SA150 Taken for Credit:Yes Attendance: Not Mandatory Textbook Use: Essential to passing Rater Interest: Really into it Grade Received: Not sure yet
"Lectures are long"

She preaches the wonders of being able to think critically yet does not truly want her students to engage in a critical manner. She expects students to take her word for gospel, internalize it and regurgitate it. She REFUSES to engage in a critical dialogue as to why her perspective is correct.

"Tough Grader" "Papers? More like novels" "Get ready to read"

really hard and not good. TA's are useless and hard markers overall. Lectures are very boring and she just reads off slides, if u ask a question she still goes her way and says no ur wrong. Definitely would not recommend. not good prof and TA's

Worse prof I have ever had. She puts me to sleep every time. Also, she takes attendance during every class so you must show up or else it'll reflect upon your grade. I wouldn't recommend taking any classes with her.

"Tough Grader" "Papers? More like novels" "Get ready to read"

Literally 100% more interesting than SA 150, but definitely much more challenging especially for a first year course. There is a lot of writing, and you need to read pretty much everything that's been assigned to do well.

SA 150 Taken for Credit:Yes Attendance: Not Mandatory Textbook Use: It's a must have Rater Interest: Sorta interested Grade Received: C+
"Get ready to read" "Skip class? You won't pass." "Participation matters"

Benita's lectures were so incredibly dry. There were multiple times where I would fall asleep during her lectures. A lot of reading and if you don't keep up it gets hard. She's clearly passionate about the course content but is sooo boring! She also says to have an open mind but then forces her ideas onto students & doesn't listen to their opinions

Taken at SFU. All these people saying that she's biased must not understand that there is no such thing as a truly objective opinion and thus have missed the point of her courses. That being said, this is a fairly tough course and I suggest that you go in with an open mind and be ready to read. Lectures are dull :(

"Lectures are long" "Skip class? You won't pass." "Get ready to read"

SFU course, btw. Although Benita is passionate about what she teaches, she is very flat and boring in lecture. I found the course content interesting, but going to lecture was an absolute bore. She planned out her tutorials carefully, which helped. Unfortunately, her exams are difficult and long. She barely gave us anytime to finish the midterm.

"Get ready to read" "Tests are tough" "Skip class? You won't pass."

She's teaching this class at SFU but seriously her lectures jump all over the place and rarely have anything to do with the textbook (yet she references it all the time?). Her voice could lull me to sleep, not her fault though but still... Also she takes attendance in a first year 300+ person lecture. Why???

"Skip class? You won't pass." "Gives good feedback" "There for you"

Amazing prof, best I've had at UBC. Why? She genuinely cares for each of her students on a personal level, and by 4th year, it's SO refreshing. She works so hard and gives so much of her time, goes above and beyond. She's TOUGH but it's because she cares and wants you to learn. It wasn't till a few years later that I realized how MUCH I learnt.

Cares for her students However treats course load like its your only class class content is at a 300 level for an introductory 100 level classif you're not a left wing liberal or a socialist, taking a stand on your opinion will be very difficult12 page research paper, group presentation, and final. Be prepared to work. great for SA lovers

BEST CLASS EVER! Best prof ever. Connected really well with the material Benita taught and her style of teaching. She ensures it's a safe space for poc, lgbtqia, and women. She kicks ass with teaching, and you learn a lot about privilege. The bad reviews you see here are from ignorant students who don't want to confront their own privilege.

Hypocritical - treated students in opposition to standards of respect laid out in syllabus. Assumes the worst of the entire class in terms of class knowledge and respect. Avoids the major concerns brought to her about teaching style.

Benita has convincing knowledge about Canadian society but lacks teaching skills. She teaches one day out of the week (other day presentations) very vague with the policy paper and not as helpful for the final prep.

Benita is an amazing instructor if you are willing to critically examine both yourself and your own privileges and dominant societal discourses. She cares for her students deeply and engages with the material rigorously. Her knowledge is amazing and you can tell she's done her homework. Come prepared to engage.

AVOID! She is extremely hypocritical and biased. She does not listen to opinions that differ from her own. Shuts down students and forces them to take on her opinions in order to get good grades. Will never take a course with her again

Unfortunatly thinks she is an expert on teaching methods and does not clarify when needed. She was very passionate and good lecturer, yet horrible with emails. One assaignment was so unclear that most of the class did it wrong, yet when I asked her she just repeated the syllabus instructions and only after did she acknowledge a lack of clarity.

I really struggled during the course but now I can connect what we learnt in class with work and family. Dr. Bunjun was a hard teacher but now I get it.
