Regardless of what people say, he is a great teacher and a great person to be friends with. He is the best conductor I have ever had the pleasure of playing under. He requires a lot of his students, but it pays off. You can learn a lot about life and how to live it by taking his class.

WJ Julian spent thirty years and the bulk of his professional career building the UT Band program. Sousa has managed to tarnish it in less than half the time. And he's audacious enough to believe that he's as great as Julian. Completely oblivious, not that he'd care if he actually did understand.

When this man came to UTK, his goal was create a wind band program to rival that of North Texas. 15+ years later, all he has accomplished is the destruction of the reputation and excellence of The Pride of The Southland Marching Band, and the wind band program is still as obscure as it was in the mid 60s. More politician than educator.

Dr. Sousa is a musical genius. While his delivery can be very crude, most students find it hilarious and respond very well to his direction. He is an outstanding band director and knows how to get results. He is only Satan incarnate if you piss him off or do something stupid.

If you're not ready to work hard and follow the rules to a T, his ensembles (the Pride especially) are NOT for you. Highly traditional, boundless work ethic. Unorthodox (some could say unprofessional at times) teaching style, but he loves his students and glows at their achievement and tenacity.
