"Skip class? You won't pass." "Tests are tough" "Participation matters"

Extremely difficult. I understood minimum of what was said in lectures. Read the chapters yourself, or avoid the class. He gives clicker quizzes everyday so you need to go to class. The tests are on things that are far more in depth than what was discussed in class. He does curve a lot if the majority of the class does awful, which is standard.

There are no words to describe this class. Awful. I am an A student. Doesn't show in this class. He rambles in class and jumps around. His catch phrase is "you can read the PowerPoint slides as well as I can" so he simply bypasses them and doesn't go over them. Test are over things NEVER covered. And doesn't ask about things covered! STAY AWAY

"Gives good feedback" "There for you" "Would take again"

Dr. Koontz is a God. In fact he is better than God himself. Best professor at UTK by far. I had for 401 and 402. Absolutely love his lecture style. He is there for you not just in class but if you need help in life in general. Actually gives a crap about you he learns your name in a big class and honestly wants you to succeed.

BCMB 402 Taken for Credit:N/A Attendance: Mandatory Textbook Use: Essential to passing Rater Interest: Really into it Grade Received: B

If you are truly interested in biochemistry, this professor is perfect for you. If you just want a good grade, however, do not take him. If you take the time to understand the subject, this class is not as hard as it seems. He is willing to help anyone diligent enough to ask questions. He also has epigrammatic humor which I found to be hilarious.

Prof. Koontz's portion of this course was very straightforward. Read the text thoroughly and go to class and you should get a good grade. He can seem intimidating but he's not. Just put in a lot of work on your own outside of class (i.e. read/memorize the textbook). He definitely curved the grades for the two tests he wrote which was nice.

Koontz is utterly and completely worthless as a professor. Knows his stuff, knows not how to explain it. Rambles incessantly about things that you will later find out are not tested on. Make sure you know literally everything ever written about Biochemistry or you will not be prepared for exams. Good luck.

I have no doubt that Koontz knows what he is attempting to teach...he just doesn't teach it. He does in class concept clicker quizzes, and pre class quizzes that are in no way based on his "assigned" reading schedule or his notes. His in-depth essay q's on tests come from the deepest darkest regions of space! stay away at all costs!

Dr. Koontz is an excellent professor, and one of the best I have had at UT. He provides you with everything you need to succeed, but it's up to you to put in the effort and do well on the exams. 401 and 402 were my favorite classes at UT both of which I took with Koontz and learned a lot. If you put in the time there's no reason you can't do well.

Hey kids! Tired of teachers helping you, explaining concepts, and making learning fun? Look no further! Meet Koontz! All learning is from reading the book. Class is useless except for overly difficult clicker concept quizzes. Tests: mc with indepth essay questions. Two online quizzes/week. Will Koontz Smile© as he has his way with your GPA.

This is coming from an A student. STAY AWAY! Most of the time tests included aspects we haven’t even covered, and his teaching style was absolutely dreadful. If you are confused about something, then you might as well not even contact him because he is impossible to meet with. Do not look at these reviews and think you can handle it. It is awful!

The tests are unfair based on what we cover in lecture, & hard to finish during a class period-multiple choice plus 8 short answer questions (which are basically essays). If you can find a copy of his old exams, that will help to a certain extent. Makes you join a group for homework assignments because he said he's too lazy to grade one per student

This guy seriously is AWEFUL!!!! Worst teacher I've had in my entire life. No help at all, terrible lecturer, worthless assignments, absolutely furious I took him. Even if it means not graduating on time, don't take him. Trust me or your life will be hell for 4 months.

I really enjoyed his class til I had to take a makeup cuz I was sick. he not only told me to take it the day after, when i showed up sick, he said "already feeling better in a day?" in an obviously sarcastic tone. He's an okay lecturer, but the fact that he was rude to me for no reason made me extremely uncomfortable to ever go to him for help.

Horrible instructor. Does not contribute to you learning the curriculum and often just tries to show off how much more intelligent he is than you. Takes slight amounts of actual class material and tries to turn it into a biochem class. Stay away if possible.

Second Semester Biochemistry. Mandatory attendance because of quizzes - with pre-class quizzes on top of that - is a real pain. But the class was pretty easy. Just read the text very thoroughly and you'll ace the exams.

Dr. Koontz is BCMB professor so he makes a lot of the course a lot more difficult than it needs to be. Hes not very helpful, often answers a question with another question, and doesnt respond to emails at all. His exams are difficult if you dont study regularly. The amount of time to put in to this class is definitely not that of a 100 level course

RUN AWAY! I took his class because his was the only one that fit my schedule, even though 3 or 4 people warned me not to. He directly contradicts himself in class, tells students that the book and masteringbio are both wrong, and absolutely refuses to help anyone with a full time job. I would have rather graduated as a 6th year than take him.

Koontz is a teacher you should take if you want to be challenged and actually learn the material. Make sure you read the textbook and pay attention to the slides he includes in class which are not from the text book. The section I was in could opt to take the class online, which was awesome. READ the questions on the test.
