I took Old English with Professor Bayless several years ago. Coming from a Latin background, the class was not difficult but I learned a lot. She was very accommodating of students of all levels, those with experience in ancient languages and those without. A very engaging professor who seeks to make learning the language fun. Highly recommended

She was very boring but the class was pretty easy if you showed up. She will call on you so be ready to answer questions in class.

Professor Bayless is great! She's not an easy teacher, but not impossible either. I had her for Old English I and II (I didn't take III because she didn't teach it). She's funny and knowledgeable and makes class interesting. If you like English, take her!

She's great! She has a dry sense of humor which is necessary when learning Old English. The subject itself is not my passion but it was better than taking a whole term of Chaucer for the major requirement!

She's a ton of fun! Very interested in what she teaches and clearly wants you to be as well. I'm looking forward to another class with her next term.

Very boring subject matter and very dry person. She really is dictative in her interpretations and opinions on the stories and definitely is a hard-nosed and selective grader. After taking a class from Bayless, it makes me never want to take another ENG class again!

Prof Bayless is great! She is hard to get to know on an individual basis, as she is standoffish, however, she has boundless passion for Medieval Studies! Her quizzes and tests require you to pay close attention through each class, but are never unreasonable. You can't help but love her geeky stories and factoids throughout class!

I can't say Professor Bayless is warm, but she is funny, brilliant, and has a fantastic memory. She is absolutely the best Chaucer professor, if you need to get your pre-1500 credits. Prepare for her quizzes by reading a "translation" side-to-side Chaucer. Underneath her standoffishness is shyness, and right beneath that is sparkling sharpness.

I don't agree with what the other reviews about M. Bayless are complaining about. I took a 400 level old english class from her and even though it was work, it was really FUN because she has a great sense of humor, she's smart and passionate about her subject in a hilariously geeky way. She's written quite a lot too.

She was almost always 5 min late. I think there was one day that she was on time. She talked in a monotone voice. She had quizes that contradicted what she had gone over in class.

I found her 100 level tests fairly easy (though I've heard that her upper division tests are more difficult). She has a sense of humor. My main problem is the lack of discussion when someone brings up a point she disagrees with; she just moves on and doesn't address it much, if at all. Overall, I'll take another of her classes.

I have heard great things about Prof. Bayless, but I have had a hard time finding them. I have found her quizzes to be ridiculously detailed and readings only vaguely connected to the topics. She does seem to have a great sense of humor and knows literature (if a bit focused on Arthur) but her (Medieval) history seems to be formed by stereotypes.
