Dr. Mattson is an insightful professor with a unique background related to politics. While he delves deep into politics, exams are fair if you have and study the book. If you have previous political knowledge you have a heads up, but if you don't preapare to know the basics prior to exam. Dr. Mattson is accessible and helpful with questions.

Mattson is really not as bad as most people on here make him out to be. Class was hard at first (I failed the first test), but once you figure out that you MUST ATTENDED his class its not that bad. He was very quick with returning email's and his extra credit came straight from the book.

I had this professor at Iowa State University while in grad school (CRP). He is very intelligent and I learned a lot from him. Personality-wise, he reminded me of Woody Allen a bit... if you can see past what may be perceived as his being rude and focus on what this man has to teach/share, you'll be well off.

I liked the professor. He offers a lot of extra credit on the tests, final, and tells you what it is. The problem is a lot of students don?t know the material in the book, and the extra credit is useless, because if you don?t know the exam, you?re probably not going to bother to remember the extra credit.

TERRIBLE!!! I love politics and hated this class! His exams are impossible. I was never quite sure what he was talking about. He was so hard to follow! He is an arrogant man and a bad teacher!

Thinks he is teaching a PhD program and is very stuck on himself. He goes on irrelevant tangents and gives impossible exams. Even his take home exams are hard because he expects certain phrases that he might have discussed in class. Bottom line, you have to take him because his class is required; be ready to work hard for a B

I agree his class was challenging, but you have to understand he's a very intelligent man. Look at all that he's done. I googled him, and if you do the same you will know what I'm talking about. His age, and knowledge bring out his charasmatic personality, combined with his good looks and charm made it hard for me to focus on the material.

I think his problem was that he didn't realize he was teaching a 100 level class. 90% of us are there because we have to be not because we want to. Also I think he's too smart, he goes off on tangents and isn't clear with answers when you ask a question, or he just says "it's in the book". I got an A but I worked very hard for it.

Horrible teacher. Doesn't know what he is talking about. Being a political junkie, I would catch mistakes and wrong information every time I went to class (I missed one day so maybe be he got his facts right on that day). He is not afraid to be out right rude. Also Mr. Mattson, please learn to spell. You misspelling "Arkansas" is sad.

He is not the easiest person to talk to, but he cares about the subject matter. He wants students to care too and gets upset if students refuse to try. If you put a little effort into the class, he will give back to you the grade you deserve. If you don't do anything, you get a grade that reflects that. He is very fair.

Very sincere. Can go on editorial tangents. Not a professor or a class to be taken lightly. Must attend and pay attention in class to be successful.

Undoubtedly one of the worst professors I've had in either my undergraduate or graduate career. His skills in conveying information are severly lacking. He may know something about public budgeting, but you wouldn't know it from taking his class. thankfully he's only allowed to teach electives now, so he is avoidable.

Knows the topic but can't teach it. Tells you what to expect on an exam and then you study your ass off to find that hardly any of it was on the exam at all. He is a very nice person and intelligent but, like most professors, needs some certification in education. I learned a lot in the class but the grades say otherwise.

Worst professor ever. Never take him. Snow days will put you two weeks behind even if it's one snow day.

At the very least, Dr. Mattson is disorganized, extremely negative and rude. More thank likely, he has serious psychological problems, ranging from depression to delusions of grandeur. He doesn't care whether students learn anything; he just likes to hear himself talk. One of the worst college professors I have ever had!
