Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome To the RMP FAQ. Click on a question and view the answer below it.
- What are your rater guidelines? What is acceptable?
- Answer:
Please click on the link to view our Site Guidelines.
- I added a new professor but cannot see his/her ratings yet. Why is the professor name listed in gray? How long will it take before the new professor is approved by the site?
- Answer:
Before your newly added professor is displayed on our list, your entry will need to be verified and approved by the RMP Site Moderation team in the order the submission is received. Grayed out professors have not yet been approved by the RMP Moderation team. NOTE: Do not resubmit a professor's name - a duplicate submission may cause further delay in approval. If your professor submission is not yet approved, keep checking back!
- Will a professor know that I have rated him or her?
- Answer:
No. Neither your name nor your email address will be displayed anywhere on the site. In fact, although you have the option to create an account, an account is not required to post a rating and comment. Regardless, all ratings must adhere to Site Guidelines.
- Don't students use this site just to get even with their professors? Aren't most of the ratings negative?
- Answer:
No. Actually, well over half of the ratings on this site are positive. In fact, each year, we compile a list of the top professors based on ratings and comments from students. Find out who the highest rated professors are here.
- Why was my comment deleted?
- Answer:
Comments that are inconsistent with Site Guidelines are removed by the RMP Site Moderation team.
- Can I flag a comment or professor rebuttal that I believe should be removed from your site?
- Answer:
Yes, you can. Simply click on the flag icon next to the comment or professor rebuttal in question and the RMP Site Moderation team will review. Comments and rebuttals that are inconsistent with Site Guidelines will be removed.
- How do the scores work? I don't think Easiness is a relevant category. Why is it part of the rating?
- Answer:
All categories are based on a 5 point rating system, with 5 being the best. See Ratings Categories for additional information.
- I gave a professor a Hot vote but no chili pepper showed up. Why not?
- Answer:
The chili pepper is based on the sum of the "hot" and "not hot" ratings: "hot" is a plus one and "not hot" is negative one. A chili pepper only appears if the total is positive. If it's zero or negative, no chili pepper is displayed.
- Do you ever share my personal information to third parties?
- Answer:
For a detailed list of circumstances where we may disclose your personal information, please refer to the RateMyProfessors.com Privacy Policy.
