He seemed like he was going to be kind of a tough grader but definitely wasn't. You're allowed 5 absences but he cancelled class like 5 times so there's that. There are no exams or quizzes or awkward discussions. You have about two short papers and weekly journals.

He seemed like he was going to be kind of tough but cancelled class all the time and we didn't even get to two of the books we were supposed to read. No quizzes or exams just two papers and weekly journals. Easy enough.

Classes were always interesting, especially when he talked about his own crazy personal experiences. Books were good except for the last one which was hard to understand. MAKE SURE TO READ FOR CLASS!!! You can't bs having read and not having read and its a big deal in his class. Grading wise hes great, and as long as you try you'll get at least a B

He's a pretty easy grader. He went over "how to make an argument" for an entire class, so if you're an English major he'll probably think your essays are awesome. He wastes a lot of time going on about certain scenes in the novels that aren't that important. Did NOT get to all of the books on the syllabus. BUT as a person, he's really really cool.

Mr. Freeburg is one of the funniest, most personable teachers i've ever had. he is such a joy to be around. i truly think he is one of the most AMAZING teachers at U of I. he is so passionate about african american literature, and he is so REAL with his students. You would be LUCKY to have this professor. He's awesome.

Professor was tough. I learned a lot. Take him if you want your money's worth from an English degree.

So friendly, clear, helpful, & approachable. He's easy to please. As long as he sees you're trying & you use his criticisms on future work, he grades well. The reading is hard but you're reading the authors themselves instead of books about the authors like other LIT classes do. I gained a lot of perspective in his class & honed my writing skills.

I disliked this man so much that I have gone out of my way to disparage him here, despite having dropped his summer class. He is so bad that it takes some creativity to reason out how he got a position at the U of I. He's that bad. His incoherent lecturing style makes it so so so so so obvious that he has no idea what he's talking about. So bad!!!!

Freeburg is the best professor I had while attending UI. His paper prompts left you with plenty of room to write on a variety of topics. He is incrediably intelligent, and if you go to his office hours, he is more than willing to help you. He has a unique styling of teaching and he's very laid back. Get to know him and he'll help you succeed.

Freeburg is horrible. Very nice should not be teaching anything larger than a class of 10 people. His paper prompts were literally 4 sentences tops. Never explained the nature of midterms and finals until too late. Ignorant of the needs of his students. Papers were graded quite hard. Lacking professional manner...should not be teaching at U of I!!!

Instructor puts very little care or effort into lecture and is very dismissive of student concerns. Paper prompts were unclear and it was confusing what material was going to be on tests. Not recommended, unless you want a frustrating semester.

Words can't express my distaste for this professor - he told the class was a poor student in school; it has resulted in his being a very poor instructor. He gives lectures of irrelevant information that won't be included on the tests, for which you receive no help or advice on how to prepare. TERRIBLE, cocky, unintelligent instructor. Never again.
