Regardless of what people say, he is a great teacher and a great person to be friends with. He is the best conductor I have ever had the pleasure of playing under. He requires a lot of his students, but it pays off. You can learn a lot about life and how to live it by taking his class.

WJ Julian spent thirty years and the bulk of his professional career building the UT Band program. Sousa has managed to tarnish it in less than half the time. And he's audacious enough to believe that he's as great as Julian. Completely oblivious, not that he'd care if he actually did understand.

CONDUCTING301 Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: It's a must have Rater Interest: It's my life Grade Received: N/A

When this man came to UTK, his goal was create a wind band program to rival that of North Texas. 15+ years later, all he has accomplished is the destruction of the reputation and excellence of The Pride of The Southland Marching Band, and the wind band program is still as obscure as it was in the mid 60s. More politician than educator.

Dr. Sousa is a musical genius. While his delivery can be very crude, most students find it hilarious and respond very well to his direction. He is an outstanding band director and knows how to get results. He is only Satan incarnate if you piss him off or do something stupid.

If you're not ready to work hard and follow the rules to a T, his ensembles (the Pride especially) are NOT for you. Highly traditional, boundless work ethic. Unorthodox (some could say unprofessional at times) teaching style, but he loves his students and glows at their achievement and tenacity.

Can be difficult to work with but knows how to get results. Will always challenge you to grow as a musician. Does a great job of bringing in excellent guest composers/conductors to work with the Wind Ensemble. Must be thick-skinned to succeed in course but it is definitely worth the experience.

Love him or hate him, the results speak for themselves. Some say he's evil incarnate, but he's incredibly passionate about what he does and will work with those who are willing to work to help them become what they are capable of being.

Dr. Sousa is an amazing teacher. All you have to do to succeed with him is to do what is asked of you. Its not difficult to follow the rules of the "Pride." If you do that, Dr. Sousa is great. If you don't then you're practically asking for his foot to be up your ass. He's a great man, teacher, and leader and deserves more credit than he gets!

Dr. Sousa is awesome. He may be a hardass, but as they say,"If you're not making waves, you're not kicking hard enough" He is an inspirational director, although he is a bit closed-minded about drill. He upholds an enormous amount of tradition and is always willing to work with students who want to work.

Excellent leader. He's not rude, but he will yell at you, only if you're making stupid mistakes. And Rocky Top is short now so the pulse won't drag with such a large band and such a huge stadium. Things were smaller in Julian's day. And Sparks was a crook! Just ask Senator Lamar Alexander.
