of his classes which always required a lot of critical thinking. I miss his classes!
