Phenomenal professor. Explains everything clearly with many examples. Exam data is given in advance, and multiple choice is right out of the notes/examples covered in class. Fair marker, and rewards critical thinking even if you're not entirely correct. Would take every linguistics course with this man if it were possible. He's brilliant.

John isn't bad at all! He's nice and his lectures are pretty fun if you have a real interest in Linguistics. I'd read the book and not get anything, but when I come to class to attend the lecture, I actually learn stuff.

Not bad at all. The course mainly focuses on 2 aspects, word schema and word syntax. His handwriting appears not good, however, the lec notes he provided were good enough. Textbook reading is recommended.

His basis for marking is unclear. You never know why you got a certain mark on an exam or homework. He doesn't like when you visit his office hours. Sometimes, you will get a 100 on the homework, and other times you will get a 70, but you will never know why.

Giving the final TWO weeks before the semester was over and THEN giving homework is ridiculous. Be prepared to remember specific LANGUAGE examples, even though the class is supposed to be about phonological *PROCESSES*. If I want to learn and remember specific languages, I'd be in a different class.

An extremely frustrating prof. Disorganized & complicated lectures that confuse students. I just read the text and skipped Lec cuz he's so boring and confusing. If I hadn't taken other LING courses before, I'd have been in trouble! Too hard for an Intro course. Makes tutorials a req and assigns homework. Totally killed my interest in LING! AVOID!!!

I cant believe people are saying Alderete is a good prof. I was interested in ling before I took this intro class, but now I just feel frustruated and lost because of John. In lec he uses terminology that is way too advanced for an intro class, and when he does pause to ask 'any questions' i dont even know where to begin. The tests are m/c but HARD

John is very helpful in the class when you ask some questions. However, he is very serious and mean in his office hour. The exam is very hard. However, if you study his lecture note, at least, you will pass his course. If you have other options, do not take his course. Not very good teacher. Not higly recomended.

He is very emotional. When he is happy, he is good. Overall I think he is not a good prof. The exams are not doable. Essays are very hard.

My favourite Linguistics professor at SFU. He is very thorough AND encourages thinking further than what he's teaching. His class was a lot of fun. The final project was the most fun I've had with any project.

Very intelligent prof, though very boring & lack of sense of humour(he yawns during his lectures). He tries to avoid ambiguity on exams, but is very picky with your wording on definitions/essays. Exams/assignments focus on his lecture notes which he prepares before lecture.
