Be prepared to do work. Professor O'Brien clearly knows his history, but there is a lot of information. Make sure you read the text sources and cite them in your essays. (You have three in-class exams: 10 paragraph-long identifications and 1-2 essays.) He offers help, but I felt he was too intimidating to approach.

Took 2 classes with him in the 80s. He is the reason I changed major and studied history (and then economics -- but that's another story). To me he represents what's best in teaching. Thank you Professor O'Brien... Haris Daskalothanassis

His lecture is very interesting and you can do most of the work without reading if you attend class regularly. However, is test was SOO MUCH information and the 20 page paper at the end was slightly overwhelming. Good class, great professor, but GLAD ITS OVER!

Was interesting hearing him read, however, there was no give and take just him talking which I feel does not give him a chance to know the student. I am unsure if final paper was read or test marked. It seemed that final grade depended on 5 min. class presentation. If you are not a good speaker, you will not do well.

one of the smartest people i have ever met. his church in the middle ages class is extremely interesting and all he will do is lecture. alexander the great is a little bit more intense. you better have done the readings before class because he takes it seriously, but deffinately worth taking. one of the top alexander historians in the country

Best professor ever. I love professor OBrien and would take him again anytime. He is very enthusiastic about the subject and that only attracts students to actually attend his class. He's very knowledgeable and communicates effectively. He makes the class fun and always points out interesting facts that leave you wondering even after class is over.

Probably the best teacher in the department I learned alot in his Church in the Middle Ages class. Makes it interesting and he is funny. It's almost entirely lecture, with a few questions for the class, but very little class discussion. There are presentations at the end of class by every student. I can't wait to take Alexander the Great with him

This is the best professor! He is clear, interesting, knowledgeable, simply awesome! Take any of his grad classes, you will not regret it:that's if you really want to learn. If you're lazy, then take someone else. O'Brien should be running for some public office! O'Brien for President!

Very good class, a great prof. unfair on grading, expects a lot of writing on test, 10 i.d. and two essays, a couple of papers for summer, a bit too much. No review.

He is sooooo boring. I am an avid history major and he is the most boring professor i have ever taken. He requires reading from his books that he doesnt go over in class and expects you to cite them on his tests. He requires 3 tests including the final. Do not take!!

Nice teacher who loves what he is teaching, but very boring subject. 3 tests made up of 10 identifies and 1 or 2 essays. You'll do well as long as you know the material and include information from the source book. Good Luck.

Great Prof! He is very clear about what's on the tests. Midterm and final only. Idents/essays. He is also very funny and really nice. Just make sure you include stuff from the source material. The films he shows are pretty good too.

Am I glad I took this class! You put in a bit of work-> you do well, its as simple as that. He tells you what to do for the tests, and begs you to follow his outlines. Follow them and you will be rewarded. Bit of memorization & spitback, but he's an easy & fair marker. Notes are the key, and use the sourcebook when he tells you to. Entertaining!
