CHEM 241B Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: What textbook? Rater Interest: Really into it Grade Received: N/A

Very good professor, ochem is hard no matter who you take. Go to class, take his notes. PRACTICE EXAMS and study guides are EXACTLY like actual exams. He comes off as kind of rude but all he is doing is preparing you. B is very attainable.

CHEM 241 Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: Essential to passing Rater Interest: It's my life Grade Received: N/A

Tests are hard but he prepares you well for them with practice exams/problem sets. He is really entertaining in lectures so I wouldn't say he is rude or boring at all. Ochem is a hard class in general and, with that in mind, I think he teaches it really well. You'll learn a lot and an A or B is definitely attainable in his class if you put work in.

Agreed that he is condescending and dismissive of students. Really quite rude in a toxic way. Not great for the learning environment.

His lectures are very organized and he explains things very well. A very smart guy who is willing to help you if you put in the work. Probably the best O-Chem professor at this university.

Chem 241A Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: Mandatory Textbook Use: Barely cracked it open Rater Interest: Sorta interested Grade Received: B

Dr. McGrath is a funny guy, and made OChem more enjoyable. The class is hard, regardless of teacher, and while the exams were difficult, I felt that McGrath did a good job of explaining concepts and pointing out important information. Make sure you go to class, lowest exam dropped, decent curve at end of class, and STUDY!

For those of you wondering what his curve is like, this is the curve for fall 2013 first semester ochem as posted by mcgrath on d2l. The grades were calculated as follows: A --> 86% (430/500) B --> 74.5% (372.5/500) C --> 58% (290/500) D --> 41.6% (208/500)

Avoid him if you can. This guy is on a major ego trip. His exams are impossible and they do not reflect what he goes over in class. He does not care about students-- maybe he has forgotten that our tuition helps feed him. Even if you study all the time, this class is sure to ruin your GPA. AVOID!

Honestly O Chem sucks and it's not a class anyone wants to take BUT McGrath made it a little better. Being able to drop 1 of your 4 exams definitely helps and the way he lectures (talks as he writes on the large white boards) is a great method. He is helpful most of the time and is a funny guy (if you have a sarcastic sense of humor). Take him.

While ochem is a difficult class, Dr. McGrath makes it worse. He actually said "Don't worry about orbitals, I don't even understand them." I basically taught myself everything using online resources. Read the (confusing) book, do all the homework, and know every mechanism forwards and backwards. Switch if possible.

Avoid if possible, He is brilliant but he honestly doesn't care whether you pass or fail. Practice Worksheets are riddled with errors, as they do more harm than good. Tests very high, as he expects you to learn many things on your own. Very condescending, and somewhat abrasive. Unless you want to purposely challenge yourself take another professor.

This class is impossible. McGrath is a decent teacher, but his exams are so difficult. I have never worked so hard on a class in my life and I am going to get a C. Read the book, do the online homework, and do practice problems. Luck is the only way to get an A in this class.

WORK HARD FOR A's ON ALL EXAMS! Exam 4 is ridiculous. You get to drop one exam grade and 98% of the time that is going to be exam 4 (average was about 33%). Final is basically a longer version of exam 4, so basically you're screwed. I was above average all semester (B average) and after the final I got dropped to a low C.

Mcgrath is a funny guy, and he "tries" to make the subject more understandable, but many times I felt like I'd go home and study and understand the concepts much better. He really surrounds the subject with a sense of impending doom: after the first test he told everyone who got an A that they need to step up their game because the test was easy.

Currently taking Summer 2 and it's honestly much easier being a condensed schedule. If he lectures the same way in Fall or Spring as he does for Summer, the class shouldn't be a problem. People are right about the exams though. You jump right into predicting products, mechanisms, and synthesis. No easy points.

Dr. McGrath is my hero. He starts off super harsh to scare off the lazy and screw ups but mellows out after a couple of weeks if you work hard or are super smart. He doesn't put up with smart asses or stupid questions. He is extremely good at explaining confusing or interesting topics.

CHEM241b Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: Barely cracked it open Rater Interest: Meh Grade Received: N/A

I went to class everyday and payed attention, but he teaches low and tests high. His tests are incredibly difficult involving a lot of recalling information and reactants from the first semester. He does not grade easily and the questions out of the book really don't help much. The old tests do though. I would suggest someone different if possible.

it boggle my mind why he is a teacher...he clearly hates all of his 'average' students. we don't all have 8 hours a day to study for your class. be prepared to teach yourself a lot of ochem.

His lectures are enjoyable,he's funny, and pretty good looking for an old guy. But he doesn't teach the material and expects you to have covered SO much before the exam. From problem sets on D2L, to ones in the book, and 4 previous exams...none of which help I wasn't a fan of his teaching. If you had Dr. K and liked him-stay away from Mcgrath!

His tests are ridiculous. No 'easy' point questions. Know the material like it is the back of your hand or you are screwed!!! Only 2 people scored over a B on the final. Preceptor was incompetent, and didn't know what he was talking about. Take Ghosh if you can!!

Great teacher, very difficult class, but passable if you study. I did not see arrogance as much as others did, but he is incredibly smart and it's very easy to learn new and interesting things from him. He was pretty funny too. "If my ass had a lone pair, I'd be a base" lol
