Doctor Hyer has a thorough knowledge of East Asian international relations and his lectures are interesting. Unfortunately, he offers far too much information diluting the sense of what aspects are important. He has very little sense of proportion and assigns enormous amounts of reading to quiz you on without indicating what should be studied.

Class was easy. Two book summaries, two tests, and a 10 page paper make up the grade. I never once touched the books (except for the ones you have to do summaries for). If you show up to class, take good notes, and study those notes the class is a cake walk. Professor Hyer is also very helpful and his lectures are clear and very informative.

Nice guy, liked the lectures (although he goes off on tangents). Take good notes and the tests aren't too bad. He is very helpful!

Takes the time to help out students. Tests were essay format, and a little nitpicky. The format of the class is a little odd. He spent two weeks on suicide bombing which, for a class on international conflict, seemed a little much. You don't really learn a lot in his class. He could have taught everything we learned that semester in one class.

He is left leaning but it's definitely a fresh perspective at BYU. His tests are papers. There is a lot of reading in the class but you don't have to do any reserach. He also has a good sense of humor.

Very easy; drop good notes and study your notes well; if you do so, you will get an A- at least.

He is an amazing teacher, and willing to help anytime through email, or face to face. for a 400 level it is adequate reading with commonsense homework. He tries to keep the 2 1/2 hr. down, and interesting so we dont fall asleep. Few papers, capstone paper and presentation. Also class participation- do it, its easy, and helps with your grade!

Dr. Hyer is a great teacher and a very knowlegable man. Sometimes he goes off on tangents, but it's cool. The tests are very fair! Overall, a very good class.

It is an interesting class. The teacher is nice and helpful. Just expect a very far left viewpoint. He'll be telling you the New York Times is "Mainstream America" and we are too obsessed about voting. He puts a rosy picture on communism and the book used has almost nothing good to say about the USA and the videos don't balance the extremism.

Chinese Foreign Policy: Hyer really knows his stuff, perhaps too well, because lectures are oftentimes hard to follow if you haven't already studied in the field. If you can stay awake and pay attention, you will learn a lot of good information. Tests are tough. Papers are graded more easily.

SUPER nice guy. If you want a professor that will help you if you are having trouble, it's him. His class is pretty dry, but it's better than those crazy hard theory classes. Only 2 papers and 2 finals so it's not a huge workload. It's better than any other 300 level theory class.
