I had RM in the 1970's at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Remember his pacing from one side of the lecture stage to the other. Great story teller; not-so-great communicator with students. He was the "hot prof" at UW, however.

You will learn more about learning, hard-work,film, art, animation, writing and more from this hard-working, hard-thinking writer, professor and mentor. You will be lucky if you open up to the highly fascinating, thought out and intellectually stimulating lectures and challenges put forth in RM classes. School should challenge you. RM is amazing!

I didn't enjoy this class at all. It's supposed to be for nonmajors, but the professor lectures to us as though we're experts in film. At the end of each movie, he reads off a lecture that he pre-wrote which makes it seem scripted, boring, and pretentious.

Professor Merrits class on animation is one that I highly recommend! You have to pay attention and take good notes. It's not an easy A, but its worth the effort.
FILM108
Overrated! Stay away from him. He's detached from reality & awkward. Class is scripted and he never lets students talk. Fixated on obscure topics which only interest him. Animation was not what I expected. Treated us like idiots and blamed us for bad midterm grades. Just wants you to vomit up what he says to do well.

One of the very best professors I have ever had: he knows it all, but when you talk to him he'll make every effort to make you believe that you do too.

took his animation class. he is such a nice professor and you can tell how passionate he is about the subject. has published a lot of stuff, too, which makes him legit. he gets excited when his students ask questions.

The most engaging, thought provoking and entertaining professor I had at Berkeley. A lot of people here criticized Film 50, which is a film class for non-majors, so it's intended to give an overview of the must-sees. His other classes on the other hand are really compelling, and he encourages independent research as well.

He's by far my favorite professor in the film department. I took his Film 50 class for non-majors and he made me want to be a film studies student.
Film108 an
imat.
His lectures are mostly scripted, very rarely asking for questions or feedback from the class. He was pretty boring, and it didnt help that he never looked up when he spoke. Lectures felt way too long

I WAS excited to take this class but after taking it, it killed any interest I had in film or pursuing anything in the field of film. The films shown are EXTREMELY boring and most people fall asleep in the showings. They tended to be obscure foreign films. Furthermore I had a very unhelpful GSI who had no idea to explain the concepts.

I was really excited about this class. He does seem to lecture more to the older audience. I enjoyed the diversity of movies he chose. Lectures weren't that helpful, probably because we would run out of time or he would focus on something obscure about it. I would have like to known more about film technique rather than historical context.

Do not take this class for a grade unless you really really want to put in a lot of needless effort. I've never felt so disconnected from a professor who lectures mostly to the adults who come to see the films. It says for nonmajors but it is ridiculous

(animation) - this class didn't really live up to my expectations & lectures tended to drag a bit but the professor was pretty nice and the class was easy.
Film 50
Do NOT take this class if you like films it will make you absolutely hate them. The Professor and GSI's offer not help and are always unclear. It is a waste of time class.

This class is DUMB. It's intro to film, but he chose to focus on techniques used, angles, shots, etc. rather than actual themes and motifs. Anyone not interested in actually producing a movie = bored out of mind. He is a pompous academic(aka ****ter.)He lectures to the old people. He name-drops like CRAZY; his tests are harshly graded.
