I took him freshman year. I'm a senior now, and he's still one of the best professors I've taken. He knows what he is doing, and his understands his students. He's approachable and personable. You may be put off the UW subject he's teaching, but he's worth it. Top man.

He is pretty helpful in terms of improving your writing. The readings are boring, though, and the online participation can be annoying. Overall, he is a pretty good professor

only 3 papers for entire class, not a lot of work like other UW's are. lets you revise your papers which is HUGE, mine went from a 75 to a 90. Group paper sucks, but he is a fair grader. classes can be long and boring, dont take the 8am, you will not want to go-ever. a lot of reading in the first half of semester, but gets easier as you go on

One of the least helpful writing/english professors you will ever meet. Thinks everyone in class still writes like a high-schooler and gives pointless assingments to correct this alleged flaw. Supposedly lets you revise work but never gives more than 5 points extra and NEVER explains why your revision didn't get a higher grade. DO NOT TAKE HIM

Great Guy and really normal. Not one of those stereotypical "weird professors." If you put in the effort he will too. He is very generous with revisions and always willing to help. For a UW class I think that I am pretty satisfied!

Ryan Jerving is a great teacher with a number of really good policies. First he will really improve your writing by forcing you to change your "high school" style to something more sophisticated. He is not easy but if you do the work he helps. He lets you revise papers so it becomes very possible to get an A.

Very humble and easy to talk to. Easy grader too. Your grade is based on 4 projects, 2 of those projects are group work, which is great if you have a good group (lucky me) and the other 2 are solo papers. Always have the chance for revision after reading the paper to him, and I missed about 5 classes and got a B+, so attendence isn't a big deal.

Great professor. Very interested in what he teaches and really cares about his students. Very helpfull and availiable for help. Offers chance for revisions. Classes are interesting, lots of discussion.

Jerving's a regular guy, I took his Higher Education and I really enjoyed it. Not much note taking needed, and he really allows for discussion in the class. Great guy as well, on one day's notice marked up a Cover Letter I did and made it much better. Most interesting class I took first Semester, reccomended.

The class is more about problem construction than actual writing. Half of the class is group work and 50% of your grade, so make sure people in your group will really do work. His grading can be annoying. You have to meet with him outside of class to read him your paper, after which he immediately gives you a grade.

Took his class, spring semester, freshman year and it was somewhat boring. The website and the group projects were alot of work but he is a lenient grader. He is extremely helpful and helped me improve my writing alot! all in all, great professor!

He's incredibly boring and doesn't know what he's talking about half of the time. If you actually want to learn how to write well, take another professor. That, and the essay topics suck.

Best class I took first semester - hands down. If you're at all interested in the subject material I highly recommend his class. Lots of discussion etc.

Professor Jerving is very helpful and makes the subject matter intesting. He is fair and doesn't play favorites. A good UW to take!

Jerving is awesome. He will meet with you anytime or talk through email to help you out. Grading is pretty lenient although it takes a lot of work to get your stuff together. If you are interested in law a little, take the course.

really good teacher overall, knows his****, easy grader if you put in the effort he demands (which isnt that much). i wasnt interested in the class at first but by the end i was glad i took it.

This class is not for you if you don't like IP. I got lucky and ended up enjoying the class. FOr the final project you can research anything. Overall a good teacher, class time very longggg.
