Hist361
One of the nicest professors around and full of insight, Martinez is a great teacher. Show up to class and pay attention and keep up with at least half of the readings and it's a B. Really enjoyed listening to his experiences and cheesy jokes.
HIST361
Pretty easy, but he will put you to sleep. The lectures drag on and on, and he constantly attempts to guilt-trip you into feeling bad for illegal immigrants. Periodically he'll take a large chunk of time to tear into some Republican politician who has nothing to do with the course. Even people I talked to who agreed with him were bored to death.
HIST361
He really will put you to sleep its no joke. Doesn't really care if you show up, one of those classes where once you know what he's looking for you can just kind of wing it on an exam and do pretty well. I can't imagine doing all or even most of the readings but if you do this will probably be one of the easier A's you'll get.
HIST369
Every Professor has a bias, at least Martinez is upfront about it. Of course someone born in Mexico might sympathize with Mexico. Informative, well organized, and clear of his expectations of the class, I found him to be a very good professor. Readings and tests normal for a class at this level.
HIST369
Martinez does not teach to entertain, and as he says,"I am a Norteno." So of coarse, he will gives the raw form of history, not the romanticized version. You should look at the background of teachers to try and assimilate where these professors are coming from, not only does Martinez have vast experience, but has lived to experience it.
MAS361
Dr. Martinez is a good teacher. His teaching is insightful and grounded in FACTS. To me, he is a down the middle kind of guy, some think he is biased, I do not (I've seen biased teachers and believe me he's not). If you want to actually LEARN, take his class.
HIST361
This guy's motto is "Let's beat this horse to death." He goes on and on about the sorrows of Mexico while you learn absolutely nothing about it's history, or social system. I do NOT recommend taking this class.
HIST361
This man is so full of himself it makes me sick. He loves to hear the sound of his own voice and shoots down students who don't agree with him. Most of the class sleeps through his lectures but he couldn't care less. All but one book used in the class was either written or edited by him.
HIST361
He is the most boring teacher I have ever had. The information could be interesting but it seems like his goal every class is to see how many people he can put to sleep.
Hist361
To me he was a great teacher. He didn't do flashy power points but he had substance to his lectures. Everything he said was valuable to my course work which is MX-AM Studies and Anthro. So what if he didn't do flashy crap. He's a classic lecturer kind of teacher and as long as you pay attention and take notes you will pass this class like nothing.
Hist361
taking this class for an upper division elective... i should've listened to the reviews on here. this class could be interesting except he uses the over head projector to go through lectures. you will pass this class with flying colors if you can write two papers that sympathizes with the Mexicans and poor past.
Hist343
This professor takes his job way to seriously, gets very angry if you show up late even a min, do not have spanish last name that he can pronounce with a spanish accent. Barely puts an effort in making his class lectures interesting with short bullet notes from the board and bore you until you feel lost.
HIST361
BORING LECTURES!!! If he would just put some powerpoints together it would be so much more engaging. But instead, he stands at the front and talks nonstop for 1hr 15 mins! I love the subject and the readings were good. He was nice and I liked his views on things. Just boring lectures w/ NO VISUALS. Really hard tests.
HIST4000
Did not notice bias, but the man is absolutely boring in lecture. No interest in engaging students in conversaton...cannot accomodate questions from students. Readings are really great though...Exams few, but difficult. Make sure you do the readings.
HIST361
Haven't finished the semester yet. Seems average in terms of difficulty. However, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks he is biased, pompous, and worse, colors his lectures and the entire course with his bias. I was interested in the topic, still am, but he has made the class hard to take. I would not have taken this course had I known.
HIST369
The topic is interesting but class is typically boring. He has a unique perspective on issues but he lets his own political biases tarnish the class. It is very hard to listen to someone lecture about how America has ruined everything for the Mexicans. Lecture is pretty pointless to attend and tends to be boring.
HST 361
I totally disagree with the last rating. He is extraordinarily knowledgable about the borderlands and gave me an deep understanding of the issue I never imagined I would have. If you like to be challenged and learn about data and research that contradicts what the media spoonfeeds to people, then this is a great class :) Also easy A!
Hist 361
Extremely biased and a very lazy teacher. His lack of preparation for lecture/inability to accomodate students (including basic questions) he blames on Republicans. Interesting course, however it is extremely difficult to look past Dr. Martinez's blatant political and racial biases. Dont believe everything you hear in his class.
HIST 343
While he has a passion and has personal experience, I think he is biased, but doesn't show you that until the end. He starts out with a speech about how he's just telling the facts. At the end, after instructor evals are done, he unleashes a tirade about how European-Americans screwed Mexico and how it didn't have a chance because of us. Real nice.

He was ineffective, inflamatory, pompous, and I got away with an A without reading a single required assignment - that should not happen!

dr. martinez is a great instructor with an unusual passion for history. he is very articulate and old school in his approach, but through his schollarly approach at approcahing history the student is able to appreciate its immediacy and use that information to apply to current social issues. in my 4 years at the UA he ahs been my favorite.
