BIO 102
I have the final on tuesday and i lost hope, decided to give her a grade before she graded me
Bio 102
I would not recommend this class to anyone. This is the worst class I have ever taken. Terrible grading system and testing method. This class is designed to fail students. I wish I had listened to other people and not taken this class at Hunter.
Biol 102
Dr. Alaie is an amazing lecturer. I love going to class and don't even notice the time. However, like what everybody here says, the MC text is VERY challenging. Go to lecture. Go to recitation. Read the textbook like its the Bible. Review your notes. And if possible make a rap song about the material so you'll remember it. Lol.
BIOL100
She is a very nice person but alas her exams are bone breaking heart crunching, but if you are up for a challenge I will recommend this class! Its very easily possible to get even an A+, but the amount of work that you would need to put in would probably get you two A+s in other classes.......
BIO100
She is a very nice woman; however, her multiple choice is way too difficult. You can pass in all aspects of the class and still receive a pitiful grade just because of her multiple choice. In addition she makes the multiple choice count as so much of the grade that you can know the material but still barely pass the class. I'd stay away.
bio100
I received a B and though i was not satisfied, i know that if i had worked harder i would have got an A. Exams are extremely hard, hardest I've taken. essay grading isn't really fair. spent hours everyday for the class and still got a B
Bio100
Best prof at Hunter. Fascinating lectures, great sense of humor, very helpful and kind. Treats students like adults and really knows how to teach. You will learn a ton, but you have to work hard. Don't fool yourself that you can skim the text and know what you are talking about. You need to be able to explain the concepts.
Bio051
One of the most challenging, but also most interesting classes I ever took. She is an amazing lecturer - engaging, ethusiastic and funny. The key to success in this class (I got an A) is to ORGANIZE what you know in such form that allows you to write a scientific essay. Those essay grades are essential, so focus on them. Good luck!
Bio100
I am fascinated by Dr. Alaie. I find it incredibly hard to teach such a huge class, and sincerely believe she is trying to do her best. The class is hard... I was studying as hard as I could, still doing slightly better than Failing!!! Exams are impossible! Well, I guess MCAT is worse anyway! Good luck!
Bio100
Horrible Professor. Her exams do not test only biology, they test logic as well. She would fail her own exams. She enjoys failing students which I'm sure is a result of someone screwing her over in life. Don't listen to her saying if u fail this class choose a diff career. GPA is what is important so take this class elsewhere.
Bio100
Worst class. The class material is not difficult. However, testing conditions make it impossible for students to do well, as there is not enough time to complete multiple choice and essays. Tests are skewed and designed to trick students. This class is the opposite of learning - it's torture.
BIO100
I enjoyed the material covered, but I didn't find Prof. Alaie's teaching very helpful to my understanding and retention of the material, or for test prep. I did the reading, went to every lecture, studied my ass off, used tutoring, and was often explaining concepts to other students, but got only a B. I don't know what more I could've done!
BIOL100
Look around you if you're in the class. 200 of the people you're looking at are no credits. They are the same people who don't put their names or codes on tests and then all the grades get delayed. Top of the hat to those people; enjoy your F averages and good riddance for second semester. Hopefully there aren't any delays next semester...
BIo100
Her tests are super hard. But she genuinely wants you to do well you just have to work for it.She is a really nice person!
BIo100
Her tests are super hard. But she genuinely wants you to do well you just have to work for it.
Biol100
The question is do you go to get a grade or to learn. I am not all that confident about my grade, but Dr. Alaie taught me a great deal this semester. McGregor is an exceptional teacher, but Alaie is an Ivy League quality lecturer at a CUNY price. Ivy League students would know how to succeed in her course and be happy she was so good.
Bio100
Take advantage of the TAs and office hours, study on your own and research questions similar to hers. It helps a ton. Do not be a butt kisser, be humble and stay true to your character and do not let your slack behind. DO NOT take another science or math class with this, it will screw you up. So be careful. Her exams are difficult.
Bio100
She is not interested in teaching. She clearly knows the information very well, and can retell it back perfectly, but the rest you are on your own. You have no practice, and TAs are sometimes AWOL. This semester was horrible. You can't take your exams home. The test isnt even on biology. It just tests your logic. Upsetting.
Bio100
I cant help but wonder that when she sits down to make her tests, she gets some sort of smug satisfaction knowing she is screwing over many students. She purposely creates confusing test?'s. Tests dont reflect notes or general facts but rather the most ridiculous specific's Look at the avg grade for 800+ people. What does that say about the teacher?
BIO100
This course reuquires total dedication. Alaie is a great person, and very funny, but horrible test maker. Questions seem to test on logic rather than BIO. This class having 600 + people makes it impossible to learn. Place Alaie in a smaller classroom would make the class PASSABLE. If you want to fill just a GER go somewhere else.
BIO100
Dr. Alaie is an OUTSTANDING professor. Her class is not easy at all, you actually have to put in the time and effort if you want to pass. She is one of the BEST professors at Hunter! Her tests are difficult, however they are ok if you study an adequate amount.
Bio100
Dr. Alaie is a PHENOMENAL professor! Yes her class her hard. She's doing her job in prepping future medical professionals, teachers, etc from the start. Be prepared to work hard. If you don't want to work and think you deserve to get into med school just because you want to then just find another career now.
bio100
I want to start off by saying that she seems like a funny person with a lot of passion for her field. She is able to clearly explain concepts. HOWEVER , and this is a big however she makes her test painstakingly confusing. The tests are not only on bio but on logic. If her tests were only on bio I would have aced them hands down.New Prof needed.
Bio100
To pass, don't apply your knowledge of biology but rather apply your intelligence to decipher her logical reasoning.A.)X+Y=B b.)Y-X=B C.)A+B=Y D.)All of the above except,C.E.)Did you take Valium before the exam? We can automatically, cancel E;a)and b)can be facts but D might be more of a "correct" answer than either of them.D tests more knowledge.
BIO100
Awesome professor!! Show her you care about the class and study hard!! Not easy, but all worth it in the end, I guess. Don't take this class if it isn't your major.
Bio100
She jumps around topics WAY to much and doesn't seem to have a systematic and well thought out lesson plan. This class is biology but it should really be biochemistry because that's all we ever talk about. I've only heard bad things about the easiness of her class and although I do like a challenge, this class is way beyond that.
BIOL100
Attendance is not officially mandatory, but if you want to pass the class it is. She's extremely passionate about what the subject. The material is dense and takes a really long time to digest - but she is always ready to help with questions via email or office hours. This class isn't easy but she is a great teacher. I got a lot out of this class.
BIOAaBb
This professor likes to formulate her exam questions somewhat similar to "Have you stop drinking brandy in the morning?" I wish there is a way to pass this class by just writing essays! On a bright side she is very passionate about her subject. She also need to be more systematic and not jump to translation without talking about proteins.
bio100
I went back to school as a post-bac on my way to Optometry school. I have to say looking back now, I am very grateful to Dr. Alaie. She will prepare you and she will do it well. Is the class challenging? Absolutely! I studied every day, attended all recitations and read every assigned chapter in the book. Work hard! You will do well.
BIOL100
My advice is that if you are not prepared to work HARD in college then maybe you should consider another career path. This class is challenging but getting a good grade is possible if you put in at least 12+ hrs of study outside class time/ week. Use the text book's online resources, they are great! Get help often and early if you are struggling
BIOL102
I had her last year, and got an A+ in 100 and 102. The secret: 1) go to recitations. you'll learn a ton, and they are the people grading your essays. 2) write your essays with ridiculous detail. 3) study enough to know the ridiculous detail. Overall: She's one of the best at Hunter, if not THE best. Enjoy :)
Bio102
Challenging class, but reasonable if you're willing to work. I paid alot of money for private tutoring and spent about 10 to 15 hours a week studying for this class and came out with a B+(which I'm proud of)considering the nature of her tests. She's definitely increased my interest in biology, I learned a great deal in this course.
BIOL100
Two things, if you're here for a GER requirement. Get out. She will make sure that Biology becomes your entire world. And for just GER, it's just not worth it. Second thing? I had fun. Desperately trying to memorize her lecture notes-although painful- was actually one of the more fulfilling challenges I have completed with my biochem major. ^__^
Biol100
Not a bad lecturer but her exams are horrificly difficult. It was impossible to try to decipher what she was asking you. In order to receive a passing grade, you must make Biology your life.
BIO102
With this course, I went from hating biology to not being able to get enough of it! She is passionate about the subject & articulate, & I actually looked forward to lecture. A caveat, however: You must remain diligent in your studies (this cannot be stressed enough!). Study her notes AND the text; take advantage of recitation/office hours/Socrates.
BIO102
Dr. Alaie is an extremely challenging professor. I normally sail through science classes, yet found myself working my butt off for a B+. That being said, I think she is one of the best professors I have ever had. I've learned a lot from this class that will help me beyond the scope of biological sciences. This class is not for the lazy.
Bio102
She's one of the best professors I've ever had. Her exams are very challenging, but the key is to use her class notes as outlines and learn as much as possible on the covered material. Students really need to push themselves in this class, but she is very helpful in answering questions in office hours.
BIO100
Difficulty aside, Dr.Alaie is rude, condescending and egotistical. She seems to have no interest in the success of her students (other than a chosen few postgrads). She MUST be reminded she is teaching a 100 level class. Worse yet, the administrative management is nonexistent at best and malicious at its worst - I'm looking at you Sam Gelman.
BIOL102
Well i would say that the exams are really hard even if you memorize all her notes, it's still hard to understand during exam what is she exactly asking. Besides, she must give atleast some review questions before each exam or should ask students to keep up thier work in journals...that's the only best way to do well.
bio100
She's not the worst but she's certainly not the best by any measure. My major complaint about her is that she does not prepare students for her exams. Anyone w/a PhD can design test to make most students fail. What a good professor does is equip students w/skills necessary to tackle tough questions. She does not.
BIOL102
Dr. Alaie is the best professor EVER!!! Her exams are supper hard and her lecture is graduate-level. She is not only nice, but a super smart professor who is extremely passionate about Bio and who cares about her students. All of you who are complaining about her is because you guys suck at school and blame it at her! Go study to do well!!!
Biol100
Great professor, probably the best at Hunter. As a med student who was a former student of Alaie I'll say this: if you think this class is hard you will not make it through med school, so change yourself or change your plans.
bio101
If she's apply her own grading standards to the way she teaches she'd get an F. Average in terms of teaching:horrible handwriting, writes on an antiquated machine&all you do is try to decode what she's written and catch up. Exams are based on her illogical logic & what grade you get is solely dependent on how well you learn to decode it.She sucks.
Bio100
Evil, just pure evil. I can not say more than that. Don't believe me? Then take her class, I dare you.
bio100
she jumps and skips really hard to follow plays around w/students and laughs by herself at her jokes.she says you guys have no other option but to take her. doesn't put the lecture note on the BB. so students are forced to come to class.seems helpful but sometimes rude. mad crazy for bio. expects u already know bio at gives graduated level bio exam
Bio100
She does a very poor job of preparing you for her exams. Her exams don't test your knowledge of biology, but how well you understand her logic. Despite being extremely condescending and at times rude, she might seem nice -- but don't fall into it, cause once you get your grade "nice" won't be on your mind.
BIO100
Do not take this class!!!!Be on the safe side!!!! YOU WILL REGRET AT THE END IF YOU WILL TAKE IT
BIO100
Her exams are very difficult, and I know because I did poorly on the first one, but I aced the final. Instead of studying like crazy, I tried to understand how she tests. You can't just study, you need to consider how you study. It'll only be impossible if you say it will be. Don't worry about your grade, just learn the material and ask for help.
BIOL100
She is hard but you can play it smart. On her first 2 tests dont even look at the multiple choice until you do the essays. And write the essays so that you cover all your bases but do NOT veer off topic. Be specific. If you have time look/try the multiple choice. Make sure to attend the test review and remember you NEED to study for the final.
BIOL100
I worked very hard in this class. Read all the chapters, went to each lab and each lecture. You can worship the text like its your Bible and it will not help you in this class. Alaie is very nice very pretty, but teaches at a PhD level. Most of the material is incomprehensible. Do not take this class unless you want to bring down your GPA.
BIOL100
This class is not as hard as everyone says it is. Alaie clearly loves her field and she's probably one of the more entertaining professors at Hunter. Don't worry about the MC exams, just focus on the essays and get as many points from lab as possible; they add up. Go for tutoring if needed because you MUST ace the final. Do not lose hope!
BIOL100
I got an A, only because I'm a genius. The only thing worst than her lecture is her handwriting. I understand the class is supposed to be hard, but these are things we shouldn't have to worry about. AND maybe we could have covered more material if she stopped her dumb jokes, honestly, I hate that class so much.
BIOL100
Hard Course. I Got a B, but I worked with the material daily, went to all the RC's. Made friends with anyone that mattered. I couldn't imagine someone doing well in the course while holding a full time job. Test are a blend of GRE verbal and Mcat Biology. Good Luck. I'm Glad i'm done!
BIO100
Now that i have recieved my grade i can safely say i made the video on youtube. However i truly believe that this class is doable. Hunter has like a million premeds that think they're gods at biology, Alaie brings their ego level down. honestly she tests your mental stamina and i respect her for that i guess.
BIO100
This course is hard. But I don't have any negative feeling towards Pr. Alaie. She teaches with passion and you could see it. Her sense of humor is a little sarcastic but I liked it. I don't know yet what grade I've got, but I know that some knowledge from bio course left in my brain. Also I'm not a native English speaker so you could imagine how wa
BIOL100
thanks for correcting my spelling mistake. well after i took the final i can't even spell my name properly... how am i gonna spell cur..b(v)... tell me. i hope dr. alai will read this and may develop some kindness. i can't sleep w/o knowing the score.
BIOL100
If she ever has a heart of gold, she would curve the grades for the whole class. But I don't think that will happen.
bio100
wow, some of these comments are just crazy to me. yeah, her multiple choice questions are tough, but with all the other ways to get points, its not that hard to do well, if you put some effort into it. helps if you are a smart person. not the kind of class where you can excel simply by putting in crazy hours of studying. must be intellligent too
BIOL100
take 2 philo, 2 chem 2 english classes before taking her class.B/C this class requires a lot of thinking (like u r a philosopher), requires u need to understand her textbook language & her language( u must be freaking fluent in english) u need chemistry b/c 1st couple of chapters are chemistry. GOES into TOOOOO freaking deep like medical school
BIOL100
i dunno why she does this to students. she teaches the same stuff as the medical scools as i was looking at the University of pensilvania but she forgets that we are not in a medical scool.she said her students do good on MCAT & medical school but how the heck students will go to medical school if she ruins studets life. 672 students in one class..
BIO100
Heard about her final exam questions! Got a tutor for the semester and thought I was ready for it until personally sat down and started answering final. Was my brain shutting down or I just couldn't understand WHAT she was asking for... Good bye, my perfect GPA! Hello BIO 102!
BIOL100
Although her style of teaching is difficult, it is beneficial in that it makes you study harder for the material. DESPITE THIS, she still refuses to grade the class on the curve. Dr Alaie, if you INSIST on purposely confusing your students on the exams, at least have the decency to put them on a curve. Congrats on ruining my chances for med school.
bio100
Lecture is entertaining and informative but lab's a waste of time. Exam language is ambiguous, testing reading compensation rather then knowledge. As a result, course is extremely unpleasant(even if you like sciences)and conditions a strong disliking for biological sciences. Bio is fun! Don't let Dr. Alaie ruin it for you--take the class elsewhere!
BIOL100
Never have I worked so hard for such minimal grades. I studed in the library 3 to 4 hours a day just to get hammered on the final. She makes you believe you can get a good grade in the class, however the final will strip your pride faster than britneys spears strips after 4 drinks. I refuse to take biology 102 and endure more of this punishment.
BIOL100
The only reason she is making it hard is that she wants to make sure that certain people don't make it in pre-med. If she thinks that making hard exams would give her reputation, then she is just standing in the wrong stage. It's time that Hunter gets a new prof, one that knows how to be fair, and not treat others like idiots.
bio100
Don't you people realize that studying isn't everything and at other schools people come out with premed scores that are great and never had to endure this. BTW Dr. A insulted everyone in her class by saying "what kind of school do you think this is..." then she stopped obviously cause she thinks that her schooling is better than the one we can get
BIO100
Dr. Alaie can be described as which of the following: (A)A cruel professor that screws people over on exams, not by what they learned, but by playing with words. (B) A psychotic instructor who's goal is to lessen the pre-med community. (C) I shouldn't have watched Jersey Shore last night --> DON'T CHOOSE!
Bio100
Words cannot describe her, she is beyond terrible, dont believe anything she or her TA's say. Recitation is useless. Only decent part was lab. I have never studied so much for a class only to do terrible in it. She really just wants your money. I hate her.
bio100
i went to office hours , she was not help at all. Very arrogant and look at you like you are nothing. I've got disrespected.
Biol102
You guys don't realize with 600 students and limited number of upper level Biology seats, BIOL 100/102 is a weeding-out class. She is instructed by the department to make impossible exams to discourage/fail a certain percentage to control the student body better.
Bio100
I wrote a review a couple weeks ago that was not offensive, just honest. I now see that it has been deleted. Luckily, Dr. Alaie and her TAs cannot delete my in class performance review. On the other hand, I'm glad that she comes on here so she can actually see how she is ruining peoples lives. I hope the guilt has some effect on her. Probably not.
Bio100
She likes to give as much info as possible but then in her exams all that material becomes useless. If you can think beyond the scope of her question and simplify ideas you'll do ok, but be ready for the finals - those are known to either destroy the grade (most likely) or elevate the grade (least likely). And practice meditation a lot before exam!
bio100
Some people love that she writes notes in class, but you'll realize at the exam that those notes are a cruel joke: they are useless and not nearly sufficient to answer her exam questions. People say that MCATs are easier than her exams. Of course, people who make MCAT questions know how to write clearly and consicely in English, unlike Dr. Alaie!!!
BIO100
This woman is a disgrace to Biology and a disgrace to college in general...and this is the reason why: I got an A+ in AP Bio back in HS. Thought this class would be similar due to both using the SAME TXTBOOK. Right? WRONG. This woman's exams don't test you on knowledge of Bio, only some idiotic TRICKS. I've never been so appalled at a professor. Fh
bio100
horrible. had to withdraw!! do not take unless you really know your stuff or are really dedicated
Bio100
Well, I did pretty good during semester and then the final exam killed me - my GPA dropped even though I got B+ overall grade. As an international student I thought I'd fail the class, but i did not and very proud that I got B+, but even for English majors the exam question "twisting" is the most tricky thing!
bio100
Not only pre-meds are taking this class!!!! She makes everything a lot harder than it actually is!!! If you are not a pre-med and want to take Bio take it in another college, it will make your life a lot easier! Hate her with all my heart!
bio100
I took this class twice at Hunter, first time got an F second time got a D. I studied like crazy, I know the book and lecture notes inside and out..I can probably teach a bio class. Still did horrible on the exams. Exams are ridiculous. Do NOT take this class its impossible. Dr. Alaie would probably even fail one of her own exams...
Bio100
Okay so she is simply wonderful, she is an angel at explaining everything and breaking it down. The only problem, is the exam! Its very difficult to sometimes understand the questions because they are not straightforward. I wish there was another professor teaching Bio!!! Anyone would be better than her.
BIOL100
very very very hard exams. Very misleading and unfair. This is an intro class not BIO 9000. She tests you on mutiple concepts in one question. hour and 15 mins to complete an essay and 30 multiple choice. each question takes about 3 mins to decipher and another 3 mins to convince yourself of the right answer!
BIO100
Just a FYI for all those who think it is unfair, this class preps you for medical school more than any other. I am a 2nd year student, and have found school far more easy because I was well trained before getting there. So, open a textbook and study instead of write stupid comments about how unfair your life is for having to take difficult exams.
BIOL100
she should get Noble for making the hardest exam on the earth or may be she should be in the Gines book of world record
biol100
the nice comments saying for people to cheer up, its almost as if Alaie herself actually wrote them here... she constantly checks this site, im sure she manipulates these reviews. i hate her. she expects me to answer as if im a PhD in Bio in an intro class...
AABB
She needs to post LECTURES online-this is why a lot of poeple fail the class, beleive me!!! We DO NOT HAVE POSTED LECTURES!!!!
BIO100
Most of the comments are fair. Fun, clear classes. Absolutely misleading when you take your exams. Convoluted. Wordy. Not enough time to review exam. Multiple choice + essays in 1h15min. You answer. That's it. You can't realistically review it. I want to know the % of people passing the exams. If a certain % fails, the exam or prof is flawed.
BIO100
Come on, people! She's giving you all the info, in higher Bio courses you'll see how difficult to get through without well written lectures the way she writes FOR YOU EVERY LECTURE! I was scared of her exams but then later it became a fun game to play! Cheer up, people, life is not going to hand you everything! Work for it! Dr. Alaie, miss you!
bio100
i would say everything i think about her, but i don't think the comment will be aproved since every word would be a curse. HATE HER. I almost threw up on the exam and wish still had timeto drop the class
bio100
If your GPA is of any importance to you,do not take this professor. All her test questions are so misleading and convoluted that you may even study and know your stuff and still get them wrong. The lab is fun. The exams are horrible. She doesn't test your knowledge, she tests to see if you are a sucker that will get tricked by her twisted questions
bio100
she likes to make jokes, and she checks this website to see what comments people have made about her. overall, she is great at explaining and making sure that you understand but her exam questions are very difficult. 1 multiple choice question tests you on 3 or 4 concepts
bio100
She is a good prof, her lecture are fun and interesting, but be ready to dedicate your life to this class because her exams are suuuuuuupppppeeeerrrr hard. Her questions are very tricky, its like every option for an answer sounds right. isn't for you!!
bio100
She is a good prof, her lecture are fun and interesting, but be ready to dedicate your life to this class because her exams are suuuuuuupppppeeeerrrr hard. Her questions are very tricky, its like every opyon for an answer sounds right. If you really want to pass, just study your but off and make sure your other classes are easy. And if you are the l
Bio100
She simply lights up that stage with just her ever so fashionable presence. I personally got a C on both semesters which dragged my GPA down like crazy. But I don't regret it, she was an enlightening experience to have, she shed light on how hard Bio really is and how hard one should prep for it. Basically if you don't do well then Bio ain't 4 U.
bio102
Dr. Alaie is the best teacher you will ever have. She will teach you a lot about biology and make it very interesting at the same time. Her tests are hard but tests are supposed to be hard, you will love this class. Perfect for pre med and biology students.
BIO102
I usually stay away from saying anything, but now I just couldn't help it. A lot of people are ranting about how hard she is and how it is unfair for freshmen to have such a hard class. C'mon, people! IMHO, most bio classes are way too easy, and this one is JUST RIGHT. Wanna go to life sciences? Shut up and bear it! or change your major to dancing.
Bio100
can students do something, like a petition to kick her out of hunter. let other college have her.
Bio102
she is something else. lectures are pretty much useless except for the few minor details that she mentions which end up being a big portion of the exams, which are unbelievably difficult. biology concepts arent hard to grasp, but the way she words her questions make even the simple topics beyond hard. its more understanding her than knowing bio
Bio102
Way too hard for a first year premed bio class. She forgets that this is an intro class. It was difficult, her tests were misleading and incomprehensible, and the labs did not have any structure in terms of matching up with the class material. The professor would make a better researcher than instructor.
BIO102
Wow! Dr. Alaie had some bad reviews in the past 3 months and most of those were taken out! What is the point of having this site then if people's opinions are modified to sound sweeter than actual truth? I have nothing against this professor, had a great time studying and all, but honesty of other students should be available for future students.
BIO150
Her exams are unbelievably hard. This was my only class and I studied all day and all night. I knew the material inside and out, but her exams are impossible. You have to know material that she teaches and material she doesn't teach in class. This class is for graduate bio students. The exams are more philosophical. It is too hard for 1st year bio.
BIO102
I had taken the first semester of bio at another college well known for its top medical school, and Hunter's class was more rigorous. If you are interested in taking the MCAT, this class is for you. But you will WORK. After doing poorly on the first exam, I started going to the Socrates Center and Shannon's recitation, which helped a lot.
Bio100
She is a great personality, but her lectures are overrated. Her reputation forces an individule to study harder, and that is her value. Words cannot describe how hard her exams are. The questions themselves are not hard, in my opinion many questions are too open to interpretation. I found myself spending a lot of the exam trying to read her mind.
Bio102
On one hand, she is a gifted lecturer, interesting and very entertaining. On the other hand, she gives the most demoralizing exams Ive ever taken. I have never studied so hard in my life for a class, put so much effort in, taken something so seriously and received such poor results. Dr. Alaie, please curve the grade. I worked so hard for you.
BIO102
probably one of the few professors at hunter that teaches on a college level. exams are rather difficult so you will have to read the assigned chapters and get at least the basic concepts to pass the course. labs are easy though. grade breakdowns are appx. 50 As, 90 Bs, 120 Cs, 110 Ds, 140 Fs. though i have also heard she bumps up the grades a bit.
bio102
well dr.alaie is a very good professor but her exams are killer. in my opinion this should be only for students that are pre-med. for general bio there should be another section. i love bio love the professor but she really needs to be teaching on level 200. hopefully she curves
BIOL102
Unfortunately, Dr. Alaie's lectures on advanced Biology topics, such as cancer and stem cell research, are quick and dirty. Yet, exams have an almost obsessive focus on complex material that deserved far more time and attention in lecture. She neither tests nor teaches core introductory bio concepts with appropriate emphasis or organization.
BIO102
Dr. Alae is simply the BEST professor I have ever seen at Hunter. She is AWESOME. made a bio geek out of me. Yes, exams are very hard but her lectures are worth it. Hunter should be honored to have her teaching
BIO102
exam questions are too serious for an intro course. but i really like the way she teaches, she's energetic and doesn't teach in monotone. and for the love of god please don't let persell teach your class alaie!
bio100
i had her for both semesters (100&102)and she is the best you can get at hunter. yes she is extremely hard but if you are dreaming about med school, trust me she is your man..uh woman... she prepares you well for MCAT and although you may forget some topics u will for some reason remember the littlest detail of something that means nothing to u =]
Bio102
Wow, what a great professor! Her lectures are fun to listen to (if not mandatory), the labs are educational, and she is really helpful and nice when you approach her. It's easy to get caught up in your (initially low) grades, but once you realize what she's looking for in her exams, it's rather easy to do well. Just listen to her and read the text.
BIO102
I wish every professors was like Dr.Alaie! She's excellent in every way. So much passion and excellent prep for MCAT. Learn while you can and the help is there. Don't slack here your A Game is necessary. Agreed that nobody teaches this way anymore!
BIO120
whoever wants to take her class, for them my advice.. please ask any students who is taking her class, how worst prof she could be. her lecture is hard and in exam she make her own imaginary questions that make no sense at all. she is a....
BIO102
I wouldn't say she's a great lecturer. She's a bit repetitive as she summarizes what she has on the slides in quite lengthy sentences, when she can just give us the slides to copy bullet by bullet. It's a bit wasting of time. Her multiple choice questions are tricky, as there can be two right answers, but you must choose the BEST one. Not as gr
bio102
I agree. Given how many chances she gives us to make up points, even though she is hard we really can't complain. Those who take advantage of the recitations, office hours, etc. really do see a difference in their grade. Dont blame Dr. Alaie!
Biol101
Make Sure you hide all sharp objects in your home the day before the test, because once you get back, you'll want to kill yourself over how hard the mult. choice is. Too hard for an intro class but well worth the effort.
BIOL100
Having come into the course completely terrified, I must say that it's not as bad as it's made out to be. She is a great lecturer and you come out of the class with an understanding of the concepts even without having read the textbook. Felt like failing during the first few months, wound up with an A+. Be honest with yourself about your studying.
BIO100
This is not a class you can expect an A in without putting forth effort. Dr. Alaie has a PhD in immunology and she does not dumb down her material. Her questions are geared towards MCAT type material. If you are pre-med and can't hack her class, maybe it's a warning that needs to be heeded. I'm completely objective as I got a C+ in the class.
bio100
Yes this class is hard and does require a lot of hard work and studying and is not for slackers. However, this class is doable and you can get a resonable grade and a very good grade. She is a very nice person and is always willing to help you out no matter who you are. She explains the material very well and does expect you to know it.givesxtra credi
Bio100
I hated this class, but I think it a bit unfair to label Alaie a "terrible teacher." She is enthusiastic about the material and does her job effectively, at least when it comes to lecture. True, she did ruin bio for me; I loved biology in high school; hated it in college. Taking her tests was excruciatingly painful. However, be fair people.
BIO100
Terrible teacher, extremely poor grades for majority of her students rates her as horribile teacher.
BIO100
I am an A student. However, I wound up with a C+ in this class and I honestly have to say I had it coming. She is a good teacher, so its not her fault. I barely put any effort and I read the text only a few days before each exam. I didn't put in nearly 100%. It's all about the effort. Read and know the text. Whether or not you do it is on YOU.
BIO101
I am smart, but I still failed. This is a hard course. She is engaging, and excited about the material, she provides lots of help in office hours, I would re-take her but I don't think my GPA can cope. I thought that as a reasonably intelligent person I would be ok- but the exams are SO TRICKY...
Bio100
wow, I am sorry, but this seems so rigged; my previous comment got deleted, and apparently many others have as well. This class was truly terrible. The atmosphere was stifling, the material boring, and the teaching uninspiring. The tests made me feel that to die would be better than to take them. AVOID.
Biol100
great teacher! she explains the concepts very well, but the tests are very hard. In order to do well you def have to attend lecture and take down the notes she writes in class. she also gives an extra credit essay and allows your first two multiple choice grades to be dropped if you do better on the final exam.
Bio100
First of all you have to be a genius to get an A in Alaie's class. Thats why I got an A
BIO100
Professor Alaie is an excellent lecturer with a genuine enthusiasm for the subject. Her tests are hard and I had to do more work than I usually do to earn my A. I didn't have to go crazy and review every day, but I did study for tests a week and a half in advance. She gave a 7.5 EC essay(100 scale), and the final letter grade is curved also.
BIO100
I'm not sure about that last post. She definitely does not give individual attention unless you are one of those brownnosing students who waits for her after class. She is a good prof though, but depend on yourself to get a good grade rather than any individual assistance, unless you don't mind kissing some posterior.
BIO100
She is the BEST science professor I have ever had. While she does teach at an MCAT level, she and her TAs will work with you tirelessly to make sure you get the material. Her class is HUGE and yet she manages to give individual attention to every student. The exams test your predictive abilities, and make you think like a biologist. She rocks.
bio100
Wow Half of the comments got deleted. Perhaps Alaie was reading them and didn't like it so therefore she decided to give them for review. Adrienne You are just so ridiculous, you teach well but you do realize that this is BIO 100 not BIO 400... I mean come on, you need to realize that this is not medical school nor is it a graduate course.
Bio100
I like Dr. Alaie's teaching style. She gives good lecture, and writes good notes. The material is interesting an she's funny. However her tests are demoralizing and harder than anything I've ever taken before. I understand the concepts but she makes questions that are insanely hard to grasp. Bummer about the tests.
BIO100
This class is not for everyone, but Dr. A is a truly talented educator. Her lectures are (gasp) interesting.
bio100
oyyy ...her teaching is great but her tests suckk...u literally have to breathe and live bio to do great in the class. btw orgo + bio at hunter = :(
Bio100
She is def a smart woman, however, Im not crazy about her teaching style. She offers a lot of hope, but her tests are a killer. This class is not recommended unless youre pre-med.
BIO100
Dr. Alaie is, w/o question, the best, clearest, most inspiring, dedicated, compassionate, & intelligent professor I've ever encountered. She's an incredible & energetic lecturer w/a great sense of humor, and a caring prof who is dedicated to her students. To succeed: attend lectures, take notes, synthesize course concepts & approach with curiosity.
BIOL100
Dr. Alaie is great. Her class is hard, but fair. Work hard and you will do well. Her lectures are not mandatory, but if you want an A, you must go. Her tests are difficult, but if you study hard, you can get an A. Her labs are also really fun and low-stress.
Bio100
she is the hardest professor ever. she does not give a**** whether you do good or bad in that class, all she cares about is her reputation as a hard professor. the class is so unfair for so many reasons. take the class in another school if u have to.
Bio100
very hard class, as in tests, and u have to read the textbook to get a crispy clear picture of whats going on. she's a very helpful professor and she will make time for you. but this is not an easy class, you have to attend although its not mandatory and its preferable if you GO TO recitation, its for your own good. interesting class, tests are =(
Bio100
I do not understand how this is an actual introductory class taught at Hunter College. I am a smart girl who scored above a 2200 on the SATs, but I just cannot handle this class. Reading, studying, and great critical reading skills do not equal success. The tests are migraine-inducing. So disappointed. Please stay away.
Bio100
Sorry to spoil it for you, but its a very slight curve (bumped up a third of a letter grade). For example, if you manage to get a B-, it gets bumped to a B, etc.
BIO100
She does, my friends all said that their grades were higher than what they actually got in the class but that she doesn't announce what the curve is going to be. One friend said it was like getting an unexpected Christmas gift.
BIO100
I am taking this class out of sequence and it is much easier than orgo! She and Philips will kill your social life but at least you will be prepared for medical school and Alaie is nice to look at. Love your textbook! Live with that thing if you want to get an A.
Bio100
My AP Bio teacher was better. I think her knowledge of biology remains within confinements of the information in the textbook. Her tests are formulated to purposely mess you up even if you know the material. She truly wants to maintain her "hard professor" reputation at the student's cost and she is destroying my dreams of getting into med school.
Bio100
She is a good teacher who wants you to pass, but her tests are hard (not to say more) go to class, study a lot. and you might have a chance in passing.
Bio100
Ineffective teacher. Verbose and convoluted when speaking. Does a poor job of clarifying concepts. Poor choice of words speaking and on exam questions. Constantly feel like you?re missing something because she talks fast, but in the end, you?ve learned nothing beyond what u read in text. Lectures help pinpoint what's on exam, but exams are tricky.
BIo101
i dont know what is more depressing, hearing the really long lecture of doing the tests. This class is not impossible but if you're not really into working for your grade then count yourself dead. There is just no way to get an A if you dont study hard. Also her questions are the most confusing things ever...
bio102
It's a hard class but she makes the stuff interesting. If you are into bio, you can learn a lot of things that are pretty cool, not only boring facts like other professors concentrate on. She makes the class exciting and new. Tests are difficult because you have to really get the material well but there is always someone who can help.
bio102
she is not a good prof.she always want student to fail in her class so that these students will pay again for same class..and money will be double.bio 102 should be a easier class but she makes it hard to earn money
bio102
hey her class's allright and she look good anyway which makes the class mad worthwile to sit in. enjoy
BIOL102
I STUDIED A LOT for my grade and I loved this class a lot. If you want a good grade, STUDY, and GO TO CLASS. Her notes are a major study tool. I never went to her office hours but I went to my TAs and lab TAs a lot for extra help. For 102, you will find you have to spend mad time studying for lab so make sure you have time!
Bio102
She's a waste of time. Alaie has a haughty and greasy personality, and a less than satisfactory teaching skill... and I wish I have never taken her. If you don't get a fair grade in this class for some reason, work hard for the next semesters. There's hope for you in med school. Don't let this woman put you down.
BIO102
This class is very demanding. It requires a lot of studying, not only for the lecture but also for the lab. Warning: If going to take this class be prepared to study hard because the lecture exams are no joke. The lab exams are fair but they also need a lot of study time since all material in the manual is up for grabs. Good luck!
Bio100
if you want to get an A just move into a cave. Don't sleep, eat, or bathe... just read and study bio. Biology is your life, and you will not interact with anything but the book for the semester. You have been warned!!
BIO102
What do you expect? POS school with POS professors. Her class isn't impossible though. Take notes, read the book, and don't merely skim or memorize her notes, but understand how everything relates to each other. Bio's a tough class, but if you're truly determined to do well then you should do fine in her class.
BIOL102
Alaie's PHENOMENAL teacher, especially if u make use of office hrs, & her stellar TA's. She's passionate, funny, and makes Bio fun. Don't be discouraged if u bomb the first exam, they are nasty! But her finals are less tricky, as she really does just want u to learn and love Bio. It's make or break, make u passionate, or break ur spirit. I <3 her!
BIO102
Bio 102 is def tougher than Bio 100. Professor Alaie is a good teacher. here's general advice. For the first two exams, start studying a week before, and focus on her essays. For the final, start two weeks before, and memorize her notes and the textbook.
bio102
Yes bio's hard kids, but hey so is life right? She is a hell-of-a prof and will be missed when part 2's over. And another thing, she's real nice to look at too - so enjoy!
BIO102
I disagree with the ppl who say you have to "suck up" to her after class/at office hours. They aren't "sucking up", but are asking her questions about things they did not understand. There is no secret to success in her class other than hard work. I got an A+ last semester (prob this semester too) and did not stay after class or go to office hours
BIO102
whether she's a good person or not, she is an awesome prof. i'm pretty lazy so i don't think i'll get a good grade. but if u keep with the reading, listen in lectures... it's amazing. also, u might struggle if ur not very fluent in english because she can speak pretty fast. straightforward grading system also extra credits. will miss her a lot!!
Bio102
Maybe I'd like her more if I were one of the 10 students who stay after class to kiss her posterior. She is a good prof, but like the person below me says, she can be pretty phony.
BIO102
Alaie is an awesome lecturer, and you feel like you really get the info in class...but then there are her tests. calling them "tricky" is an understatement. you can know the entire book word for word, and that wont help you answer her questions. her tests are like a reading tests. expect to be confused.
Bio100
A. Dr.A is a happily married (I think). B if she is "head over hills in love with me" than the feeling is mutual. Its hard for me to concentrate on the subject and she makes it easy and interesting. And C. I am not French.
BIO102
Professor Alaie is an amazing lecturer. You will inevitably learn a lot in her class, however she is THE WORST EXAM WRITER! The multiple choice questions are very tricky. Other than that -- labs and essay questions are straight forward. Also, I think she's head over heels in love with Frenchie (I think his name is Arthur)
Bio006
Proffesor Alaie is a wonderful professor. But her mulitple choice is kind of tricky. Essays and lab are preety good. But after having Presilla for three lectures I missed her sooo much. No but She is cool...This class will make you cry, it will give u a headache and "fun" will no longer be a word in your dictionary. Goodluck
bio100
F ...95% possibility...i got a B- ..there goes my 4.0.. her exams use a million double triple quadruple negatives...anything to confuse you. I think she doenst care how much you know bio. she just sits before an exam and thinks "how can i trick the student to think his right answer is wrong" complain to dept. why she is the only prof teaching bio.
bio100
I don't know what to say about this class except that if you don't suck up to her then you won't get a good grade. The questions are unfair. And I don't think its about critical thinking for her exam. Even the MCAT questions aren't as hard as her MC. The Essays and the lab is not bad but when the MC is work 500/1000 pts then how would you do well.
BIO100
Easy A? yeah probably if that is the only class your taking and go to her office hours every wednesday morning to joke around of other students who are having a hard time. But read this book the molecular biology of the cell (it's awesome) compared to the textbook used in class
Biol100
Prof. Alae is very fair and knowledgeable of the subject. I loved taking her class, even though I did not get a grade. I will take the class again, this time for a grade just to learn Biology from her. She's tough and demanding, but you learn so much that it's worth it.
BIO100
The most painful class ever. Though, to her credit, she WILL make you learn (against your will). Most of the questions on her tests are unnecessarily hypothetical, so don't expect to just regurgitate the textbook. And another thing, she can get a bit annoying, especially with that ego.
bio100
Alaie is a GREAT PERSON u will notice that if u go to her office hours and speak to her however.her class is extremley difficult to pass i studied my ass off and still failed her jokes about how peole score low on exams i found quite rude she doenst know how hard alot of people take the class &that your grade doesnt always reflect the effort put in
BIO100
i absolutely hated this class. the tests were ridiculously hard & the lectures were so boring. t only ones who probably did like them were her sycophantic TAs. i have never hated a class as much as i hated this one. for the first time ever, i received a b-. if you value your GPA, do not take this class. you have been forewarned.
Bio100
DONT FALL behind. Make sure to have read the chapters b4 lecture. there are no shortcuts in her class. just dont fall behind especially in last month. do well on Xcred and essays. u cant memorize in her class. Think mechanistically and reason things and ask ureself y this happens and this doesnt. And u shud be fine. Group studying helps too.
bio101
she may have a notorious rep, but she is the most real and helpful professor ever. Compassionate about bio and no bs what she says is what she does, the sleepless nights of studying to get a B+ or A priceless
BIOL100
Alaie is an awesome professor. She gives very interesting lectures and knows what she is saying. You MUST read the textbook and study HARD for her exams. This class is NOT impossible. Do well on the essays and the final and you will do great. Rely on your T.A.s!! THEY HELP A LOT. I had Bethany - she was the best!
Bio100
She is such a bad prof. DO NOT take her!!!!! She is clear and explains but her multiple choice is impossible. T.A.s: JENNY!!!!NO COMMENT....you can tell that she really doesn't care!
Biol100
For those who are complaining they obviously didn't show up to the classes and pay attention to the notes that "SHE HAND WRITES FOR US!" She spoon feeds what she wants you to know, but it seems people still don't understand that. Her tests are not easy, but they are not impossible. If you are pre-med, suck it up and learn to study the right way!
Bio100
I think she gets some kind of sick kick making up those multiple choice questions. What's crazy is that knowing her she probably doesn't repeat the same or similar questions EVER!! even between different semesters, so what was once a simple question about "hydrogen bonds" becomes a question on the meaning of life years later.
BIO100
Worst professor ever would be the understatement of the century. Incredibly difficult and impossible to do well in the class. Worst part is she knows how difficult she is but makes no effort at all to ease up. Instead, she mocks the entire class on how much they have to struggle. If you're not a genius like I am, then you're gonna fail. I got an A+
Bio100
Alright look, what ever is said, she isn't easy. but she gives repeated opportunities to make up for your mistakes. She drops your first two multiple choice exams, and doubles your final!. I'll take that, so..... take two weeks to study your butt off for the final
Bio101
Don't take this course, take it somewhere else. Use CUNY portal to fill out an e-permit to take it at another school. The Bio. dep. does not have any other options only Alaie and that is the problem. Take this course only if you plan to become a physician. Perhaps the prof. pays students to give good remarks on this website, but it's really HARD.
biol100
but, it's not. Dr. Alaie! you should keep focusing on how the rest of students keep following your lecture. She will discourage your hope on bio. her ass is hot anyway.
BIOL100
She is a god in bio, but all i want to her is 'don't over-express herself' hey, Dr. alaie, this lecture is not for your self-satisfaction. Not all good professors become good teachers. She fails to let students follow her lecture. She will deny and be thinking top 30% students are qualified for her lecture, but
BIOL100
STUDY HARD! The textbook is your bible for the class! Her questions are very tricky, often using double negatives and options such as non of the above or all of the above. Although it may seem that you can never score as high as you wanted to on the Multiple Choice, don't give up! Extra credit essay, labs, and essays save you in the end.
bio100
The emotions students feel toward Dr. Alaie range from a total fondness to an intense hatred, or just somewhere in between; depending on the grades they get. But one thing most people can agree on is that very few professors can match Dr. Alaie's enthusiasm for the subject and her talent for teaching.
BIO100
I LOVE THIS CLASS! Someone below me said if you only care about your GPA then dont take this class, taht person is right. I care a lot abt my GPA but after taking this class i jsut dont care, wel i do but even if i dont do well i am quite content because my love for bio had increased even more. She is tough but you have to study!! Dr.Alaie IS GREAT
Bio100
I think she teaches well but it will be a few more days until I know how I did. We'll see. Happy New years!!!
BIO100
The only good thing about this class is Samantha Sheppard-lab instructor. She should one day teach this class... TA-Jenny -the worst TA in history of BIO. The whole class is set up to fail you. Difficult exams and essays graded by Jenny will lower your GPA. Simply studying hard is not enough. You will understand the material and still fail.
BIO100
Don't take it! She is not capable of teaching or explaining enough the material to class in order to pass her tests. A good prof. offers tests which reflect the material covered in class and is able to explain difficult topics- her tests are designed to make even students that study hard for them feel stupid. JENNY, her TA simply bitter -avoid her.
bio100
THe class is tuff, the esA is hard. BUt i do really Enjoy takin her class. And she is maaddddd EZ on the eyez!
BIO100
I have to admit that I'm not doing well in this class. I'm probably going to get a C unless there is a curve, but I really learned a lot in this class. I think if all you care about is your GPA, don't take this class, but if you want to challenge yourself and learn a lot of cool****, take it and prepare to work harder than ever before.
BIO100
She should probably teach some higher level of bio.For INtro class is too much.I have nothing against hard styding, but as a professor she sholud teach us more and make some review sessions.DONT TAKE THE CLASS IT IS NOT WORTH IT
BIO100
It's 2 sided, really. 1-Great prof. if u're going to major in biology/science 2-Extremely tough prof if u're not going to major in science field. Advise freshmens to take chem first and take bio at another cuny, unless u dedicate all ur time into studying while u hv 4 other classes to study & review for.
BIO100
I'll admit, the MC tests require virtually genius level IQ. She does, in fact, require too much of her INTRO to Bio students. She'd probably be happier, and have much happier students, in a med school setting. Having said all that...Everybody else, quit whining. It's undignified at your age.
bio100
She is indeed a good teacher but the tests in multiple choice section are so so so difficult. I even look at the MCAT and think that it's even harder than the MCAT. I have one advice for her: Just because you make your tests extremely difficult doesn't mean that you are an intelligent professor. Keep in mind about it.
BIO100
She turn my passion for bio into a nightmare. She even admitted that she's an unfair professor. Don't take her! She will probably hospitalize you from the amount of work, stress, and anxiety you have to endure to do well in this class. She also treat us like lab rats with her insane MC. Talk about a mad scientist. Bend on destroying your GPA :(
BIO100
I took the class last year and it is tough, but when you do well you feel amazing. Exams are difficult but not impossible. Essay questions were straightforward. Watch out for the MC, had to think about every possible situation...don't get caught by questioning your own knowledge. Answer her challenge, b/c it get no better in orgo...only worse.
BIO100
Dr. Alaie is a great professor. You guys are complaining too much. Sure the work is an overload but she is helping you guys learn more by doing it. Her MCAT like exams are great! what better way to improve intelligently is by taking hard exams in the beginning. See it as a way of preparing for tougher challenges ahead.
Bio100
I agree with the other comment below me. Someone like her should definitely teach at medical school than college. She really did help me learn a lot though with the expecting too much thing, but I sure wish it help me to get a descent fair grade... she should at least make her MC exam doable for other students to receive a fair grade
BIO100
She is very, very intelligent person who knows her stuff, but expect TOO MUCH from intro bio students. Many of her MC are taken from MCAT and her original questions are too tricky. More than half of students are failing and less than 5% are getting As. She's better off teaching at some medical schools than college.
bio100
Did it ever occur to you that our class is so far behind in lecture because of us and not her? From what I hear, the students in our class are some of worst in a while. You deserve to fail if you can't manage to write down and study the notes she writes for us! It's not her fault you're incompetent -there will still be plenty of A's this semester.
BIO100
Really, this class is hard. Yes. Multiple choice is *hard* for Bio. But, what do you expect? Welcome to PreMed!!! Her TAs are competent and fair graders. If you think they're too hard, you're probably just not doing well in the class because of you, not them. I would highly recommend her and any of the TAs (they're all reasonable). Grow up.
BIO100
This class is an absolute nightmare!! Multiple choice exams are too tricky, essays are alright but too much points deductions, depending on your lab professor.. it adds worst to the pain.. I used to love bio with a passion but she killed it with her vagueness. Seriously can't teach at all.
bio100
TAKE THIS COURSE AT ANOTHER COLLEGE...she will make sure to increase you blood pressure...xple choice is worst than Mcats....essays are easy...her TA...jenny is the hardest grader...no matter how much you try...she will try to take points off...not by ones or twos but by 20's and 30's.....BIO LOVERS...this class is your worst nightmare !!!!
Biol100
The best professor at Hunter. She wants to make sure students have a deep understanding of the material instead of just memorizing facts. As far a the mc questions go, read each one carefully and after picking an answer read the question & the answer again & see if it makes sense. Also, review the questions you get wrong...it will get better:)
BIO100
Seriously needs to be replace with another bio professor. She's very unfair and expect us too much from us.... i work my butt off and still yet to see a passing grade on her exams. I thought if I just study hard enough I would overcome this, turns out it wasn't the case with her :(
BIO100
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! you will end up lowering your GPA. Dr. Alaie or the TAs are making these positive notes just to fool you guys into thinking she's not bad. There's too much work for this Intro class! Essays are easy but her MC are NOT. It's better to use e permit and take it elsewhere than here. As a honor student, her class is the worst I taken
Biol102
Dr. Alaie is a wonderful professor. Yea she's difficult but she has a very clear concept of biology that she is willing to share with her students. I learned alot in her class. You need to memorize the book and notes and understand it ofcourse for the exams.. but she helps you memorize everything by explaining it all. plus she's always there in her
bio100
SHE SHOULD BE FIRED!!! she is the worst teacher in the world. she pretends to care a lor about her students but she doesn't. Her notes do NOT reflect the material on her exams at all. she is so vague in class and then so detailed on exams which is so unfair. If you must take bio classes take it in some other school.
BIO100
She's the worst science teacher I ever had in my life. She doesn't curve her exams which I find ridiculous. Like half the class didn't do well from her exams and they horrid!!! She's so bad that I have to take medication for the amount of stress and anxiety I have to go through. This class makes you feel like full full time student.
Bio100
I took Bio 100 with Alaie and I got a C+. I'm taking Bio 200 and I'm finally getting normal grades (higher than a B). It comes to show that its her releasing her bitter wrath on everyone. I'm glad I'm through with her. Pull through guys, it gets better after intro!
BIO1
Although I am getting an A, it is NOT because of this teacher. She is not an understanding or compassionate teacher. She has an ugly disposition. A good teacher is someone who makes difficult material seem fun and simple. She does the opposite. Start reading the text before enrolling. Ask prior students for their exams for previews.
bio100
Dr. Alaie is insane. More than half her class failed her last test and it doesn't occur to her that maybe she isn't teaching the material that she puts on her tests? It is really unfair there is only one bio teacher available for 750 students. PS, If I wanted to take a logic test, I would take the LSATs.
Biolo100
I don't know what all those suck ups are talking about.. I am a Bio major, I took the 200 levels and the 300 levels, these INTRO to Bio classes (100 & 102)are by far the hardest bio classes i ever took! I hate Dr. Alaie, it's really time to have her replaced!!!
Biolo100
I can bet you the good comments posted here are either posted by Dr. Alaie herself or her TAs. I am a straight A student and I'm failing Bio. I dedicate many hours to studying and I sure understand the concepts presented in the chapters. The problem is that her test questions and answers are extremely tricky. If you're smart, do not take this class
BIO102
Lets look at a few numbers. Last midterm/test average for the people who took it was 52.8/125 (42.24%).Amount of people who got above 65% or 81/125 was 80 students out of 664. Lets just hope she doubles our grades so we have a chance at getting a normal grade.
Biol100
Class involves to much memorizing plus she really needs to give a guideline for what to study for the exam. It's too much to condense for a full time student. I need another bio professor. Not everyone here wants to go for med school you know.
Bio100
Yeah that post makes no sense! Hard classes get their budget cut, please! Oh and it's there not their, at not in, many not much, saw not seen (or I've not I), and low? not long (I think). I took the class, and it's the reason I'm at a top 5 med school. Go Study!
BIO100
Stay away enough said.... you wonder why their was a budget cut for biology in hunter... it's because too much people are doing poorly... i seen the results of the exams..... average of the class as a whole was long in general. Biology at other colleges will get more money because Hunter biology is too hard with this professor.
BIOL100
Enough whining. College is hard, exams are hard, deal with it. She is an amazing teacher. The bad reviews are from people who want an easy A and found out the hard way that they need to work to get that A. She writes the notes for you and gives you every opportunity to do well, you just have to put in the time and be patient! She's the best!!
bio100
Hunter can do better than this. Mrs Alaie can do better than this. I know this may sound rediculous I would think that having an additional 1 or 2 exams for the course will make it easier than to try to comprehend so many chapters for one test. Just a thought
BIO100
I agree that this course has brought me a high level amount of stress and anxiety. I have never endured anything like this in my life. I always been good with science courses and have a passion from it. Even nominated with the excellent in science award in HS only achieve to have the higest avg for sci in HS. BUT COMPARE TO THIS SHE'S THE WORST! !
bio100
To the people who say what do u xpect when u go to med skool...not all of us plan to go so is it fair to stress us out so much. This teacher is so unfair how can you give so much work in an INTRO class! Met a bio major and hes failin. Run i thought if i studied real hard id b fine well ive been studying since i started and far from passing tear tea
bio100
Never in my life have i endured so much stress and anxiety. Don't think she comprehends exactly what we go through for preparing for her tests. She needs to be more specific regarding what is going to be on the exam. I understand she wants us to learn all the concepts but it's absolutely impossible to cram all this info into your brain.
BIO100
Before taking this class. Prepare for your winter or summer break by memorization training, start reading the bio book before head, be prepared for high stress, do take only 1 memorization class because anything more than 2 is stressful, and attend tutoring, recitation and lecture. If you follow this guideline then your good to go =}
BIO100
Lots to memorization in concepts + difficult exams + lab = very hard --> very hard + other classes added to biology = very very hard --> very very hard + not attending to recitation + not reading the biology book + not paying attention to lecture = IMPOSSIBLE TO PASS. My conclusion, work your butt off.
BIO100
Her exams are too difficult and the amount of reading in the bio book is insane. This class is overwhelmingly stressful and made me have to pursue another major instead of bio.
BIO100
Even though I did well on her tests, I would not call them fair. The amount of time we spent on a topic did not correlate with how much they appeared on a test. My advice is to study hard on your own, because Dr. Alaie speed-talks through her powerpoints only to repeat herself again and write illegibly on the projector.
BIO102
i dont know what is her aim;to fail the students or simply decrease the percentage of biology majors at hunter...well!her exams were veryyyyy hard and tricky;dropped down my GPA...made me scared of biology so please please dont take bio at hunter as you wont have any choice but to take her class
BIO100
If you read the chapter before lecture and LISTEN to her while you take down her notes, you would really know what's going on (unless you're not very good with english). Tests are hard, but she's making it so that you learn concepts, not just simple facts. A lipid molecule has a polar and nonpolar end. Who cares? But that's how cell membranes forms.
BIO100
I'm starting to feel that all the negative comments about her are true. I studied like to no extent everyday for this class. When the first exam came. well let just say i should of listen to previous students who took her class. HER EXAMS ARE TRICKY! if your reading this. it's best to take bio at another college than at hunter
Bio100
Whoever says that her exams are unfairly hard, welcome to grown-up life. The class is designed to help you do well, if you don't it's your own fault. She is amazing and wants everyone to do well, and makes herself available to help you if you let her. Go to class, read the book, and go to recitation!
BIO102
absolutely the worst in exams ever!!!!! I promise on the upcoming semester i will gather every students grades, exams, etc. and will make a complaint with the board. The questions on the exam are so TRICKY, they're disgusting!!!! Its a promise.
Bio102
Yep its true. 55 out of 450+ students received an A. She takes more fun in failing students than in actually giving them work with the right amount of challenge. Overchallenging a student to the point of near impossibility is not being a good teacher. I'm glad I'm done with her. Never again.
BIOL102
Previous post is inaccurate. If you do the math, SP '08 stats are as follows: 17 A-/27 A/11 A+. So, 55 people out of 450+ received A's! Do yourself a favor and on the first day of class look around the room: about 1 out of 10 students will get an A. If that motivates you, study hard, record lecture, ace lab and that person might be you. Good luck!
BIOL102
If you made it past Biol. 100 with her, you might as well stick with it. Nothing really gets easier (you still want to knock her down the stairs after an exam), but at least you know what to expect. Labs. are a bit more fun...
BIO102
Absolutely the best professor I've ever had. She spends countless hours with her students and presents lucid, informative lectures. Her exams are crystal clear but you will have to put in many hours of work. Sadly for Dr. Alaie she teaches at a school with largely lazy students. If you can't get an A you weren't going to med school anyway, I bet.
Biol102
If every teacher were half as good as Dr. Alaie, we would all be incredibly lucky. Those who write otherwise obviously never took the time to try to get to know her or give this class a chance. You must work very hard to do well, but it is worth every minute, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat if I could. She is the best!
Bio100
I agree with other posts, if there were more options I would take the second part. Take it only if you are a pre-med, but you should be competent in bio before you take this course. Think twice before you register, you have been warned. If you?re slow, just pass, replace or drop, all the effort is not worth it.My advice to the wise save your GPA!
Bio200
She teaches the class like were in medical school and talks like 100 mph. The test are tricky riddles that mess with your head. No straight forward questions. Together with the lab its real hard.
Bio100
I took this class and received an A. Why does the Bio Dept not offer this class with another professor? Afraid that no one will take Alaie's class? I know that I wouldn't.
bio100
wow, someone must not have done well on the last exam to post, what 5 times back to back about how they don't like her. Truth is she's great, yeah it's hard but lots of us do well, just because you don't doesn't mean it's her fault. focus on her lectures - they're gold. As for Dr. Alaie - she's amazing!
bio100
She is flat out amazing, someone should give this woman an award. She is by far the best instructor I have had at any college hands down.
BIO102
I am utterly conflicted. She is an awesome professor BUT her exams are extremely unfair. The essay portion is, however, very fair. The multiple choice portion is something that only the devil himself could forge. You'll read the question and it'll twist your mind to the point where the wrong answer appears to be super right. I used to love biology.
Bio102
SHe's friggin awesome!! Hard? Definitely, but who said it was going to be easy? Just shut up and read the book and pay attention, that is all
BIOL100
If she reads this on the first day, listen: If this for your GER, RUN: Bio 100 is a HARD class (it's not high school); take it only if necessary. Alaie's a good professor (not that there's an alternative), but her exams are killer; you WILL cry after the first one. At least she's not yet too old for you to check her out when she faces away...
BIOL100
No contest - best professor I have ever had. Hard exams but you will really know the material if you succeed in the class.
Biol100
She is an outstanding professor. You'll not only come out with an understanding of Bio but you'll learn new ways of thinking and questioning. Read the book before lecture attend recitation and keep in mind that every point counts. You'll be disappointed with your first exam grade but don't give up go to the exam review and learn from your mistakes.
Bio100
I don't get the people who say sh!t like "She knows her stuff, but she can't teach. Here's my bad grade to show for it." It's like The Matrix, people! She shows you the door, you walk through it! She loves what she does, and she does it well. She looks good doing it. And if you study right and do the work, do well on quizzes and in lab, you'll ace!
BIOL100
WONDERFUL! SMART! She is vibrant and young, her lectures are extremely interesting, and she provides great notes enriched with her power point slides. She will crack jokes and have you smiling and thinking about biology long after the end of class. It's tragic that she allowed Persell to teach - a big mistake. Don't forget to read the textbook! :D
Biol100
Dr. Alaie is one of the best professors Hunter has to offer. She is very clear and helpful. She provides her students with all the means necessary to do well in the class: free tutoring, Socrates Center, excellent recitation instructors who hold their own office hrs., her own office hrs. and reviews after the exams. No other professor does so much!
Bio100
She is rather stuck up. Her lectures are ok, even though she talks to fast and her notes are too summarized for the type of questions she asks in the text...far too hard. Study the book word for word.
Bio100
After getting through bio 100 with minimal effort, I know what it takes to reasonably pass. study her notes and watch out for tricky exam questions; the final exam will save you in the end, though.
Bio100
Dr.A is a great prof in terms of teaching and writing tricky questions (exams r EXTREMELY HARD)U will have to study 24/7 &make sure u know every single detail in her notes.I studied 24/7,read her notes mil times & still couldnt get an A. I had nightmares before taking her exams & almost had a heart attack when checked my 1st exam grade. Good Luck!
BIO100
Before this class, take: chemistry;english(to understand her long&tricky questions);philosophy(logical reasoning-a must!);psychology(to deal with oppression & self-hatred).Read the book 24/7, attend all RCs and move into socrates center SO THAT U PASS THE CLASS!Dont count on quiz in the book, but make sure u actually absorb her notes and the book!
BIOL100
she's very clear with her explaination of the material & always answers questions that are asked. exams are EXTREMELY hard & didnt do nearly as well in the class as i would have liked to but overall she is a good professor. the class takes a lot of time, reading, and studying & even w/ all that still hard to pass.
bio100
I studied as much as possible considering the fact that I had other classes, a full-time job and a 3 year old daughter. Did horribly on the class but feel she is a great professor. Her exams kill you though. I studied so much that I broke up with my boyfriend so I had more time to study for the final yet I still cried when grades were posted.
BIO100
I didn't do great in the class but it was certainly not her fault, she's awesome, everyone involved with the class is great! I hope to step it up next semester.
BIO1000
This class is not easy in my opinion in terms of her exams. However, there are many chances to do well in this class. You just have to do what you need to do and know that every student is different in terms of the amount of work they need to put in to achieve a good grade. Ive had my share of horrible professor and Dr. Alaie is far from it!
Bio100
A truly excellent educator, Dr. Alaie makes it her business to make a heap of material make sense to a varied group of students. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and I'll come away from this class with a wealth of understanding of a subject I previously knew nothing about. Definitely worth the work for future drs or scientists or humans of any kind.
Bio100
Of Course you have to put in time, you have to earn your grade, but the fact is she gives you everything you need to do well, upped the extra credit and is so helpful! If you don't get it then do something about it, see her, see a TA or tutor. You are given every opportunity to do better. I struggled on the first test, but by the final I loved it!
Bio100
Spent all my time studying for this class had no time for any other classes i had, came to take the final and started crying in the middle!she seems like a nice person BUT her tests are horrible!you live eat and breath biology and still its not enough!i thought ppl that complained here just did not study enough but nope so WATCH OUT!!!!!!!
Bio100
She is a really good professor and gives the students many chances to pass the class. Her exams are extremly tough but if you work really hard you can actually pass. Go to her office hours she is very helpful in making you understand the material. :D
bio100
she does a great job of explaining biology. her notes are awesome and she does not b.s on anything. if u do everything she says, you will pass. her exams will kill u if u arent prepared...by that i mean if u failed to read at least once a day you will fail...after this class you will know for sure whether or not biology is the major for you!!!
Bio100
She is a genius and a comedian. Her exam questions are tricky, but if you get them right you feel awesome. She is a wonderful and engaging lecturer and one of the best professors I have ever had. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS, she will answer any question you have and ask you to think beyond the surface level of the material.
Bio100
Nice professor. Honestly if you are a freshman she says most will fail because you need to get a study groove. Forget a boyfriend or girlfriend, your Bio book is your new love aka your BIBLE! You need to study everyday and read chapters at least 3x to pass. Her multiple choice questions are tricky! Better off studying at home and going to tutoring!
Bio100
If you don't do well in the class it's your fault not hers I'm sick of people complaining that it's impossible, some of us can do it just fine. If you can't handle this good luck to you down the road. Cry babies.
BIO100
A great professor hands down, no doubt, but her tests..geez study a month ahead, read the chapters AT LEAST 4 times, dont memorize BUT understand, pray to every God you know and cross your fingers and hope that you're not 1 of the 400 who does horrible in the mc and if you do, reverse time and study for the final in the beginning of the semester
BIO100
okay prof. alaie honestly and truthfully, shes a great lectureer! she keeps u awake and shes really eager for you to know the stuff. She clear, sweet, and gives great notes. However her notes arent good enough. READ READ every line in that freakin textbook. She may seem really nice but her exam are like HELL!!! Know everything forward and backward
BIO100
Dr. Alaie is awesome! Her lectures are clear and very helpful, she also takes the time to write the notes for us :).. Her MC questions are insanely hard! READ YOUR TEXTBOOK or you won't make it out alive!
Bio100
For everyone who thought she was too tough, don't even bother with O-Chem, much less med school. Three years into med school I look back and think she was the best teacher I had to date. My one piece of advice. Read the text book, make sure you understand and can reproduce every diagram... that's the key to the essays.
Bio0002
Best. Teacher. Ever. Clear, interesting, and funny lectures. The course requires work but it's not impossible and her notes are really thorough and nothing is out of left feild. If you don't do well it's not because she didn't give you everything you would need.
BIO100
Medical school simulation class..test's to see if ur cut out for medical school...seriously..think of her notes as a transcript, see how far you can go..good luck to all of you i got out with A's..oh...and watch out for philips..lol
bio100
I'm an average sudent and english is my second language. taking bio class with this professor was a huge challenge for me. I was studying very hard and I got B. it is possible to get a good grade in this class and do well later in other bio classes. I'm really glad I could have such a great bio professor like Dr Alaie.
BIO102
I have to be fair and say she's a good professor. She's funny and clearly likes her field. BUT she is also very hard, which doesnt jusitfy the fact that this an introductory course. To those of you that say that people are lazy , I know people who are not and yet they still struggled through this class. You study and study, come to her lectures ..a
Bio102
This class should be called Biology 5000, not bio 100/102. It's a really hard class to take. You will have to study VERY hard. But, think of it this way, the next time your doctor tells you that you have cardiovascular problems, you will understand what he's talking about! Good Luck.
bio100
Dr. Alaie is quite immature for a woman her age.She teaches to her little follows and could care less if others don't understand "because it's their own fault." Any true leader in that class gets cut down fast and lost in the system. The tests are designed for people who think like researchers/ to become researchers. She publically downs med. stu
BIOL100
Her lecture is huge, but she works it just fine. Her tests are hard, and you have to really study to do well.
BIO102
Dr. Alaie is the best professor you will ever have. Ignore the haters here, they chose to hate the professor instead of taking her challenge to heart. You will have to work extremely hard to get an A in her class, but it is worth it -- you leave with a deep and relevant understanding of biology. Some people have to work extremely hard just to pass!
BIOL100
Absolutely amazing, the BEST teacher I've ever had. I really didn't want to take a 700 student lecture course, but she makes it enjoyable. Try this. GO TO LECTURE. Get what she's talking about. Understand it, and fill in the gaps with the textbook. And try out those recitations, they really make the material second nature.
BIO102
Dr.Alaie is by far one of the BEST professors I have ever had, you will not find another professor who lectures with the clarity/interest that she does. You do have to put in the time, go to class, rewrite your notes, read the text book, think abstractly, but that's what your supposed to do, it's not her fault if your not willing to. She's AWESOME!
bioab
yes it is true she is tough, yes it's true that her tests are not easy, yes it is true that you need to study a lot during the whole semester, but if you really want to learn biology and UNDERSTAND biology, she will help you to achieve it and get into the med school. Don't blame doctor Alaie for your laziness!!!!!
bio102
made me hate biology and contemplate dropping premed all together. Her tests are ridiculous and if you can get out of her class by hook or by crook then do it.
BIO100
Exams are straight from the lectures. Some guy posts lecture notes at icebrrrg.com. Tests are tricky, especially the essays, which I never really knew if I was answering the right way or not. Study/know/understand your notes. She moves really slowly in lectures, and usually talks about something, then writes it down on the projector.
BIO102
Because of her I think I will never become a DR...I have lost my faith in it, I mean she teaches and you think you got the stuff, test come around and its nothing of what she taught! she is too difficult and does a horrible job at it! I passed with flying colors but still shes just to harsh!
BIO102
Can't really see why she's so inlove with herself given sense of humor is her only virtue (unlike 65 people who have evidently sat far away from the stage deem). Her teaching method allows her to cover a fairly small portion of each chapter in class while exams really cover them in depth, making her lecturespointless(just study alone from the book)
Bio102
woah, exams 30 something questions and 2/3 essays, multiple choice = death, essays = really doable
bio100
People who think Alaie is too hard and "destroys their path to med school" have another thing coming. wake up! she is preparing you for med school. bio is by nature a tough class and she makes it as real and comprehensible as i have seen any prof in the sciences. the reality is if you cant handle bio, youre not going to handle med school. so growu
bio102
i think atleast 2/3 comments below r from the same user...two words..dont hate..shes an awesome professor n she is a good teacher (how dare u diss her on that part) her tests mite not be teh easiest btu who ever said bio was easy..u work hard and u can definately do well..n she is very intelligent..so dont listen to the haterz! :-D
bio100
Too much details and information for an introductory biology. Thinks that her subject is the only subject and is the most important. Tests are confusing, hard and you never have enough of time to finish it. She seems nice and smily but actually destroys you and your path towards medical school. She just makes people cry!!!The worst!!!
bio100
umm i think she is trying to prove something. im not quite sure what. Its a challenging class, got an A from studying the textbook myself. shes not a good teacher.
Bio100
Does not know how to teach. Makes everything seem so simple but exams come up she destroys you. Too much work for one class, she just keeps on going. the course should be about quality not quantity, (Public colleges suck, they enjoy killing their students) Hunter is not good for science but one of the hardest colleges.
Bio100
This class is not impossible. The problem is that there is so much details to memorize and understand that it literally takes many 16 hours to study a week. once you feel you have mastered the material she smacks you with really tough questions. you need to dedicate 100% if you have another science class with this class it's going to turn very stre
Bio100
Dr. Alaie is exellent. She teaches the information thoroughly and in an interesting manner. Yes, her exams are difficult, but what do you expect from a biology class that is suppose to prep you for medical school. I got an A and I studied hours on my own, went to her office hours, and went to lecture.
Bio100
Okay so what if she she is nice looking, i love bio and studied my butt off for this class but this class is not fair at all. It's not the prof. or anything it's just the grading system for this class sucks i've never got a C+ ahhhhhhh i am so mad i know i do not deserve that grade but hey what can u do :S.
BIO100
I got an A (I took Bio before). I do not think she was great. If you think Dr. Alaie is the best prof. ever, you have been deprived of a good education. There are much better ones out there.
bio100
i got a B. i took this semester 13 credits and worked full time as well. a very bed idea. i love biology and i dont mind studing hard but whats the story with those tricky tests ? i'm an international student and my english will never be as good as a local student english. better be ready DR, i'm going for an A next semester
bio100
(1) She's not hot at all what's worng with you ppl!? (2) Bad teaching philosophy. Basically she just rephrases the book's wording. You can either listen to her talking or take notes, impossible to do both. (3) Can get too sarcastic, arrogant, and impatient outside of class. (4) Extremely hard exams, which DO NOT cater to your knowledge in bio.
Bio100
She is funny, teaches good but expects you to understand in depth. Her exams are a bit tricky, the first exam wasn't as bad. Read her notes and also understand them. No hw, Just Read. She is very helpful, just ask her...although she can make one feel nervous at times. JUST ASK!!!
Bio100
If you want to go to med school, u must learn how to manipulate the facts in Biology b/c it isn't enough to just simply know the material. However, if you are just taking this class for GER, I suggest that u take chemistry instead. Trust me compared to bio, chem is a piece of cake. I know this b/c I took both classes. Study VERY hard...Good luck.
BIO100
Excellent professor, talks a bit fast but that is OK if you read the book prior coming to class. I think overall, her teaching and the department are awesome. They are very fair when it comes to grading, everything is on a database available online for the students. Great learning experience eventhough the subject is overwhelming at times (is colle
bio100
She is a great professor but her exams are very hard. If you will have to take this class I recommend to take very easy classes with it because if you will take this class you will have to study at least 3 hours a day and you may still fail it or get a D.
Bio100
Unfotunately, this class was by far the worst educatoinal experience I have ever experienced. Given her doctoral degree, I trust that Dr. Alaie is knowledgeable about the basics of biology, but she could not teach well at all. I expect an A in the class but this is due to my having studied on my own not due to her ability to teach.
bio100
without a doubt alaie is a great professor ...this is definitly a course for med school and is extremly hard to handle...if ur willing to spend at leaste 3 hours a night for this course then this class is for u..her tests are extremly difficult..i had a chance of getting an A aswell but lost my chances b/c of the final..gl everyone ur in for a ride
bio101
She is a very intelligent professor, but Bio is extremely difficult because there is a lot to memorize. She is the best out of the bio professors at hunter, but if your not willing to put at least 3 hours of studying a day then don't take it! This is prep for med school. She is funny and creative and enjoyable to listen to. Very hard exams though.
bio100
shes so funny ..one of her final exam choices that i took today btw said that we'd come to ratemyprofessor.com to rate her neg. btu thas not possible eventhough i think this final screwed me over big time..i had a chance of getting an A n now im praying for a B..
BIOL102
One of the best biology professors out there. The topic is tough but she makes it interesting and fun. I miss her classes!
BIo100
HORRIBLE! Unless you already have a lot of prior knowledge of biology or you are pre-med don't take her class. Be prepared to spend every free minute with your textbook. Multiple choice is very difficult. The TAs will screw you completely. If you need a last GER DO NOT TAKE THIS ONE!!!!!!
Bio100
Dr. Alaie is not only a brilliant woman, she is an excellent professor. The multiple choice exams are challenging as hell, but the essays are straightforward and doable with a good mastery of the concepts of this course. Definitely an excellent preparatory course for future biological study
BIO102
This class will prepare u to study for med school so get ready. She is an auesome teacher however, great body, really knows her stuff. She's fair gives extra credit. BE AWARE LAB PROFFESORS AND TA's are what SCREW U! Get ready to marry the textbook and take her with you wherever you go!
bio100
she is a great prof. her notes are very helpful...the book is really good....her test are fair...the essay questions are the most important.....attendance is not mandatory but i recommend going...she gives extra credit.....Loved Her!
bio100
She definately knows her stuff. Gives great notes which are helpful but the exams are very difficult.
biol100
Definitely recommend. Great professor, really gets material across to students and is very intellegent. She is also very funny and makes learning extremely fun.
Bio100
Great professor. Loves her stuff. Tries hard to teach a huge class. Answers questions during and after class as well as during office hours. Bio 100 and 102 are hard as it is, but at least it's fun with her. Just be prepared for the all nighters and know that the week before any exam, you can find up to 20 people studying on the Library's 4th floor
bio101
She is everything a professor should be. She expects you to THINK, and insists that you do. She is delighted when this happens. Her tests are very difficult, but the final is weighted more. Also - she looks like a movie star, and is a good role model for the rest of us sort of attractive women. Women rule science! Or we will...
bio100
Her tests are a bit tough though her lectures are enjoyable. I got a C on her but I don't care. At least I learned a lot. I never took Bio 102. I'm just testing the water. She knows her stuff from the heart. She's a smart and beautiful too. That's why I always enjoy her lectures.
Bio100
I understand why people say this class is super hard and that she kills u on the exams. But bottom line is, she challenges you and thats what i loved about her class and i felt so proud of myself wen i got an A. I wouldnt recommend for GER cause u might feel ure studying way too much just for GER, but for pre med etc she is AWESOME!
Biol 100/1
02
NOT a choice for GER. Strongly agree that if you are going to medical school then take this class for it's going to force you to study very hard. Otherwise avoid this class because you just won't do well unless you make every effort to study. Exams are hard and your essays will be graded by TAs, just impossible to be fair.
Bio 100/10

Overall an excellent prof and nice too. But as many raters have said, the MC ?s often test your skill at semantic tricks more than your knowledge of Biology. I'm good at semantic tricks and did fine, but I can't imagine how somebody who's not a native English speaker could possibly get an A no matter how completely they mastered the material.
biol 102
if you are taking this class to fill your ger requirement.....STAY AWAY! however.....if you love bio and want to go pre med shes for you. shes amazing, very smart, very nice, very funny....and did i mention hot? her tests are INSANE though. shes no nonsense. although i didnt do well, i respect her.

To get an A: u will bust ur ass..forget about going out on friday nights and going to the gym, the library is ur life and the textbook will be ur girlfriend...want to be a doctor? get an A and medical school is for u... Essays: study hard, so write every little thing inside ur essay...sometimes they'll make u run 10 miles and shoot u after...

I took this class hoping to learn something....I learned a lot. However that doesn't matter cause even if you understand the material, it's very difficult to do good on the test. Exams are very tricky, and test your trivial skills more than what you know on the subject. This class is interesting but nearly impossible.

This class in not for those who just want to meet the GER requirements. My lab professor told me that you will not find an intro BIO class like this ANYWHERE. It was not not simply enough to understand the material, you have to break it down to its basic elements which is where I had my problems.Seems great for pre-med, too much for GER
BIO 100/10

Like others have said her tests aren't easy..but they aren't impossible either. You really have to understand the material very well and read her questions carefully. If you do that, then you shouldn't have a problem. For her essays, write everything you know about whatever the question asks. You don't know what she wants from her essay question.
BIO102
This semester was exceptionally hard, especially with the 1st essay being a killer. She is a very smart person that she knows her stuff well. But her exam is just tricky, period and doesn't reflect her lecture well. You have to know how to maneuver around the choices:all the choices could be right but then there is one that's more right than others.

Put it like this: you have to KNOW the material to take her exams; but she is a great professor and very approachable and friendly outside of class. Very knowledgeable and makes the material interesting. Very good professor. Her tests can be a bit hard, but she expects you to know the material (and what professor wouldn't?)
Bio 101, 1

She doesn't lecture. She talks and writes down EVERYTHING that comes out of her mouth, word for word. That might be engaging if you're in grade school but it's absolutely boring on the college level. Her exams are geared to trick you and test your ability to maneuver semantics more than they test your knowledge of the subject.Less friendly out of class
BIOL 102
Outstanding professor, excellent kills and not bad to look at either. She has a great sense of humor sometimes over the top, challenges students intellectually and gosh if you make it in her class you know more than you bargained and paid for.

Incredible teacher, her enthusiasm about the subject makes even the most boring parts of the course interesting. The exams can be a little tricky, but she gives 50 bonus points so it's easy to get a good grade. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!

For the person who commented, "if u can't handle her clas, can't become a doctor"!Exactly, not everyone who's taking this class wants to be a doctor. I love Dr Alaie though, don't get me wrong.

Overall she's a great teacher, very nice and helpful someone who really wants her students to succeed

Dr Alaie is one of the greatest professors at Hunter college. Her lectures are very clear. If one goes to class and take notes you will do fine on her exams because they are straight from her notes. Just make sure that you read the questions CAREFULLY. She is also a nice and caring person. she helps alot during her office hours.
bio 100
If you can't handle her class, you shouldn't become a doctor, plain and simple. As a current med student, I think she is on the same level as medical professionals and college professors from across the country. There are ivy league professors that won't teach you nearly as good in biology. Count yourself lucky or get lost, but stop whining!

people say she should take it easier. She really cant. If you read the book, you will see that the material covered is in depth and up to date. Life is extremely complex, the book really gives a flavor of this complexity. It will only get more complex but at the same time, with regulation as the clarifying concept, lucidity will form like a ghost.
BIO 100
I agree about the level of difficulty in this course. If BIO 100 is this hard and in depth what are the upper level courses like? Too much info for me, I'm just trying to get CORE credit. "Fair Exams"? Yeah if you've got a PhD in Bio. Can't wait till this nightmare is over!...But she is funny and better than Dr. Shahn.
bio
Great teacher, great class, but I truly agree with the past 2 raters below. I know many people gave up becoming a premed after taking her class. Think about it, it's just bio 100 and it's this hard! Again, she is a great teacher who is extremely intelligent, but she also has to know that this is an introductory course.
Bio 100
I am being objective: Very clear, funny,& approachable in her lectures, no one will deny that. HOWEVER, she does give tricky exams. I don't mind being challenged, but Bio 100 is an introductory course, learning the basics of Bio; therefore, all the "trickyness" is unnecessary. Just test what you teach. Not everyone there is a future researcher.
Eng 220
Great teacher. Savage exams. Its a filtering system to make the biggest nerds pass. Even if a person has great potential to be a doctor he/she that opportunity will be taken away by this prof. It's not only about book smarts when it comes to medical prof. Even if you know the information but aren't good at logic games u will not get deserved grade.
bio 100
She puts everything in layman's terms for you. She writes all her lecture notes in essay form, and that is where she would bust your little fingers trying to write down her notes. She is hip and hot; remind me of Lorelai in Gilmore GIrls.

very hard teacher, will never get an A, but looks very good and pretends like she wants to help, but not true at all!!! doesnt act like a **** but kill you on your exams, do not take, but you dont have any other choice in HUNTER!!!

not sure how she teaches never go to class but the to days i did i almost wet my pants

great lady and great teacher, makes the class somewhat fun, biology itself is a boring course and very hard course.
bio 100
She's a great professor. Her notes are very useful. She takes extra time to explain to the students, and she really cares and wants us all to do well. I don't see how anyone could give her a bad rating..those people just need to work harder(and this is not a rating from an agressive post-bac)

Awesome Professor. She really knows her stuff and inspires you to learn as well. Her tests are killers but if you come to class and study you will do fine. Always do the essay first. After her exams you’ll have no problem on MCAT or DAT bio parts.
Bio100/2
She's great with lectures and notes but not with exams. Her questions are so confusing! You should see the size of her P/NC line at the end of the semester! I got a D but I walked away with so much info. It just doesn't add up. The concepts aren't hard at all. Also, the TAs grade the essay portion so if you have a tough TA, you're screwed.
bio102
To the previous poster, how did you manage to use her tests to study for the mcat? The tests are never returned to the students. I would have loved to get my tests back to gain an understanding of her test strategy. You're allowed to take a peek at your test in the presence of a TA, but you can't take it with you or copy it.
bio 100
I though Dr. Alaie was good before taking the MCAT, but now, after having taken the MCAT, I realize she's awesome. I've taken several biology classes after bio 100, but I continue to refer to her notes and teaching to truly understand concepts of biology. Her tests were the best preparation for the MCAT I could find.Thank you Dr. Alaie you da bomb!
BIO 101
If you have any choice, avoid her class. Makes an interesting and logical subject confusing and unnecesseraly difficult: writes notes, but they are not related to the textbook (or her tests); throws a ton of info on you, but all disjointed- does not connect things.Tests-tricky and ambiguous. But premeds have to suck up to her-she's on the committee.
BIOL100
She is hard. She is good, but the tests to me had too many possible answers. And the TA's to me were no help, since mine was partially deaf in one ear. Bio is a class better taught with less students than 750, since there are gonna be questions.
`100
One of the hardest prof in hunter and shez very unclear...gives good notes but they are completely the opposite of the exams...she speaks so fast that you rarely understand what shez talking about.....
BIO 100/10

One of the best professors at Hunter. She just cares so much about each and every student that she learns (almost) every name and face. when you figure there are 750 students in the class thats almost a miracle. take this class because you want to learn, not get an easy A, but work hard and you can get the A(or even A+). She's the best.

Dr. Alaie is really fair on her exams. No other professor writes the notes for you. But do expect to write alot in class everyday. Even if you dont read the book, review her notes and you should get at least a B. To top it off, Dr. Alaie is one hot woman. Always dressed neat and looking cute.
Bio 100 -

She's excellent. AND she WRITES out the notes for you! No other prof does that. DO NOT EAT THE BOOK. Read BEFORE lecture; go to class, STUDY from WHAT SHE SAYS (and writes) in class. That's what's tested. After lec, go back to book, make sure you understand. If don’t, go to your TA or use the Internet. This worked for me.

Alaie is one of the best professors I have ever had.She really has an instinctive flair for teaching. Many complain about her exams being tricky or unfair. Nonsense. They are excellent prep for the MCAT and higher level courses.Teachers who set easy exams are not doing you a favor on the long run. This is college, not high school.Get used to it.

Alaie is one of the best professors I have had in all my educational training (which is extensive). She is very organized, develops concepts logically and clearly, and is funny to boot. Her tests are perfectly reasonable if you've read the book and studied her notes. A great prep course for the MCAT bio.
Bio 102
Lectures are ok, but so what? They certainly don't prepare you for her exams. Just, do your gpa and your mental health a favor and take the class elsewhere.
Bio 100 &

Biology has vast amounts of reading and memorization (I think more than other other class). Professor Alaie tops this off with difficult multiple choice exams...she makes an already challenging course impossible.
Bio 102
Save youself the aggravation and don't take this class. You can study your brains out and still be unprepared for her multiple choice exams. They are just too tricky and no matter how prepared you think you are (yes, I ate the book!), you'll still be sitting there scrathing your head.
Bio 102
Yes, her lectures are somewhat interesting, but the exams are like sanskrit! And, with respect to what the other poster said about eating the book, yes absolutely. However, don't count on an A, as only about 20% get an A in her class. You need, an indepth knowledge of the material that goes beyound the scope of the book and her notes.
Bio I & II
If you want to do well in the class, eat the book, take the whole thing, put in your mouth, and eat it.
Bio 102
Great lecturer. The class is very well organized just like Bio 100. Exams are in similar difficulty to the MCAT free standing questions if not harder. I feel I have a good foundation to do well on the BS section of the MCAT. She and her staff does a great job in selecting lab TAs and recitation TAs.
biol 102
Sure, the lectures are interesting and fun but the tests are another story. Almost every multiple choice question has two choices that seem right.Other than that she is a good professor who welcomes any questions the students have. The rest of the bio dept should really learn from her!!
Bio 100, 1
02
Throw all your previous notions about biology out the window. In hear you will learn everything anew. Study your A** off!! The MC exams are difficult, but very possible if you study. She is very clear and cares about students. Cramming works, if your slick enough, but i would NOT advise it. Make sure you understand the book thoroughly!! Good luck.
Biology
Truly one of the best professors I've had in any subject. I would take any course she taught. She's compelling, enthusiastic, has a great sense of humor. You MUST study and be one step ahead in readings to get an A in this course. If you're new to science, be prepared to study harder than in any other subject (except maybe math). She is amazing.
Bio 100
The "real biology"? as oppossed to the fake one rite? lol.. nway.. Yeah, Dr. Alaie is awsome.. if u had to sum her up in one word it would be brilliant. The most knowladgabe, caring, nice, funny, loving, helpful and encouraging professor in the entire Biology Dept. oh and yes.. she's also hot.. no offence the the rest of the Biology Dept.

Alaie is a very smart woman. She knows what shes talking about but moves extremely fast. Her tests can come off as being hard even if you study alot and nightmares if you cram or dont study. Understanding the book helps alot and also read her notes for extra. Work hard and you can get B+, A- range

As a teachers she really cool and upbeat but the lectures consist of an immense amount of notes and her tests are killers , she puts Mcat style questions which makes even a person with a good understanding of biology have no idea which answer to choose. Essays are not as bad as multiple choice
bio 102
Dr. Alaie is like...good. No, i guess really good is better. Well, of course it's better, but I meant that really good is more appopiate. I think she test's like not hard. I got a 130 on her last multiple choice test, like not bad, huh?
BIO-102
Why are there any negative comments here? I agree with the guy be4... She's awsome.. but i would question her honesty when it comes to her age... she's always telling the class, "when u get to be my age.."... What is that? 25? ... like, therz no way she's over 30... nice try though Dr. Alaie..lol...
BIO100
Simply amazing. Not only is she funny, great looking, articulate, witty, smart; oh and lets not forget modest..., she "is" the prof. u'll remember after 20 years down the road... when u hear people say that Hunter has an awsome bio dept. ; Dr. Alaie is the reason why...
Bio100
She just moves so quickly and her exams are not an accurate reflection of the classwork.
Bio 100
She's a very demanding Prof but we can't expect to be spoon fed all our lives, we're in college remember?!! I absolutely enjoyed her class. I did pretty well in her exams, I didn't get the grade I wanted, but I had surgery, but I still got a good grade. Shes great and very funny.
Bio 100
Yes, she is very hard. But also she is very interesting and helpful. Great Professor.
Bio 100
Great lecturer, fair exams (as long as you are able to read English properly). However, she doesn't cover as much as other schools typically cover for Biology I.
Bio 100
Wish all my professors were as clear, dedicated and interesting as Prof. Alaie. She focuses on concepts and asks students to think during exams. Whiners cannot follow logic and/or English. Go back to HS! Rodrigo is good, but his knowledge is limited (he is a student, not a professor). Alaie rocks!
bio 100
Her tests are fair. But the notes she gives us are just too narrow. I only use it as an outline to the text. Rodrigo is the best tho! He should be our professor, I wouldnt mind at all. And yea. i agree with the person below who thinks he is more hot than dan!
Bio 100
Great teacher! Made biology fun. Her tests may be a little hard but they are COLLEGE tests! Stop whining! She is fair and very accessible. Much more than my other professors. Looking forward to another semester of good learning.
Bio 100
Guys stop fighting, I'll clear things out for you. Although she is a wonderfull teacher, when it comes to clarity in class and her teaching style Ill have to admit without good memorization skills and alot of studing time to get everything in before the tests there no way u getting a good grade. A+
bio 100
Are you nuts? Her final like all her tests are going to be a killer. I don't understand how you people think she's an easy tester. The only good thing is that she's an incredible teacher. I think she's great!
bio 100
Rock on! She rules. I think I'm switching my major from transcendental morphology to biology. I keep getting C's in all my psych classes, but this bio stuff is easy, A's, A's, A's...except for that lab final. So hard! She could have at least given us sample questions. But I think she's great!
Bio 120
She is alright but she is very boring. Rodrigo is more fun and makes everything exciting.
bio 100
One word describes Dr. Alaie...friggin' awesome! Those that complain are losers who can't keep up with people of average intelligence (or lazy and don't want to work). If you don't like bio, go take Chemistry! But whoever says Dan's the hottest TA hasn't met Rodrigo!
bio 100
I don't understand what you are all complaining about. I just read before her lectures, listen to her lectures and review my notes before each exam and do very well. I'm always surprised to hear everyone say how hard her tests are. If anything, compared to where I went to school before they're easy.
BIO 100
She needs to slow down and realize that everyone is not a bio genius like she is.This is college, but DAMN!The textbook is darn heavy, big and boring I could hardly bring myself to open it.Only good thing about this course is my TA Dan Blatz. Incredibly intelligent and special Professor! You can study the material incessantly and still faulter. She is very clear in her lecture but her exams force you to intricately know the material! Do not underestimate. I am an A Student and her exams murdered me, they seem easy but beware!
Bio 100
Dr. Alaie is so excited about the subject matter and very clear in her speaking. She takes the time to write ALL notes on the board herself so you can't miss anything. Her exams are very hard though because you must apply what you learned and she is tricky. She is really hot so she can keep ur attn!
BIO 100
Very clear, but 2 tricky on exam, especially for an intro course. its obviously not the students problem if 10% of the students get a B or above. expects you to apply info. without aiding you in getting there. doesnt give what she expects. hardest part is understanding what shes asking on exams
Bio 100
Dr. Alaie is very smart. She makes up the tests herself. Her multiple choice might kill you if you don't read throughly and you must understand everything that she talks about in lecture. She loves teaching the course, you could tell by how interested she is in the subject.
Bio 100
she is by far the best science i ever had and i have had a lot of science teachers. plus, she's not boring and pretty good to look at, which is always a plus to keep my attention.
