Clear lectures; knowledgeable, dedicated. Difficult to obtuse readings. Theory is King, art as object, not so much. You will work hard, your brain will hurt, you will learn. Point of view is Neo-Marxist/New Left/Feminist/Postmodern. Lots of group work/group presentations. Well worth 15 weeks. Lady knows her stuff.

Jane Blocker is truly amazing. She is an extremely intelligent, articulate, dedicated, well-rounded, feminist idealist academic who can inspire and leave long lasting impressions on her students as well as the rest of academia and by extension -fine, by extrapolation- life.

I had Dr. Blocker for Art since 1945 and for Art Now. What she wants is very straightforward. There is A LOT of slide memorization, so it's important that you're interested in the subject matter. I had one problem in the class and when I went to her she was extremely considerate. I have no complaints, and I was sad to see the harsh reviews.
ARTH3401
I am a senior with a very high interest in the subject matter, yet Blocker still managed to make me hate this course. I just received the second only C in four years of college, and sadly I think it was one of the highest scores. She is disrespectful and rude to the point that I had to walk out of class for fear of yelling at her. DO NOT TAKE.
ARTH3401
Everyone told me not to take this class, but I did nonetheless because I'm interested in contemporary art. Should've listened... it is horrible. She is rude to students, elitist, and vague. Take it S/N or not at all. Her online text book is the only helpful element of her class.
Arth3401
Professor Blocker is arrogant and talks down to the students. The TA's are ridiculous and really tough graders. The class has very little to do with art. There are unrealistic expectations.
ARTH3401
She blames the students. Her midterm was vague and many complained yet, she claim it is because students didnt understand her. She never admit that she was unclear or that it was her fault. Too many papers and her TA's are extremely harsh graders who try to impress the her. TAs never tell how to improve, they just correct grammar. DO NOT TAKE!!!
ARTH3401
Little to no art or art history content at all. She and her TAs clearly have never taken many english courses and must have done poorly in them, yet they grade papers as if they were english teachers. Obviously, they do it incorrectly and they also grade based on your opinion. If you have a different opinion you are screwed.

The most prepared, together, knowledgeable, straightforward faculty member at the U. Although that is not saying much given the wrecks that teach in various disciplines, Professor Blocker is a true scholar/educator. If you want easy, take a wreck of a teacher who doesn't actually care.
arth1945
Very hard class. If you're in art history, and you're interested in modern art, you have to take it. Don't take too many other classes while you do though- you have to work very, very hard to get a good grade in this class even if you love the subject. She is one of the best professors at the U, IMO. Be in class and earn her respect.
ARTH3464
Blocker requires mandatory attendance just so there is always someone there to listen to her talk. She has unrealistic expectations for the students and requires class discussion in a class of 100 people. She is cold and unavailable outside of class. I worked my ass off in her class and barely scraped together a passing grade. Never again.
ARTH3401
Assigned seating in a class of over 100 students, as well as attendance in large lecture everyday. Though the class is short, it is usually quite boring because Jane likes to hear her own voice. The TA's are trying too hard to impress her, and your grades will suffer as a result. The material she covers could be very interesting, but her teachin

I also had her for 3401, the class everyone seemed to hate. But I learned so much in her classes and enjoyed them. She challenged me quite a bit, which , last I checked, was what college was all about. I appreciate her knowledge and willingness to give feedback. She is a great Art History Professor. I Highly recommend her!

I fought to get a B. You can't even fake the knowledge here. The papers ask for tons, the knowledge you forget because you cram and she's obviously part of the artistic elite and she accepts it. I found it so pretentious that I wanted to walk out, but don't or you WILL bomb tests. Art hist majors, take something else. Art majors, you'll love it.

I will second the elitist comment. She has the wonderful distinction of making me hate Art History enough to give up grad school. She tells students to write what they think about a reading and then grades on whether your opinion agrees with her elitist modernist views.

Ugh, Dr. Blocker is bad, simply bad. Her powerpoints are sketchy, gotta go to lecture and pay attention, crossword puzzles are not an option in her lecture cause she doesnt tell you what to study, you should just "know." Bad, dont take her. Just bad

I agree with the first poster, this class is basically how to write for the AP Newswire. Mass comm students would love this class. Myself, an art history major, found the techniques useless and the information could be taught in a may term class. I'm still angry I took this class.
