"Tough Grader" "Get ready to read" "Lectures are long"

He is a really nice guy and is totally willing to help his students if they have questions. However, his lectures are very confusing because his teaching style is so unstructured. His lectures are basically him throwing his thoughts at us when they come across his mind. There really is no direction during lectures and barely addresses the readings.

As professor August is simultaneously awesome and not so awesome. The good: He knows his stuff, he very nice, will answer questions, and is very informal in style. The Bad:His informality can lead to some overly long tangents. As for the specific class:There were A LOT of readings, but they were interesting and you get a study guide. Loved the class

Professor Nimtz is awesome. If you complain about the readings, I'm not sure why you're in these high level poli sci courses. They're incredibly interesting, anyway. His study guides are pretty good. Not too much or too little information, and he is great at sticking around or being at office hours for questions. His late night emails are the best.

Nimtz is dope. He teaches life, which is the struggle of labor and capitalist classes. If you don't agree with this then take the class. He encourages dissenting view points, but he's smart enough to convince you otherwise. Get ready to rise up in communist revolution if you take his class...Go to lecture and you'll be fine for tests/papers.

I really, really loved August Nimtz' class. He is an extremely intelligent man- so, so knowledgeable about the African continent, Cuba, and he gives a fresh point of view about communism. Their is a LOT of reading, but his class is completely worth it. I learned so much.

His courses consist of garbled Marxist diatribes and watching "Frontline" specials. The books are also from a Marxist perspective, and no time or material is dedicated to opposing theories pertaining to politics in Africa. I have nothing against Marxism or Marxists per se, but Dr. Nimtz engages in demagoguery and indoctrination, not education.

The class is very interesting. He brings diversity to the otherwise an otherwise homogenous department. The trick to getting an A in his class is to attend and furiously take notes. His tests aren't hard, he answers his own study guide questions throughout the lectures so if you are taking notes you will find the answers and the relevant readings

Interesting class. Lectures a bit disjointed and scattered but I enjoyed them. Felt like I have a better knowledge the course subject. Need to take notes and reference notes/readings during midterm & final. Relatively easy A

I wanted to like him and I wanted to like his class. I feel like I learned so little. His lectures were horribly disorganized and not at all interesting. I am sympathetic to his socialist leanings, but if you're going to make huge claims about the evils of capitalism, you have to have some empirical evidence to back it up. I would not recommendhim

Horribly unorganized lectures that go off in tangents in all sorts of places. It wouldn't be too bad except I felt like I never learned anything real in this class. Other than that, it was an easy A if you study for the midterm & final exams. Oh, and there's over 150 pages of reading required each week, but most of it you won't have to do.

Nimtz LOVES Cuba. Ridiculous amount of reading; get a study group. Exam prompts don't leave much room for disagreement and the grading is rather harsh. Be sure to use lots of keywords in papers, just to show that you did all the reading, as opposed to going into detail on the concepts. Office hours are helpful as well.

I think people, who complain about many readings, are not eligible for attending Liberal Arts school. He is not really clear, but if you do readings and attend every his class, you can get an A. In fact, the class materials are quiet clear and easy to answer in exams comparing to other political science class. You can improve your knowledge!

Insane amount of readings. Some weeks had 250 pages to read. The most readings I have ever had for a class, let alone for 3 credits. Specifics of readings are tested on, but Nimtz never went over them in class. He is interesting, but not a clear lecturer for concepts. Told me to go talk to TA when I had questions about the test because she grades

Let me begin by saying I am extremely happy with my grade & I'm not out to get back at anyone for my own failures. Nimtz is very knowledgeable and knows his stuff from firsthand experience. BUT he is horribly unorganized and unprepared. Many times we were tested on things that were not even covered in lecture. I would avoid his classes.

I disagree with the complaints on Nimtz' grading. I would say I performed moderately well on the exams and finished the course with an A... Just cite the readings, understand the concepts and you will be okay. Lectures were thought provoking- which I think is the most you can ask for. He challenges the typical worldview- for better or worse.

Nimtz gives interesting lectures but nothing he lectures about ever really shows up on his exams. This course requires A LOT of reading that you must cite on exams. He seems like a nice guy with a lot of cool experience but doesn't speak much about it. Would not recommend this class.

He's passionate about what he teaches and very knowledgeable as well. HIS TA IS ABSOLUTELY AWFUL! She is on a power trip with the grading, so even if you love his lectures and are up to date with the reading, she'll dock you points and then can't justify why she did it. Love him, hate her - if you want a good grade then you'll need to argue for it!

completely biased. Only presents one side of the subject. I didn't learn much as the class was more of a pro-communist propaganda session.

I took 3 classes with Nimtz, A, A, and B+. I didnt think he was overtly difficult, i'd say he was engaging and challenges you to make good arguments with evidence. I went to class and did about 70% of the readings to get those grades - though i would literally just sleep/eat/breathe his take home exams for the 48 hours he gave us.
