TOUGH GRADER INSPIRATIONAL PARTICIPATION MATTERS

I just heard about the controversy about Rachel and was inspired to comment about the class I took with her. It was at CMU in 2000 (not DePaul.) The 5 students in my class still REGULARLY reminisce about her. She was far and away the best professor any of us have ever encountered and had a material impact on all of our (fairly successful now) lives

RESPECTED AMAZING LECTURES GIVES GOOD FEEDBACK

Incredible woman. Although she doesn not follow the same strategic as other professors, she gives lectures like no other. She allows her students to think and to discusss and not be so caught up on unimportant things. Would definitely recommend. Can be scary at first, but grow some balls and learn what it's what it like to have a real professor.

Professor was disorganized and not so attentive to my questions and concerns. She seemed very full of herself and condescended to students at times. I felt like she was more interesting in impressing the class than really teaching. Also, she dressed provocatively and inappropriately at times which was distracting.

Provocative, provoking provocateur. Everything an excellent professor should be. Anyone else who thinks less of her is whining because they couldn't hack it in her class or the industry. I hate saying it but it's true.

Took several required classes with her- Extremely flawed, pretentious, makes innapropraite comments about students to other professors and student in public&private. Inconsiderate and thoughtless, unprepared. Will disregard a student's comment if she is ignorant on the topic. Chooses favorites. Downright rude and hurtful.

Somewhat terrifying at first, but you'll start to realize how great she is as the quarter goes on. DO THE READINGS. She calls on you whether your hand is raised or not expecting a somewhat intelligent answer. Your life will be insanely easier (and happier) if you just do the freaking readings and apply yourself.

Rachel's classes are not for the faint of heart, if you have her class go prepared to work. She is brilliant and is especially good at getting the students to start forming their own thoughts and theories about theatre. My advice: DO THE READINGS and SPEAK YOUR MIND and you will do just fine.

Two words: withered ambition. I rarely got the idea this professor wanted to teach. She's barely tolerable in the classroom (unprepared, "discussion" based lectures) but an all out disaster as an adviser. Do NOT get stuck dramaturging a show under her. It'll be a tedious waste of your time.

Useless and self righteous. She has forgotten the overall meaning of TEACHING. That is unless your willing to kiss her ass and tell her how amazing she is... which she isn't. She's not even helpful as a person.

The most unpleasant professor I have ever had, and among the worst people I've ever met. Her overall pretension and vile personality made the course virtually unpalatable.

Took dramatic crit with her and worked on dramaturgy papers. I liked her a lot more in a class setting. I met her in her 1st year & maybe she had something to prove, cause she wasn't all that nice or supportive. She does have favorites & she does push you hard, but I think, once you prove yourself a bit, she can help you grow as a writer & thinker.

Rachel is one of the best professors in the theatre school. Demanding, exciting, brilliant, provocative, and passionate. You will learn so much, improve your writing, and leave every class with your head spinning. This isn't a teacher for you if you're lazy, unimaginative, conventional, or dumb.

You can glean kernels of invaluable information from her classes- by that, I mean stuff that can come in handy in professinoal theatre. These are the steps to get thoset: 1- prove that you work hard. 2- prove that you have the capacity for exceptional comprehension. 3- don't let her smell your fear.

the smartest teacher you'll ever have at depaul. Actually the most famous if you forget that costume lady. Shtier is what you assume, rather hope a college professor would be. Brilliant, beautiful, nurturing, driving, better than you. Can't doubt her. She's smarter than you or your father.

this is a REALLY hard class. the final was based on a 600 page book of which we were expected to read every page. It was a pretty fun, discussion-based class though. Fun class to go to high.

God help you if you take her. Lots of reading AND 4 page SINGLE SPACED papers each week... thats every week. Her extremely flawed personality is the kicker. What the other person said about her having favorites and such is true. I even got a B.

While I can't say I did well in Shteir's courses, I did learn a lot about how to write and analyze works of theatre. If you don't want to work hard and do a lot of reading, do not take her sophomore sem. course. It's definitely not "easy."

Avoid! Very knowledgable about theatre, but incredibly pretentious. Chooses favorites in the class, shuns others. Does not know how to differentiate "theatre" classes from "English" classes. Vindictive. (And I did WELL in her class!)
