He made this subject really fun to learn about. I paid attention to him in lectures and got A's on all my tests. one of the best professors I've had at UH. wears the same three outfits the entire semester.

Very smart guy. Laid back and friendly. He helped me get into the class even though it was overfilled. Teaches well and loves the subject. It is a tough but enjoyable class

I hated his class. He is passionate about geology maybe too much. His test were so hard I could never make an A and I studied the notes and the book. Some stuff on the test wasn't even in the book. I am a straight A student and this was my first B-. I would not recommend him unless you are really interested in geology

Great professor. Really makes the subject interesting. e made my interest in Geology grow to a different level. Your grade is based off of three exams, and your labs(SO DONT MISS LAB). He does random pop quizzes for attendance, but they're really easy. Overall great professor....oh, and is soooooo Hot!!! :)

Class was easy if you attended, but the class was boring. He didn't care about the class, but he was very interested in Geology. You could tell he was passionate, but cared more for geology than his students. Only 3 tests and an optional make up exam, so you don't get much room to make errors. I wouldn't take him again personally.

Lectures are boring, tests are over powerpoints, don't bother buying the books or attending the class. Would not recommend this teacher or this subject. Better chance of getting an A in chem with Bott.

Great prof! Knows his stuff. Class was interesting if you like geology. Always willing to answer questions. Kept class funny and entertaining. Good professor over all. Grades based on 3 tests, optional final. Study power points for the tests well. Tests not bad at all if you study. Taking him for a dif geo class next year and looking forward to it.

Mineralogy. Relatively easy. Just do as he says and attend lectures. Ask questions, he likes that. DO ALL LABS. Tests come directly from slides. Read to understand the slides better. Get the book by Klein, not the one by Dyar, regardless of what he asks. You will learn a lot about crystal chemistry but only a very few minerals.

Makes the class seem easy...then you get the test which is actually really hard.

Good teacher. 4 tests, lab grades, easy term project, and 1 pg paper. Tests come from lectures. He likes people to ask questions and wants to make sure everyone understands the material. Labs help you understand the concepts covered in class. Willing to explain what you don't understand outside of class. I recommend taking him.

Maybe it's cause he changed test formats the year I took him, but I didn't find Lapen all that bad. I can see where people might have difficulty learning from him since he teaches from slides but if you do the labs and work with other students you'll do fine. He curved every test we had so that the top test score was 100%. Tests weren't hard.

I have him for mineralogy. So far so good, he seems to be a very good professor who genuinely cares for his students and that they are learning the material he is presenting. I have yet to take an exam but I am confident that I will do well. Overall he seems to be a great professor and I would recommend him. The material is slightly challenging

This guy takes pride in making his tests hard and in his students doing poorly on them. He does not give reviews and does not teach the material very well. He tries to punish the students who think its a blow off class but he is really punishng the students who come to class. The test avg is below a 60. plus he is boring

Speaking as a non-geology major, this class is not for you if you are looking for an easy natural science credit. He does not know how to teach intro. Information does not pertain to curriculum.

I liked his teaching overall. He was fairly new and still getting used to alot of things at the beginning, but really patient and thorough about answering questions. He was also pretty laid back, he preferred if you got your work in on time, but he wouldn't hang you if you were a few days late. Overall a great experience!
