Best professor I have had to this date. Very knowledgeable and helpful. I enjoyed going to his class because I grew as an artist. His assignments opened new doors for me.

David always talks about what students are doing well, but he's a hard marker. He did a lot of critiques, had us try many new drawing techniques, always explained assignments clearly, and as long as we put in good time and effort he was always delighted with everyone's work. Good class to take if you want to expand your basic skills.

David is a fantastic studio professor. His comments make you think, and he's very open minded towards chosen subject matter. He likes to see that you've done research on your topic, but he is very helpful in regards to critique. Highly recommended.

He definitely has very set ways, in the way he views art and the art world. But it was a very enlightening class and I learned a hell of a lot in it. In his intro to art class he definitely didn't hold back which I thought was refreshing and the way he interacts with the class is great too.

Garneau stubbornly maintains a very rigid definition of "good art." The man is so assured of the flawlessness of his own criteria for grading art that he refuses to listen to anything his students say. Any conversation with Garneau turns into a condescending oration. Good luck getting a word in edgewise.

Funny teacher. He is very smart and knows what he is talking about. He will gladly speak with you to clarify anything. The class itself is difficult but Garneau does his best to teach it. Don't skip, you can easily miss something that will be worth tons on the midterm and final. Doesn't post notes.

Did not buy the textbook and had no problems. He was nice enough to allow me to rewrite my art review because I did it incorrectly. Very helpful when it came to the midterm and the final with very clear outlines. Sorry to say, I am still not an art fan.

I know people who dropped this class immediately because they found David "arrogant." David is incredibly intelligent, very well versed in the art world, and really funny. I ended up with a 97 on the term paper and an 80 in the overall class just by listening to what he said in class. I really reccomend his Art 100 class!

Learned a lot from this prof. I loved going to the lectures, he was really funny and made class interesting. You'll never see him wear anything other than black. Found my $200 textbook completely useless though. Final and midterm were a lot harder than expected! Group work and review are easy. Recommended! You will learn a lot from him.

The only reason I took this class was so I could take sculpting next semester, but I found he had many interesting things to say. People who have a problem with his humor need to remove a certain stick from somewhere. Didn't really look forward to the lectures, but that may be because they were on T and R. Good class, I just wasn't interested

In his first classes the art that was talked about wasn't what I was looking for, but with each class I found myself coming back, eager to learn more from him. He engages his students in the class discussions, and makes us really think about what we learn. Really enjoyed his energy and enthusiasm, would be happy to take another of his classes!

David Garneau demonstrated an amiable knowledge for his subject, and a passion for art that makes listening to him and learning from him a pleasure. He is abnormally thorough when explaining expectations for assignments, and exceptionally fair with tests, giving the entire class the questions of each test beforehand. A+, Garneau.

I loved this class so much. People who think he is critical and opinionated have never been to a real art school. He is honest and intelligent, and offers constructive criticism. If you are easily offended you may find him harsh, but nothing he says is unjustified. Learned A TON from him!

He is arrogant, too opinionated for his own good and forces you to use only the mediums that are his fav. The assignments are personally invasive and he is never clear about his instructions in class. The class was ok but I wouldn't take one from him again.

Proffessor Garneau is my favourite teacher so far at the U of R. Some people disliked him for his abruptly in-your-face style in general (often mixed with tasteful humour?), but he really is a nice guy, and very intellegent overall. I'm going to be specifically looking for him when picking future classes!

Class got better as time passed. He has powerpoints, which you have to copy down but taking notes was easy. Midterm, assignment (based on gallery visit),Project (10 minute group presentation) and final were not very difficult, it's easy to get 80%.There is a visit to Mackenzie Gallery (not mandatory-you can go on your own time but group tour helps).

David is very knowledgeable about his subject although class often got boring and weird. The midterm was easy since he gave us most of the questions. This didn't happen for the final as we ran out of time at the end of the course and barely got a final outline. When people emailed him questions, he was kind of rude. Overall, a good prof. though.

His taste leans heavily towards concrete concepts in art. In my opinion there is something equally important about formal qualities, and Mr. Garneau should not force this opinion of his on others. Not all art must have obvious political/social statements, some art is subtle.

Excuse me but: ?Making students feel dumb is the only way he feels good about himself apparently?? Wow that comment shows how ignorant you really are. You must be one of those people who failed the midterm? which was thoroughly explained with all 3 possible essay questions posted in the review. He?s a great prof if you listen and show up to class.

A real know it all. Thought he was alright at the start. Emailed him two different questions and got a very rude response. Making students feel dumb is the only way he feels good about himself apparently. Also, he said he would mark the essays easy on the midterm.. did not happen. Overall: Extremely rude, disappointing, deceiving and embarrassment.

At first, you won't like this man and may even be a bit offended. However, sit through it and you'll learn that David is amazing. He lectures are never boring and his tests are easy. He obviously really enjoys what he does and his attitude is contagious. The group presentations are a bit tiring, but it's easy marks.
