Be prepared to take this class again if you are taking it with him. Its more like an english language class. Doug knows how to teach but is a pathetic grader. He thinks all the students are enrolled only in his class and have nothing else to do.

Worst educational experience I have ever had. Lectures are clear and well done but labs and grading are ludicrous

If you are taking it with him, you've already heard how he is. And all I have to say about him and his ways of grading is "nonsense". His teaching skills are garbage when it comes to unfair grading pointing out where you left white space, and extra comma etc. Take his class if you wanna just give up hope.

Doug will teach you everything you need to know and teach it very well, but his grading scale is absolutely ridiculous and he gives no mercy for late work, even if your excuse is valid. Labs are graded like english papers and one small mistake will put you in the C range. Take his class, drop it, and take it again next semester with his notes.

Avoids case-by-case arbitration on everything by constructing elaborate rules for grading, attendance, extra credit, etc. To compensate for low grades he offers extra credit opportunities that, though they may help your grade, will use up all of your time. He is always available to help, but expects you to rise to his freakish level of dedication.

Never take any class with Doug Hogan! If you consider yourself to have an above average intelligence, then you'll learn nothing from him, he'll just waste your time and pick on your lamest grammar mistakes. He is a great professor for those who need special hand holding at all times.

The hardest grader I've ever seen, as people said. Yes, he knows how to teach, very helpful and enthusiastic. But TOO much time consuming. You have to spend a HELL LOT of time fixing very MINOR mistakes. I know he really wants to help students, but come on. One could be lenient sometimes, but never. Too conservative. Unable to understand.

Doug is just about the only professor that cares whether you learn the material or not. You will learn a lot about what mathematics is actually about. After taking this course with Doug, I was able to learn just about any other area of mathematics (though it is never easy; just hard work). Take Doug for CMPSC 360!

VERY strict about deadlines and details on assignments, gives you extra percentage points on assignments but then refuses to negotiate any grades. Would not allow homework t be turned in EARLY for job related absences.

First off, I would highly recommend Hogan. He is extremely knowledgeable and by far the best CMPSC prof at Penn State. You will learn A LOT. However, MANY people hate his class with a passion because he is the MOST nitpicky grader you'll ever meet and in order to receive an A/B, you are going to need to visit his office hours at least twice a wk.

Worst professor here on campus! His grading scale is absurd, not helpful at all because he'll just repeat your questions back to you. I'm so glad he's not teaching CMPSC 465 any more.

Doug is by far the hardest grader I have ever had. That being said, it is very possible to do well in this class, but you will have to work for it. Try to show interest in the class, and definitely go to office hours frequently. It's an interesting class, though, so that makes it easier to do the hard work that is necessary.

Honestly, there are no words to describe this class. Doug is probably one of the best professors I have ever had in any subject. You walk into lecture and feel his passion for the subject. While he is infamous for his difficult grading and long exams, you will not learn this subject any better from any other professor. Doug is the man.

He is not a good teacher. He is not all that clear in lectures. He has a crazy grading system that is impossible to explain. If you ask him a question he just repeats everything youve said to him. Plus he is just really a hard teacher.

Doug's come a long way since I took him 2 years ago. He may have quite possibly transformed into one of the best (if not THE best) professors in the CMPSC department. He puts his heart and soul into his teaching and it really shows with how much we all learned. His notoriously rough grading aside, you'll be very happy you took Doug.

Doug Hogan, man. It's a love/hate relationship when it comes to this guy. You'll love that he's the best instructor in the CS department, but you'll hate that he's the harshest grader on this planet. You'll do a lot of work, you'll cry at every asinine mistake he points out, but you'll walk away with a boatload of knowledge. Take Doug, just do it.

Doug's grading system is absolutely insane. He obsesses over tiny, inconsequential details. The projects are also a huge amount of work. That being said, he's a great teacher, I learned a ton, and he's extremely knowledgeable and eager to help. Exams are very fair as well.

Doug is awesome for 360. He really ensures that you learn all the material. Lectures and homework are at a good pace, and are very fair. Exams are very fair. If you put in a lot of work you should do well in this course.
