Overall an engaging and interesting professor. I enjoyed the course material but skimmed most of the assigned readings. Lectures were informative and he does them straight from his head. Your grade is based on only two essays, which are graded by a GSI you've never met. Take the class P/NP if you're not willing to put in the full effort.

Professor Johns was great. He really knows his stuff and is very engaging, not intimidating at all. He's also very kind and immensely helpful in his office hours! I would definitely recommend the class!

I had no idea what the US urban experience was about but Prof Johns was clearly one of the most articulate, witty, and knowledgeable professors I've had at Cal who made the topic super engaging! You need to know everything he lectures from (no slides/textbooks) and integrate that with the novels. Go to office hours: he tries to get to know you!

Wonderful, wonderful class if you're interested in the history of American cities. Textbooks were novels that described the cities at the time of interest. Professor Johns is witty, engaging, and knows his stuff. Never saw him using notes when lecturing; just straight from memory. He's very approachable and friendly.

He's very into what he's teaching and his lectures are engaging...but he's a very hard grader. There were only two essays for the entire semester (the midterm 60%, final 40%). There are several novels you have to read, but there is no text book. It's important to go to lecture to get all the notes because that's what you'll be writing about.
