I took Cooney's Astronomy class & I 100% LOVED it! Class never felt like a lecture to me. I looked FORWARD to it. He instilled in me a real love for Ast. that I still have even now. This isn't an easy course, per se. But if you put in the study time, you will do well. Only 3 tests & periodical quizzes online. Do the quizzes! Book is essential. :)

I wouldn't take him again. He's always inserting his opinions into everything including about the nature of the universe and the Earth's environment. He's always complaining about people talking even if there's whispers in a 300+ person classroom. He just needs to relax and do better at making his lectures more productive.

Explains concepts very well; you don't need to be a science person to learn in his class. He has an almost childlike enthusiasm for astronomy (for science in general, really) and it'll rub off on you. The tests can be a little difficult, but if you go to class you can manage. Offers extra credit, don't need the book.

This class caused me a lot of stress at the beginning because of what I thought was harsh grading, but in the end, he curves and makes everything come out fair in the end. Don't worry so much. Just focus on doing your best, and enjoy Cooney's quirkiness. Awesome, well-informed guy. Do the homework and do well in the lab, and you'll be fine!

His exams (& online quizzes) were tough, but it's all multiple choice. I loved his passion and great sense of humor. You need an iClicker for his class for participation, but it's only 5% of your grade. You also need a passcode for Mastering Astronomy, he posts all of his grades there. You can use an old ed of the book though, mine was a free pdf.

I love Dr. Cooney! Hilarious guy, lectures kept my attention the whole time. His tests are mostly trick questions so you really have to know the concepts to do well. 4 tests, lowest score is dropped, extra credit is offered. Would definitely take his class again!

AST 2002 Taken for Credit: Yes Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: It's a must have Rater Interest: Low Grade Received: N/A

Prof. Cooney has knowledge of the subject but i felt the whole semester that he was trying to make us love astronomy, when its just a gen ed class. His class consisted of hard tests, online homework and clicker questions in class. The extra credit book was so long and not worth the 5 points he was offering. Maybe if it was percentage points.

As a college senior I thought it would be an easy class. This was the most difficult & time consuming of my summer classes. The tests are difficult & I found that reading the textbook & not listening to the Prof made it easier for me to understand the material. I spent 6+ hours studying for each test. Do extra credit if offered only way I got a B!

AST 2002 Taken for Credit: N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: You need it sometimes Rater Interest: Meh Grade Received: N/A

If you do not like astronomy take another class. This is not an easy class at all. I took this class in summer: 3 tests, online homework, clicker questions in class, extra credit book to read. If you take the class make sure to read the extra credit book as it can boost your grade. He teaches well and he knows his stuff, the tests are just hard.

This class is not an easy A, but if you work hard its possible! Cooney is very passionate about AST and very sweet/helpful. iclickers are used for attendance, textbook is helpful for homework. I mostly got B's and a C on his tests and did well on hw, ended up with an A since he curves your grade at the end. he makes astronomy interesting!

Professor Cooney is a really nice guy. I found his exams to be insanely hard. I have no interest in science, but I spent at least 6 hours studying for each exam in addition to attending almost every class. I barely passed every exam, but I came out with a B. If you are not interested in astronomy, I would suggest another course.

PHY 2048 Taken for Credit: N/A Attendance: N/A Textbook Use: Essential to passing Rater Interest: Low Grade Received: N/A

Having to rely on randomly assigned groupmates was the worst part of this class. I did much better on the tests when I went to Jim's review sessions. You have to read the book before coming to class or risk spending the entire class unnecessarily confused. The TAs were slow to grade and not very helpful but Cooney is great!

PHY2048C Taken for Credit: N/A Attendance: Not Mandatory Textbook Use: Essential to passing Rater Interest: Low Grade Received: B

The tests were very difficult, and he spent very little time lecturing in class. He expected you to know almost everything from reading the book, but the book was poorly written. Class average on the tests was a D and the average on the final was in the 50s. Don't do scale-up; you'll learn way more in a regular lecture.

For Physics 1 he's a great choice. Very funny and clear. He cares about teaching and his students. Makes a hard subject like physics manageable. The book really helped me learn. Tests were pretty tough but the grading scale of the class was pretty fair. I did scale-up which i think was a good type of class.

This was a great class and I really enjoyed it. It's a GEP class so people were obnoxious, but Cooney is hilarious and a great teacher. As long as you put in a decent amount of effort, you'll do well.
