This class is really hard! I think every teacher needs to take this course, but maybe with a different professor. She needs to start using rubrics! Rubrics are not just for grades, they are there to be helpful guidelines. Her objectives are vague, and leaves students confused as to what she wants.

This teacher totally prepares student teachers for realities that will be faced in classes. We learn how whiteness is viewed from many nonwhite perspectives. Truth can be painful; but it will help when teaching Great Professor, socratic method.

I know not everyone liked her, but she influenced me more than any other teacher I've had. Her class and my student-teaching and coaching experiences transformed me into a social activist first, teacher second. I know I have made a life-long difference on several of my students and athletes, and that would never have happened if not for Roberta.

Dr. Ahlquist knows her stuff. If you felt uneasy in her class, her mission was accomplished. She can only take you as far on this topic as you are willing to go, but she professionally pushes everyone to get out of their comfort zone. I think we need her, or someone like her, to keep us honest.

Classroom is NOT a safe space--be forewarned coming in. Painful to sit through class even if you AGREE with her; she'll talk right over you and ignore points if you disagree. Consistently misquotes and misrepresents facts in classrooms--a pity, because she knows her stuff, and cares about her subject greatly. Did far more harm than good.

Awful professor. She looks down on minorities as always needing help who are unable to "escape" from their poverty stricken world because of white prejudice. That's the sum of what she teaches you for the entire class.

This classroom lacks diverse viewpoints. Any expression of a point of view that differs from Prof. Ahlquist's is actively discouraged. Since it is a course on multiculturalism, I had expected to hear a broad spectrum of opinions. Grades are based on what she thinks you deserve which depends on the degree to which you agree with her.

Often came to class completely unprepared.Killed time with meaningless "class discussions" that had nothing to do with education.Assignments were deliberately vague, which allowed her to criticize your work in any way she pleased.Skillfully evades questions by answering a question with a question.Uses class to spread her personal political beliefs.

She's a gem. Too many students are only interested in a grade. Take the content seriously and you'll learn a lot.

Outstanding curriculum;very relevant to teaching - have used ideas from her class every day in my teaching. Supportive, understanding, totally clear eyed and courageous; 100% for the kids. Makes you question your complacent suppositions; makes you see what is really out there. She's the Best.

Passionate, but horribly disorganized; syllabus incomprehensible. Claims to want open discussion, but is totally dismissive of anybody who disagrees with or questions her. Much of what she teaches is terribly important, and she does a pretty good job. But there's also a lot of junk: e.g. capitalism as the root of all evil. Avoid if possible.

I was a little worried when I found out I had to be in her class because of all the previous ratings. I think she must have changed since some of the previous posts. She did tend to be unorganized, however, the readings were interesting and she was open to other viewpoints. The class is a lot of work, but you will learn lots on multicultural ed.

Roberta is a wonderful professor. This is the most interesting class I have ever taken. She is quite liberal, but an unflagging ally to students of color and lower socio-economic background. I loved this class!

I am commenting on Multiculturalism for the SJSU teaching credential. More than anything, I wanted to like this class because of my background. Unfortunately Dr. Ahlquist was so close-minded it turned me off of the class. It seemed like she wasn't interested in open debate and shut off discussions when students disagreed with her viewpoint.
