Everyone on campus will say not to take him. I'm really glad I didn't listen to them. He puts more time into his class than any professor I've ever had. Not going to lie I made myself a slave to this class as much as possible. Honestly, I feel really lucky to have taken orgo with him. Might not get the grade you want, but the experience is worth it.

I had Portmess for both orgo 1 and 2 and it was a very hard class, but very doable if you studied his notes. I had him a couple years ago and was wondering if anyone knew his office hours this semester?

His class becomes very manageable once you learn that you HAVE to do his FUs, SODs, and MOWs. I recommend reading parts of the book he goes over to fully understand the concepts. His curve is weird and I ended up with an A-.

Portmess is by far the best teacher I have encountered. He is extremely helpful in lectures and in office hours (his TAs are awesome too). His tests are hard, but many questions come from "FUs" and "MOWs" that are given in class. If you study the way he tells you, you'll do great He also doesn't fail anyone, everyone gets at least a C if you try.

Dr. J is an excellent and helpful professor. Exams are tough. Study advice: be very comfortable with trends and practice lots of problems, especially ones from class (they can show up on tests). Don't look at the solution until you've tried the problem. Seriously! Finally, attend class. There are pop quizzes, and you will want those extra points.

A truly wonderful professor that is interested in the success of his students. You have to want it! Attend office hours. Do the FUs, the SODs, and the MOWs. Check the discussion board often. ATTEND CLASS. He makes orgo as easy to understand as possible. Definitely one of my favorite teachers thus far at UF!

The best advice anyone will ever give to you with Portmess is study his FU's, SOD's, and MOW's like CRAZY! These always show up on exams. Don't get behind, you'll just screw yourself over when it comes exam time. The exam average is around a 65 but he curves and gives extra credit in class so make sure you go, especially the day after the exams!

I love this guy. I don't understand how anyone could hate him; his exams are doable with studying, not impossible. After Orgo 1 I lost all interest in chemistry but Dr. J makes it interesting. He's very clear, and very helpful. Best professor I've ever had. Wish I could take him again. If someone didn't pass, it's only because they didn't study.

BEST professor at UF! Pay attention during class, read the book if you don't quite understand, and GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Use the teaching center and TAs, they are his previous students and are also FANTASTIC! You don't really need to practice outside of the F.U.s he gives you (quiz yourself with them before getting answers in office hours). Got an A

Excellent teacher. Very helpful. If you like puzzle solving, you'd love this class. Not very hard, but requires lot of practice. Do the problems in the book and the FUs from his notes and an A is very much possible.

This is the hardest class I have taken at UF I took it in 6 weeks and I honestly think the only way I made it through was because how much Dr. J cares about his students. He offers so much time and help to make sure that you can do the beat you possibly can in his class. It def wasn't easy but it sure was worth it in the end

Dr. J is the best teacher I've had at UF so far. Get to know him and go to office hours!! You have to work for a good grade but it pays off. He actually wants you to do well, unlike many other UF chem professors. Don't take it with anyone else! Also studying in groups helps for ths class.

I was scared about failing this class before the semester started. Ended up doing very well. Great lecturer and tests are mostly CRITICAL THINKING. Be able to apply knowledge to things you haven't seen. He gives out extra credit too. If you're just looking to pass, it's 60% or even lower depending on the average. TZ > StudyEdge for this class.

Hard class. Don't bother with the book problems unless he specifically tells you to look at them, or if you don't understand something. Tests are super unpredictable. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! He is super nice and willing to help. Also do TZ or StudyEdge if you want more practice/help.

Dr. J is by far the best professor I have had at UF. He teaches organic chemistry so well, but don't be fooled by this. His class is very difficult and requires alot of studying. I used the textbook nonstop to study for the exams. This is what ultimately got me the A I needed. Make sure to also do his posted past exams! They help immensely!

How to survive Dr J orgo: never miss class, if you go to class he will help you. Go to office hours, it help a lot! Do NOT fall behind! Do all book problems and find more! Memorization will not serve you well, understanding concepts will. Get TZ with Lauren and do the packets.Exams are hard, but lots of partial credit. You can get a A/B w/hard work

I wish I had more space. To the guy who "made his worst decision of his career" sounds like orgo was a wake up call. If you are willing to put in the work and learn the material, you will be fine. Go To Class! Dr J will help those who put in the effort. Miss class and you are on your own. Best Orgo professor at UF!

Best teacher I've ever had, and that's coming from someone who struggled through his class. Dr J pushes you to your limits but you learn so much about Orgo and yourself along the way. If you hate Portmess I'd argue that it's because you didn't invest the effort necessary. Not easy, but if you want to be proud of yourself when you pass, take him.

He is absolutely awful. Do not take his class. Some people say it's worth it because he "knows what he is talking about and forces you to learn." This is not true. He has absolutely no regard for students and literally tries to fail you. He makes every exam much more difficult that the other professors'. Worst decision of my college career.

Great lecturer with tough exams. Well worth it, but the book problems will only get you so far. His TAs are great, and Tutoring Zone helps a lot, too. Just this spring, he said students who used TAs and TZ did 7 points higher than anyone who used anyone else's help. I used TAs, but my friends also used TZ. We all did well when we worked together.
