If you're not already good at theory, I don't know that Forsberg will get you there. But working with him was amazing for me; I learned more than with any other teacher at St. Olaf (barring Alice Hanson).

Forsberg was probably amazing 40 years ago. He's completely lost his ability to teach because he's so inflexible. He hasn't even bothered to update his curriculum, which will leave you unprepared for future Theory classes. Easily frustrated and an unfair grader. He's retired 3 times already but they keep calling him back. Hopefully they'll stop.

He's really nice and fun to have, but gets frustrated easily when people can't quickly understand, and grades pretty hard.

Forsberg is amazing! But he doesn't come across that way to anyone who struggles with music theory. He really only knows 1 way to explain something, so if you don't get it, ask one of the other teachers. His other flaw is that he made up his own textbook but hasn't bothered to write it down. So the textbook isn't very useful. Overall, a fun class.

Professor Forsberg's enthusiasm made first-year theory much more bearable. He has high expectations, but he's a very fair grader, and he's sensitive to the needs of his students, though he sometimes has trouble coming down to the level of those who are struggling. It's really a shame that he's retiring next year. We'll miss you, Chuck!

I had him for Theory Composition 31 years ago. He was fantastic - knowledgeable, helpful, encouraging. Can't say enough good things about him.

You will hate this class, it can almost be guaranteed. Forsberg is unclear, unhelpful, unbending, unrealistic, and mentioned both last year and next year in class today instead of working with us. Tell him if you don't understand something--it's kind of funny to see him get worked up when you don't get it immediately.

"It'sh sho eashzy!" Yeah, for genuises like you, Chucky. After watching you do it, I sure am smarter! *sarcasm* I can shee the shonorities! And I can play the piano in mid air! Gotta love Chucky Cheasy. It's not sho eashzy.

I think he has improved since last year, from the sounds of it. I'm learning. Be sure to stay on top of it, he gives quizzes every week. He doesn't understand that not everyone understands theory as quickly as he does. He also isn't very clear with helping on compositions one on one.
Theory III
Wow...possibly my worst class experience at St. Olaf. He is so damn smart and doesn't understand how people could possibly be below him in intelligence. A good teacher can teach the same subject in many ways. Frickin A...he drove me crazy!
Theory IV
For our 2 hour final, Forsberg gave us NINE pages of analysis--no one finished it. He said for the next year he'd make it shorter. Cool Forsberg. I have also tutored people in Forsbergs class and they have all also expressed frustration at his teaching.
Theory IV
AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. He might know what he's talking about, but he's the pickiest grader ever. He will dock you many points if you miss just one note, even if you know what you're doing, and if you are normally an A student, count on getting a C.
Theory 3
Totally incomprehensible. He's very smart, but he REALLY wants you to know that he is smart. So he tells you how smart he is. Over and over. He has no idea how to relat to people that are not musical geniuses. Avoid him for theory.
theory
He's tought, but it's just because he is soooo smart, he really knows his stuff, finishing his class you will know thory. . .or do very poorly, but only if you don't care
Theory IV
Ummm yeah, in response to the last comment, I'd never struggled with Theory until Forsberg's class, so I don't think that's fair to say. I think he's just a really tough prof, in general.
Theory IV
I really liked Forsberg. He knew what he was talking about, was clear and made class interesting. He was by far my favorite theory prof. I think some people just struggle with music theory so they blame the professor.
