Buy the ticket, take the ride. College isn't so much about the courses as the people you meet. Good professors that are also good people are few and far between. He is one of them.

The man is crazy intelligent and awesome to have a conversation with. He's really willing to help out if you need it and gives credit for effort that is put into his assignments. I can't say I learned much about Shakespeare, but it was an easy, enjoyable course.

Dr. Valk uses challenging vocabulary on purpose, probably because he believes that everything is capable of being described in words. And if you possess a large vocabulary, it is easier to express yourself. He will make you a better writer if you heed his comments and suggestions on your papers.

ENGL 105 Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: Barely cracked it open Rater Interest: Really into it Grade Received: N/A

Good teacher for 105. Class can be boring, as he just goes on endless tangents only to return to his initial thoughts. Doesn't really have deadlines, just turn things in (and get them back) whenever he feels like it. Gives solid feedback on papers. Pretty smart guy, definitely loves his PBR.

If you're taking ENGL 105 just for the credit, then this is your guy. He assigns no real work and has no expectations. However, if you actually want to learn something and not listen to the rants of an alcohol addict who won't take his job seriously, stay away from this guy. He tells terrible jokes for the whole class and often comes in inebriated.

This professor is awesome. He's very intelligent and hilarious, class was interesting to say the least. But most of all he's very kind and willing to work with students and help them out whenever he can.

In class, Valk often goes on endless tangents that have no apparent purpose, but every now and then he will offer some bit of wisdom that is incredibly insightful. Overall, the man is brilliant. Outside of class, he is eager to please and will go out of his way to help you. Attendance is not really required but absences will affect your grade.

Valk is hilarious, crazy, usually off-topic, and one of the most interesting professors you'll ever have. Sit up front to stay involved, you'll be glad you did, and be prepared for whispering then sudden yelling. He knows his stuff and genuinely wants you to succeed. Work is low compared to other 105's, and the class is relaxed. Goofy but great.

Valk was my Literature professor some 30 odd years ago! The one class I took from him was the one class that turned my college career around. I went from a borderline drop out to a Master's Degree in four years. His demeanor and attitude were what saved me and pushed me forward.

A brilliant man. Easy to think you can slack off because you can. But if you actually LISTEN to what he has to say (if he's not telling hilarious jokes) he's incredibly insightful and probably a genius. Take a class. He's flexible about deadlines, easy to approach, and cares about his students. Do the readings and you'll learn more than you expect.

Valk is awesome. He's hilarious and jokes around with students. If you are looking to learn about Shakespeare, don't take his class. His lectures get off topic and are hard to follow. He's good about meeting outside of class, and is great about providing opportunities to improve your grade.

Valk is an extremely funny teacher. A very entertaining class. Its worth noting that a Mr. Robert Knapp helps him teach the class, and he is very good as well. Very good class discussions. Attendence is not mandatory at all, and if you need more time on a paper Valk will give it to you no questions asked. I learned a good deal.

Great teacher. English 105 with Valk is probably the most fun you will ever have in a college class. Extremely easy to get get an A if your writing skills are decent. The final exam includes drawing cartoons and/or whatever else you feel like doing. I would highly recommend taking his class he is hilarious.

If you have a chance, take a class with him. He is an awesome professor, very funny, and teaches a pretty easy class. He accepts late papers with no real penalty. Very intelligent and fun.

Valk is one of the best professors I've had at KU. He is extremely well versed in the texts, insightful, entertaining, and personable. He does carefully grade the essays, so doing them at the last minute is a bad idea.

Valk is a great guy. He always makes class interesting. If you go to class and let him know you are listening to what he is saying, you will get a good grade. However, you also need to know how to write if you are taking his ENGL 105 class, especially considering your grade is based off of 4 essays and a final essay. Take his class!

I can't understand why anyone likes him- 95% of the time i have no clue what he is talking about.. he takes forever to return papers and his assignments ar ridiculously unclear. There are few assignments but he is a HARD grader so you don't have many opportunities to redeem yourself. Take as a last resort. ugh!

I highly encourage ANYONE to take one of Dr. Valk's classes- no matter what your major is. Valk makes every class worth coming to, but not because of class material. Valk is the epitome of a crazy college professor.

The word "genius" is not powerful enough to describe this professor's pure brilliance. He is quite possibly the greatest professor ever to live. Deadlines are flexible, humor is encouraged, class time is wasted, its great.
