"Participation matters" "Tough Grader"

Dr. Larsen is passionate about history and knows all about it. However, I am uncertain if he realizes some people aren't as interested as he is. He is also a tough grader. Workload isn't too bad but in order to get a good grade you must take good notes. Grades on participation, but to get an A in that category you must input multiple times a day

HIST 1002 Taken for Credit:Yes Attendance: Not Mandatory Textbook Use: It's a must have Rater Interest: Really into it Grade Received: B-
"Tough Grader" "Papers? More like novels" "Skip class? You won't pass."

Dr. Larsen really loves history and his interest really invokes the interest of his students. Really passionate about what he teaches which makes it easy to come to class when attendance is not recorded. Get ready to write. There are 4 3-4 page papers and one 6-8 page paper along with a debate and short paper on the French Revolution. Not too bad.

"Tough Grader" "Papers? More like novels" "Lectures are long"

Mr. Larsen is extremely passionate about history, which helps you stay fairly engaged in his class. Lectures are long and grades are 100% based on take home essay exams. Textbooks for this class are completely useless, everything you need to pass the exams is uploaded to D2L. Isn't an easy A class but if you put the effort in, it's possible.

"Lectures are long" "Papers? More like novels" "Get ready to read"

Larsen loves history. But the lectures are unbearably long and I ended up spending most of the lecture on facebook or texting. He assigns two 3-4 page midterm papers, a 6-8 page term paper, and TWO 3-4 page papers for the final exam, which you have about 6 days to do both. We've never had a test, and for someone who isn't strong in english it sucks

Really funny and extremely knowledgable guy! Tests are take home papers which is great, but it also means you need to attend class in order to get the information to write your take home essay. Overall, one of the best history teachers to have. I learned a lot.

"Skip class? You won't pass." "Inspirational" "Amazing lectures"

Dr. Larsen is one of my favorite professors at Marquette. I took him for HIST 1001 an HIST 1002 and I am proud to say that this semester I declared history as my second minor thanks to him. He makes history interesting. Go to class. All the exams are papers and you can basically get by with all of the information you get from lecture.

Dr Larsen is very into what he does and teaches. Attendance is mandatory but he's a good teacher and if you do the essays and look at the handouts you have to print out, you'll do fine. Just put in the effort and you should get a decent grade!

"Gives good feedback" "Amazing lectures" "Skip class? You won't pass."

The lectures are very interesting and if you attend them the 4 essays you have to write will be really easy to write. The way he teaches makes you engaged. You learn some interesting facts and he stresses the importance of learning to read documents as well as having great writing skills. Take this class, he's a good professor.

Dr. Larsen genuinely cares about teaching his students. With no effort anyone can get at least a B. His exams are take home essays, just take notes and you should do fine. The way to get an A is by making a BS argument about the information you got from lecture on the essays. Also, there is a term paper done in stages.

Dr. Larsons lecture was pretty much the same every single day, just him sitting in front talking. All of the grading is done by the TA's so it could vary depending on who you get. the class is pretty dull and attendance is mandatory but if you put the time in it is an easy A.

Dr. Larsen was extremely helpful when you visit to his office hours. He is a strict grader on take home tests but his class is easy to follow and SUPER interesting. This course is nothing like high school history course, he makes it actually interesting. Good professor, good class, recommend.

I lovee Dr. Larsen, such a good guy. Makes 1001 so interesting. Both classes have 3 papers (3-4 pages) and a term paper. Easy to understand the material.

I usually hate history, but I looked forward to going to this class. All of the tests are take home essays and are simple to write if you take good notes/pay attention in class. Just make sure to read the handouts prior to class because class is focused around the discussion of them. Make sure to participate a lot! Overall interesting class!

He is a strange guy. He is very enthusiastic and interested in history and what he is talking about. Attendance is mandatory and taken every class. A lot of reading. No tests/quizzes. You have 4 papers and participation that make up your grade. He is a fun guy but the whole class is him just talking. I would recommend him.

Larsen is a good guy with high expectations. He knows his stuff and communicates it well. He will absolutely drop your grade for every class you miss, I know from experience. Still, I learned a ton from him and he absolutely loves what he's teaching. That makes it easier to learn from him for sure.

The class is pretty fun. All the exams are essays, which is pretty nice. Larsen makes lectures interesting, and a third of the grade is participation. You play a French Revolution game that is pretty cool for like a fourth of the class.

However, this class is very writing intensive and your grade depends on good writing skills. He is also a stickler on attendance. In the syllabus it says you get grade penalties for missing three classes and you may think it wont be big but it will! A whole letter and a half will be dropped if you miss more than three.

By far my favorite first semester class. He is an extremely smart person, and knows EVERYTHING about history. He was able to answer almost every question with clarity and good background info. I never missed a lecture, because I never wanted to. Loved going to this class and would take again if I could. Don't take if you aren't a strong writer
