Confused as to the overwhelmingly positive reviews of this course. To be frank, it's the bane of my existence. Lectures digress into tangents more often than not, and recitation is useless but requires strict attendance. I guess Joy's okay, but "Deliberating Citizen" is unbearable. Avoid at all costs. Everyone in my section tried to transfer out...

Civics, minus details. Clear professor, stale course, easy A. In-class reading quizzes are all common sense/knowledge if you're literate. Essays are exercises in making vacuous semantic distinctions across texts, basic English language knowledge required. Lectures degenerate into misc. dead white males by the end of the semester. Bearable.

Connolly is an absolutely perfect prof. for this MAP course which introduces notions of citizenship, statehood, and the relations between the two. Some students, whose majors aren't explicitly philosophical, claimed her lectures were inaccessible.. ANYONE can do very well in her classes, LEARN critical thinking through them, and ENJOY them. period.
CONWSDELI
By far one of the most interesting class I took in NYU. She knows what she's talking about, and is always there to help you when you need it. Be careful on the lectures as it is DENSE and I mean it. BTW I don't know what the person below is talking about; Kyle is awesome. Most helpful TA I've ever met, and a very fair grader.

She's pretty much awesome. I had some difficulty grasping her class, but to be fair she's so enthusiastic about her lectures that you do want to hang on to everything she says...I made the mistake of getting behind on my reading. Don't do that. Grading depends on your TA. Skip Kyle J. if you can: he's a great guy but seemed kind of lost at times.

Wonderful Teacher. Not too hard. I am not someone terribly interested in classics, but I found myself looking forward to her class regardless.

Love the professor. I took Deliberating Citizen and loved the course. Although, I don't recommend this course if you're intolerant to more non-structured lectures. She tended to go off on numerous (highly interesting) tangents that weren't necessarily directly about the reading, but in my opinion gave more connections to the reading.
TAIDEL
Had her for Deliberating Citizen. Easy class, not much reading, but the lectures were tangent-filled, boring, and incomprehensible. She's obviously sweet and brilliant and cares about the material and would be brilliant in a seminar but as a lecturer she's far less than ideal. Was actually looking forward to this class...not impressed.

Good professor. Keeps you engaged most of the time. Class is not overly difficult. Best of the worst in terms of texts and ideas courses. i highly recommend this course if it is a MAP requirement

Prof Connolly is AMAZING. I Had zero interest in ConWest and was totally dreading it but her lectures were clear and so interesting. She has a true passion for what shes teaching which really shines through her lectures. Workload was tough, if you put in the effort and work hard you can really learn something and get an A
ConWe2111
Great professor. I didn't have much interest in the classics but Connolly's class was very interesting. As long as you read you will get a good grade. The reading isn't that hard either.
CONWT101
Connolly is such a nice person overall. She is so knowledgeable and tends to talk a lot but nice enough to post her notes on the blackboard. Weekly quizzes are very easy usually on Wednesdays. Midterm is reasonably difficult and grade pretty much depends on your TA. I had Melanie Subacus who is probably one of the nicest person I've ever met.

The only prof I know that gives reading quizzes, thereby making attendance& reading mandatory. but also gives VERY LITTLE, easily understandable reading. Grade depends on TA- take melanie subacus SHE IS AWESOME and an easy, good grader. pretty easy midterm if you study, and a MEGA LONG take home final. all in all, conwest enlightenment=gpa booster
ConWEnli
Very intelligent professor! The subject is very interesting. TAs give fair grades on papers. The take-home final helps a lot and most people do well
ConWest
Energetic, smart, made a sincere effort to be as helpful as possible. Class wasn't very interesting, but from what I hear, it was much better than other sections of ConWest.
