SKIP CLASS? YOU WON'T PASS. TOUGH GRADER

Great professor! Lecture based with 3 open book quizzes, 3 papers + 1 open book final. Don't be fooled, just bc it's open note doesn't mean its easy. You can use the textbook but a lot of the answers he's looking for come specifically from lecture. If you have questions go to his OH or email him-he's super helpful and genuinely wants you to do well

Health Econ wasn't bad at all. I'm not even an Econ major but I still pulled out with a B-. Just need to know how to write a good paper and you will pull out with a decent grade. Also, he loves class discussion.

Health Economics lectures were interesting. Many data handouts. He was picky on quizes, sometimes asking for unimportant information. Hard to think outside the box in the "opinion" papers, because he expected only what he had mentioned. Allowed participation, but would shut you down most of the time, therefore only the brave ones participated :(

This teacher very intelligent and tries to make you question the types of laws and the economic reasons for them. If you attend class and write down everything relevant (not the rambling of questions), you will pass the class. Everything is open note and book.

Incredibly intelligent guy. However, class attendance is mandatory if you want to pass his class as he doesn't use textbooks and his quizzes are completely based off lecture. Aside from quizzes, you write defended opinions. These can be a difficult if econ isn't a natural subject for you. All of his quizzes and papers are curved. Challenging course

He's a nice guy. Has a good personality and is easy to get along with. It seems that he is a fair grader - tests are open note and he grades on a curve. But his lectures are kindof all over the place - it's hard to know what he wants you to know for tests. He makes a lot of interesting points but doesn't connect them- it's hard to see his point.

Hated him at first, but I'm glad I took his class. He really makes you think outside the box for everything. It's so interesting to get a fresh perspective on every crazy idea. Papers were fun to write, just be sure to write as many econ arguments as you can. Come to class and take notes. No outside reading except class handouts.

Great professor if your interested in subject. Write down everything he writes on the board and skim the required book and you'll be fine(exams are open notes/books). For papers, just make as many economically logical arguments as you can think of and you'll get an A.

Good professor!! Challenges your thinking and status quo as you know it. People mistake his replying a question w/a question for rudeness but it's just to poke holes at your story (well intentioned) for you to see a different side - VS just telling you the different side. Recommended!!!

You don't need a textbook for this class at all. The only thing you need to do is to understand the handouts and take notes whenever necessary. Overall, I like this class. My suggestion would be that the professor could more clearly point out what we are supposed to know for the tests.

I got an A, but I would never take his class again for sure. He appears to be impatient when answering students' questions. Also You'd better not ask more than 3 questions. otherwise, he'd say he'd said enough.

Hanson;s I/O course was useless. The course had no structure and he presented little if anything useful. This was particularly disappointing after Tabarrok's course.

Unfair, I think he is not smart but he does master his topic. He does not give a lecture. he gives a sermont. He has the same homework for years same exams for years. The students who can manage to have them get good grade. Unfair because he is so unclear that students who do not have the tests before the exam have little chance to do well. He know

Good refresher course for grad students. Homework assignments help you focus and prepare for exams. Prof is a bit verbally abusive to students who speak up in class.

Tests are tough, term paper graded on points made not style, composition, content (i.e. forget English composition), Hanson is supersmart and he does a great job keeping the topics interesting, his one shortcoming is lack of clarity in his questions. A bit condescending at times, but he's probably just trying to keep the thinking going forward.

Follow advise for an A: Tests based strictly on lectures, come to every class. Next, write defended opinions giving the pros and cons of your argument. Overall, you will learn a great deal from his lectures. Dr. Hanson is very intelligent, a bit sarcastic at times, but hilarious to the rest of the class.

Exams are based on the weekly homework assignments which he sets up in each preceding class. Thus, class notes are important. Prior understanding of price theory very helpful. His big weakness: lack of clarity. One exam question everyone save one got wrong because of very poor wording. Problem: he makes easy concepts unnecessarily complicated.
