Do not take him or his class. It's supposed to be a common curriculum class, but this will drain your gpa. If you have better options take someone else. He is very unhelpful and close minded. I never felt comfortable in class or enough to talk to him as a student. He is very difficult on papers. I'm a fairly decent writer and received awful grades.

RUN FAR, FAR AWAY! This is the worst teacher at Loyola! He exepects students to dedicate way too much time outside of class on his subject (forgetting that we have like 6 other classes). Quizzes and tests are impossible no matter how hard you study and pay attention. Ruthless. I thought priests were supposed to be nice!

this class is taught on a graduate level, def. not undergrad. he is disorganized, never returns work, poorly prepares students for exams and seems to hate students. i'm not sure how this man is a teacher. its almost like he messes with us trying to see how hard he can make it. i am an A student that has never struggled like this in a class before.

Such a ridiculously difficult teacher. Quizzes everyday that require you to read 50+ pages a night and 150 slide powerpoints. After reading both he still only quizzes you on unimportant details. I didn't learn much in this class and was constantly frustrated. Got the lowest grade I've received in college in this course.

Father Gerlach is really, really tough. This is not a class for the light-hearted. I really struggled due to the amount of work and rhe difficulty of tests. But I learned a lot.

Don't take him if you want an easy A. If you are genuinely interested in the subject and are willing to put forth the extra effort, by all means take him. Great professor.

I took him for World War I during the summer. Father Gerlich really knows his subject and made it really interesting. He was always willing to answer any questions. He provided a ton of information via Blackboard that was helpful for preparing for the final. His demeanor can be really intimidating but I learned so much in his class.

NOT RECOMMENDED! ANYBODY IS BETTER!The professor is definitely impossible. He knows his history but terrible at explaining the material well. CLASS IS BORING! INSOMNIA RECOMMENDED! I worked extermely hard for this class and still only got a D+, studying 6 hrs a day for those quizzes and study 48 hrs for those test.

He really knows his stuff. If you are truly interested in History, take him. If you want an easy A, stay away.

DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!! I loved history before I took Gerlich. Every time you come to class the quizzes are worth half of your participation grade for the day. If you enjoy studying4 hours every night for a good grade then this is the class for you, if not take him for later requirements.

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Horrible! He stands in front of the class lecturing and reading off power points. I'd rather be in a room of screaming toddlers at holy name then in this class. he is very demeaning and demands a lot. Unless you want to spend 3 hours a night reading do not expect an A. He never encourages seeing him if you need help

Worst class I have taken ever. Id rather watch paint dry. The class is impossibly hard even if you study two hours every night. Don't expect an A.

Well I had him this semester and I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM for anyone. The amount of material he expects you to learn is tooo much for anyone to be able to handle and his tests are about 200 questions each.

His class is very demanding and the quizzes every class are hard to keep up with. In order to do decent in this class you have to use the readings, slide show, and answer questions. It's a ton of work for a core class. And yes i know this is college blah blah. It's hell if you wait and do not start studying for the next quiz after each class.

Worst professor i have ever had.He does not care about the students. He gives quizzes EVERY class, which are too detailed. I think the class requires too much if you are not a history major. If he wanted to do quizzes at least do weekly quizzes not one every class. He acts like his class is the only class there is to study.

He is a very demanding professor. If you study well (meaning: go to class, do the readings, answer review sheet around an hour to two hours of study per day) you will do well. If you decide to start studying a week before class having not paid attention before, then you will not get an A - maybe a C or a B. Be a student and study. The A will follow

Gerlich does give a study guide for the quizzes that you can find the answers to pretty easily, but it's almost impossible to not fall behind in the reading sometimes. At the end of the semester I tried bringing up my grade and spent about 3 hours a night studying for this class alone. Not necessarily a difficult teacher, but very demanding.
