"Tests are tough" "Skip class? You won't pass."

Stats is not an easy course to teach, but Petry does it the best by far. Attendance is not mandatory, and if you dont go you will fail guaranteed. He curves every test 6-10% and the overall course. If you go to class and do the homework it is a manageable A. Everyone ripping on Petry for his teaching style for this course is wrong.

He's a great professor and teaches really well, but if you're someone like me who isn't interested in statistics and rarely goes to class, the exams will be super hard. Go to class and you will be fine. Do the homework YOURSELF and you will do really well. It can be tricky, but it's not impossible.

It is an easy class. Slightly more difficult than ECON 202 but still way below engineering class level. Just do the practice exams and you'll be fine. Homeworks are useless

Hate this class. Homework was hard and no related to the tests whatsoever. Going to class or to TA discussions was awful as well. Petry is a good teacher but the class itself is hard. I heard if you take it in the spring the class is easier so I would recommend that. Thank God he curves the class a lot.

He kind of just reads the slides during lecture. The Aplia homework is very different than the types of questions on the tests. to prepare for the tests your going to have to teach yourself a lot of the material. The practice tests are really helpful. The material is pretty simple but the class is much harder than it should be.

Least favorite class at UIUC. Petry does not care about students. If it weren't for the TA's, he wouldn't even know what was going on in his own class outside of the lectures. He used Aplia this semester and it was much more difficult than Lon Capa, yet he did not care at all. I usually would say to suck it up, but avoid him if you can.

He is really friendly to anyone. But overall, the materials in class was very logical arranged. So, it will be very easy if you follow his course pack step by step.

Nothing on the homework is used on the test. Petry reads out of a course pack which is extremely useless except for the practice exams. There are no examples to see. Just an equation and answer. Bad materials. Bad structure. Bad teacher. Bad class all together. None of the material will be used again unless you're a stat major.

Easy class, good professor. I learned a medium amount, he could have been a little better at explaining but in total still explained things pretty well. The tests are pretty simple and he has a positive attitude and is willing to help.

All he does is read out of the course packet. He doesn't write out the problems as he does them, but pretty much just speaks them to you. If you're a visual learner, you're better off just teaching it to yourself.

Petry made class as interesting as possible, and was an incredibly funny guy. The tests were difficult, though there was a healthy curve on the second one. I got an A- without touching the textbook and studying for a couple hours the night before exams. I would definitely recommend him for macro.

Had him for 103, he is a very dry lecturer but class is basically mandatory due to i clickers. He uses a lot of questions from old exams so study those, however, the essay questions are 20% of each test and is where most of the test points are lost.

Great teacher. Econ 203 is a terrible class to begin with and the homework, tests, and class material have nothing to do with each other. He is nice though and is always willing to help.

Enthusiastic professor, but the class is poorly structured. The intense homework load trains you to become an Excel/StatPlus pro, but none of the functions learned are useful come exam time.

Had Petry for 103 and 303 which is basically 103 on steroids. He teaches it like history and exams have less math than other professors who teach it. Attendance not mandatory but you need to go to do well. Petry is passionate about econ and was the person who sparked my interest in the subject. All in all, great professor. Highly recommend.
